A Second Rainbow Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 12 ratings

A book about laughter after tears, and unexpected friendships

Dorothy, suddenly single after a long marriage, her confidence severely dented, had no intention of ever dating again. Her daughter had different ideas, and signed her up on the Yellow Brick Road, a website for mature singles, propelling her into an online world of dodgy men and aggressive women, where virtual became reality remarkably quickly. There’s love, tears, self-doubt, sex, and bitchery, in the world of the second-time-rounders, where inhibitions are the one bit of baggage they do relinquish, as Dorothy turns from subdued caterpillar into confident butterfly.

Funny, quite sexy, slightly shocking, the second-timer must-read, there’s a thread through the first half of the book linking it to
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, L. Frank Baum's 1900 classic first book, but the only fantasy is in the online profiles. . .

"An intelligent, well-written, adult book for women (and men)" -

"This book is a tour-de-force of basing a thoroughly contemporary story on a cultural artifact that is so deservedly beloved. What the author has done is to absorb completely what makes the story of Dorothy so universal . With that understanding, she shows how someone suddenly thrust into a bewilderingly new world not only survives numerous adventures and outright dangers, but thrives by doing so. There is considerable delight in tracing the connections between the original characters and how the author has re-imagined them in this new social network context of modern mature singles romances." -

"(unlike) some erotic novels I’ve read there were no long scenes of an explicitly intimate nature where everything is described - a rather refreshing read where sex is described in quite robustly blunt terms that I really liked." -

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I've written several books under another name, and one astonishing thing is the number of people who assume you are writing about yourself.
Add to that I
have been on a singles website for several years, it does have a lively blogging facility, and I have met several people off the site, both socially and romantically, home and abroad.
If people thought my whodunits were about me (and I promise, cross my heart, I've never murdered anybody ever) what, then, would they think after reading this book? So I published it under a tongue-in-cheek pen name. Just as well, as a surprising number of people do think it is autobiographical.
Obviously, you write what you know. But you also write what you hear, and I'm a great listener, say ooh and ah in all the right places. You also, as a writer, add in a bit of wishful thinking and dollops of imagination and only then end up with something like Rainbow.
For those who are looking for a non-fiction guide to being a mature single on some of the dodgy websites out there, look out for '
On Finding Mr Will-Do-Nicely' under the same Clarissa name. It's a hoot, but it's the real deal.

This book is a tour-de-force of basing a thoroughly contemporary story on a cultural artifact that is so deservedly beloved. What the author has done is to absorb completely what makes the story of Dorothy so universal . With that understanding, she shows how someone suddenly thrust into a bewilderingly new world not only survives numerous adventures and outright dangers, but thrives by doing so. There is considerable delight in tracing the connections between the original characters and how the author has re-imagined them in this new social network context of modern mature singles romances.

These are fun and tremendously wittily done, but they really are just the beginning of what's so good about A Second Rainbow. The plots as they unwind have just the right balance between keenly-observed plausibility and Whoa-where-did-that-come-from? fancy. That alone is very hard to do and it's done exceptionally well here. The final third of the book is an absolute model of how to construct contemporary dialogue while carrying a subtle plot briskly forward.

The really deep enjoyment here comes from what I think is so deeply memorable about the original Oz story. It's knowing that any of us may shockingly find ourselves in a situation where we feel like children in a world filled with, well, creatures that we have never before known to exist, some of which may turn out to be our friends and some definitely not so. A Second Rainbow is a story of how we may need to grow up, and how we can grow up, at any age.

I read this book in under 2 hours. It is fun, easy to read, very au courant with current social dating procedures in some circumstances. It is a good beach book.
But to compare it to 50 Shades of Gray...please! There were perhaps four slightly explicit and short erotic scenes. I would call it an educated Harlequin Romance.

I purchased this book believing it was about the real dating experiences of an older woman re-entering the dating market. However, the author admits the story is completely fiction. It's doubtful that Dorothy's foray in the mature dating arena is a common one, but it is definitely entertaining, if you don't mind a lot of graphic, intimate encounters. 50 shades of grey toned down, but uninhibited nonetheless, the author wove the Wizard of Oz story line well into Dorothy's experiences, and made her "way back home" ablaze with interesting related characters...the tin man, the lion, etc. The ending was satisfying if not realistic.

If you like sexy adventure, you may enjoy this book. But it is not a book about dating for older singles; instead it portrays an imaginative take on the Wizard of Oz for a much older Dorothy...written well throughout.

Clarissa Rodgers-Briskleigh tells a fun tale of a mature woman looking for romance. Her experiences with an online dating site could describe those of many contemporary women, young and older, who experiment with internet dating. A great read for anyone who is curious about the allure of these sites.

Riding with Dorothy's vivid, daring and sometimes horrifying but mostly sexy adventures was a fun experience.

A Second Rainbow was a terrifically fun read. I really like this authors writing style having read some of her other work and from following her blog where she has been tirelessly researching the dating scene for those of more mature years. This is a writer who has walked the walk and that comes across in this well written book.

We follow Dorothy on her second time around journey in discovering love, lust and everything in between after her marriage fails. This tale is structured around the story of The Wizard of Oz (hence the Dorothy bit, is anyone called that nowadays?) anyway this worked very well as we met and experienced the various men that Dorothy dates.

This book is in the erotica section and I’m not sure where the line is drawn or at what point you have to make it clear to readers that there could be scenes they may find potentially alarming. I found that unlike some erotic novels I’ve read there were no long scenes of an explicitly intimate nature where everything is described but more that this is a rather refreshing read where sex is mentioned, briefly described in quite robustly blunt terms that I really liked.

I happily sailed through this book and was so fully absorbed in the storyline that just like Dorothy I didn’t see the twist coming, not at all, I should have done of course, well because… no I won’t spoil it but it was very well done.

I loved the relationships Dorothy manages to keep, forms and maintains and though her story is very different to mine I have a feeling that should we ever meet we would get on famously. A highly recommended read with great insight into finding that second rainbow many seek.

A surprisingly good little romp. I was dubious about the Wizard of Oz theme but it works quite well, and it's a nice story with good characters. The sex isn't terribly graphic or shocking. It's a quick, easy, enjoyable read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Continuing to challenge perceptions!

I should start by noting that this isn't the kind of book I'd normally buy but the articles on the author's website (describing this novella as one where the author looks at how men and women frequently misunderstand what one and other actually want) was intriguing enough to have a  look.

It's certainly a departure from her "Grasshopper Lawns" novels but what it keeps in common with that series is that it continues the author's desire to challenge what society deems 'proper' behaviour for someone who reaches a certain age.

Second Rainbow isn't a "50 Shades" for the more mature set but it does challenge the notion that sexuality is something only for those in their twenties.

It's hard not to find yourself rooting for Dorothy as she strives to find love after her dull but safe marriage dissolves around her and the story moves briskly (no pun intended) through Dorothy's search for something better.

An intelligent, well-written, adult book for women (and men).

Hopefully this book will herald the beginning of the end of substandard writing in books of this genre.

Newly-single Dorothy finds her humdrum life suddenly upturned when she joins the sometimes chaotic, but never boring, world of internet dating.

We join Dorothy on her journey with the same fascination as we did the original Dorothy, in her quest to find the Wizard on that twisty-turny Yellow Brick Road of life.

I look forward to the next (even juicier!) book from this author!
