3rd Degree Murder Kindle Edition
A university intrigue.
A prestigious Vice-Chancellor receives two formal complaints just before he is due to retire.
The underlying theme throughout weaves a potent, cultural mix between Maliha, a Muslim student, and Jenny, a Jewish secretary. How will they get on, especially working for the same hated professor, Axel Sloan?
Whilst studying for her PhD, Maliha suffers a horrifying rape at university. How will she be able to cope? At the same time, Jenny suffers constant anti-semitic remarks.
Also embroiled in the intrigue are a family at war with modern society, two disgruntled lecturers, a Vice-Chancellor with a secret and a crazy office cleaner. So, in the end, who actually killed Professor Axel Sloan?
3rd Degree Murder – a tale of revenge and blackmail; indeed a dish best served cold.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2019This is a carefully, well written novel about life at a provincial English university, where everything, or at least some things, are not as they appear. From the office of the vice chancellor, to the head of a department, to his secretary, to a research student, to an elderly office cleaner, intrigue abounds to bind these all together in a chain reaction.
That there is a cunning murder in this tale goes without saying; the title alone gives that away. Ah, but that's not all. Not by a very long chalk.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2015I enjoyed this novel very much. It has it all: academic intrigue, thwarted ambitions, racial, class and sexual discrimination, set against the backdrop of a 1970s-80s university at a time when the UK was undergoing fundamental changes. The characters are well drawn and their individual motivations are depicted with humour as well as sensitivity. The ending was a bit rushed, but satisfying nonetheless, and some of the descriptions of UK tertiary education policy might have been reduced a little, but these points didn’t detract from an entertaining read. I can highly recommend it and look forward to reading more from Olga Swan.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2015I thoroughly enjoyed this twisty, slice-of-life mystery set in British academia. Fans of Alexander McCall Smith's Ladies Detective Agency series will love this book in particular. Hope this is the first in a series from this author!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2015The 3rd Degree Murder by Olga Swan is a look at university life in Britain in the 80's, with a who-dunnit twist. The heroines are well drawn, the evil professor deserves his end, and I won't spoil the plot twists and surprise ending. I found this a quick, pleasant read, highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good mystery.
An excellent read with an interesting insight into the world of academia. Enjoyed reminiscing on admin and secretarial references of a bygone time. I read this book whilst on holiday and found it quite thought provoking as to 'who did it'. Nice twists and good descriptive characterisation.
Would thoroughly recommend reading this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vengeance can be great reading!
Behind the scenes at the university in 3rd Degree Murder, the goings on make me glad to have been on the student side. There were lots of references to the admin processes which were poignantly reminiscent to me, however, what makes the book a good read is how the ramifications of good and bad decision making in the upper echelons affects both students and administrators. Revenge, post decision making, is sometimes also moulded by religious traditions in the book, the characters coming from a range of religious backgrounds.
It’s clever to have chosen the experienced student situation that Maliha is in which gives her more freedom of movement compared to a first year who would typically be in the larger class situation. I also like how another of the main characters, Jenny, is in a more basic admin job because it gives the author the opportunity to demonstrate how not all of the lecturers are capable of doing the whole job properly—and can even be a charlatan. The home life of the main characters is well done as it gives the person a background which has created who they are in themselves and how they interact with others. There are other characters who give you pause for thought when it comes to revenge on Professor Axel Sloan. Did the only baddie get what he deserved? A read of the book is the only way to find out!
Something jarred with me regarding the verb tense structure – though on a second reading that may not be a problem.
I give this book four and a half stars.
