As Good as Gold: A dog's life in poems Kindle Edition
"There is something truly magical about this wonderful collection. Having read each poem, I love how every word celebrates our canine companions from the tip of their wet noses to the wag of their tails." (Susan Day, Editor and Author)
"A super sweet and poignant book of poetry about what a pup thinks of his world. As a cat lover I especially was tickled by his relationship to the cat. Any dog lover would adore this book. The photos were appealing. Haikus at the end were tiny diamonds.” (Kathryn Meyer Griffith, long time author)
Celebrating the simple things in life as seen through the eyes of our old time favorite furry friends, “As Good as Gold” is a volume of poetry revealing the talent and humor we always knew our dogs possessed.
Dogs are full of questions, yet they are famed sellers of innocence especially when it comes to explaining their mishaps and often foolish effervescence through such pondering as “Why IS a Cat Not Like a Dog”, “As Brown as Chocolate”, “Silver Stars and Puppy Tail” or, best yet, “Dog or Book?”
A book with an enormous heart for readers of all ages, it includes 35 poems and haiku accompanied by expressive portraits of our canine friends. The poems are grouped in: Questions, Colors, Musings and Haiku.
* Ideal to boost you up by reading one poem at a time,
* Great conversational piece to have around on a rainy day,
* Fantastic tool to discuss colors in nature and everyday questions with your little ones,
* A gentle way to introduce children to animals' feelings,
* Amazing picture to cheer you up.
* An ideal gift for any dog lovers!

"Still, what exactly goes through a dog's mind? What kind of questions do they ask themselves? How do dogs understandlife? When they look at a snail, for example, besides its scent, whatelse do they take in? And how does a dog feel when... a cat is suddenlyintroduced to the family?
"These questions stood behind the poems and haiku from As Good as Gold - as engaging as a tail wag."

The writing style is conversational and relaxed. The following few extracts give a feel for the style of the poetry:
"Puppy tiptoes,
Takes a peek.
Sniffs carefully ...
What IS that squeak?"
"It's oval, it bounces, it floats away,
It's pink like his tongue, it wants to play!
"I'm coming!" barks pup and off he goes.
Down the hill the pink shape flows
And puppy follows suit. It's just within his reach,"
For cat lovers, there are also a few poems told from the perspective of our feline friends and I loved those especially, as I am a cat owner.
I think this book is a lovely way of teaching children about animals as pets and the writing is appropriate for both children and adults, all of whom will adore the antics and curiosity displayed by the dogs, especially the puppies.
I have two great loves in my life, outside of my family, and that is books and dogs! Furstenburg captures exactly what makes dogs so very special. She gives us a peek into their lives and their connection to nature. I don’t usually read too much poetry, but I just adored this collection. The poetry I have read in the past hasn’t brought characters to life for me, but this one did. Each dog, cat, and animal was a character to me that I could see clearly in my mind as was each setting, whether in a home or out in nature.
Not only was this a book about dogs, it was a book about friendship and the importance of loving things different from yourself as was perfectly illustrated in the relationships between cats and dogs. People could certainly use a lesson in this! She also reiterated the loving relationship between dogs and people which certainly reminded me why I love my sweet Lab girls, Honey and Lily and why “in their hearts, they are as good as gold.”
If you are looking for a book to bring a smile to your face and warm your heart, you can’t go wrong with this little magical book of poetry! If you aren’t a dog lover or animal lover, Patricia Furstenberg just might make you one with this book of poetry!
That is one of the fascinating things I found while reading this. The words were simple enough but put together in a way that you can imagine what is going on in them. One of my favorite poems was “Why, Cat?” I truly enjoyed this poem because we found kittens on our back porch in June and kept two of them. So my dogs’ world were brought upside down with the addition of these two, crazy critters. Furstenberg writes this poem in such a way that I can totally imagine this being my dogs’ reaction!
It starts off by talking about how the dog was the master of the house and everything was routine. Then all of the sudden a cat was entered!
“Routine was good, my life was planned,
Then cat showed up, my life got changed.
But since Mom brought her, I guess she’s in.
No chitchat.”
It then goes on to talk about the changes that were made since the cat entered the dog’s life. This is so accurate! At least in my case. My dogs were so not sure about these cats, but now they all love each other. They snuggle and play! She ends her poem in such a way (haha that rhymed).
“We share the bed; she’s soft and loves to cuddle.
We share the breakfast; I get the crust, she gets the bits of bacon.
We guard the home; day shifts are mine, she mostly guards at night time.
And turns out the her purring is not so bad, once you get used to…
So, welcome Cat.”
Most of the poems are found in this sort of nature. Is it correct? Are the stanzas set up properly? I don't know - I am not a poet critic so I cannot answer that fully. All I can tell you is that I enjoyed each poem and it reminded me of my dogs. I just wanted to go home and love them. I think that’s what poetry is supposed to be about. It’s supposed to be emotional, and affect everyone differently. I would say these poems were successful in describing the nature of man’s best friend and giving off a happy feel. If you are looking for something fun and light to read and are a lover of animals - I would suggest this poetry collection.

The poems describe puppies in a variety of amusing situations as they investigate their surroundings in an effort to discover what life is all about, often getting themselves into trouble as their boundless and playful curiosity takes over. Each encounter is described through the thoughts of the puppy as he questions and muses on the variety of unfamiliar things he comes across during his daily investigations.
The colourful and descriptive style of the author and the antics of the puppies will draw young readers in, prompting thoughts and questions of their own as they read. The poems are ideal for opening young minds to the many different aspects of the world around them, from animals, and plants, water and colours, to the natural daily and seasonal changes and even more dangerous wonders like fire.
All in all, a lovely poetry book that would be perfect for adults and younger children to share.
