About the author

Belen del Amo Perez de Lara is a Scottish-born Spaniard. As an only child, raised all around the world, she lived in more than twenty-one cities across four continents by the age of twenty-four. Having to rebuild her life year on year, she was faced with the loss of both her parents to cancer during key periods of her life. She used these life experiences and her professional career to codify a process, shared in this book, that helped her and others thrive in the best and worst of times.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2020I was recommended this book by a friend and started reading it at the beginning of this year, but I had to put it down for a period because what it was asking me to do was confronting: really think about my own goals before I could help my kids think about thier own! I needed a little time to do some soul searching to figure out what that was...
After making a few changes, I picked it up again and easily completed the PERMA(S), self-reflection and goal-setting exercises. In a lightbulb moment, I finally had the courage to accept that my professional goals didnt fit in with my family goals. I turned down a job promotion - one of the best decisions I made this year.
This book simply helped me understand that my ambitions, the things that really matter to me, actually lie outside of my corporate job (for now at least). I had thought I wanted to be Sheryl Sandburg, but I think I have always known that that is not who I am. I have come to realize that at this stage of my life, I can't deny the force that pulls me towards wanting to be with my kids rather than taking a seat at the table alongside senior executives.
With the tools that Del Amo Perez de Lara provides in this book, I am now on my way to raising thoughtful, resilient kids who will thrive in all environments and who will define thier own measures of success. That is worth it's weight in gold!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2020The concept of resilience at first seems fine, if not a little buzz wordy. But there is a fairly deep and substantial behavioral underpinning to the idea, as well as legitimate ways to apply it in self-improvement and child-rearing. A lot of the treatment of the topic skims along the surface, either not giving the concept its due treatment or not providing practical ways to apply the concept. I enjoyed that the author took the time to dig into the psychology and behavioral background of resilience, especially the work by Dr. Carol Dweck. It took on a weight that made me more likely to apply it in my life. Moreover, the help the book provides with practical applications was very welcome. Although I am not a parent, there was plenty for me to apply to my own circumstances and I can imagine parents will find the parent-specific guidance similarly helpful. Glad I read it, and feel like it is some of the best work I've read on the topic of resilience as well as being thoughfully practical regarding application to daily life.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2021This was a very digestible treatment of what is often a challenging skill to teach, resilience, and one that is critical, especially in our COVID era. Practical exercises and activities broken down in a way that is accessible, yet still powerful. As much for parents themselves as it is for them to teach their children. This is the type of content - along with critical and creative thinking - that should be taught explicitly in schools.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2021I can't think of many more important gift to give my children then the ability to be resilient and positive, living life with a growth mindset - Belen's book is an incredible tool to help you do this! The book is so deeply researched and well written and I feel that I learned so much about myself and my own mindset as well. I have already re-read it twice as there is so much to learn and absorb. An excellent book for yourself and your children! I HIGHLY recommend it!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2020I found many answers and practical insights in this book. As a mom of young boys (6 and 7), it is difficult to make them practice/integrate/incorporate the concept of resilience in their life. It is challenging to explain them why. The book helped me understand how to do it myself and then how to teach and practice it with my boys.
It is easy to follow, well researched and gives you lots of practical exercises on how to raise happy-resilient kids!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2020This book is a must read for anyone who wants to raise happy, independent, resilient children who not only are able to get through lifes ups and downs, but actually are able to seek out challenges and new situations. There are great exercises and actionable suggestions on the parenting front. I'd recommend this book for anyone with children, or anyone who interacts with children on a regular basis. Honestly there were some great, thought provoking parts for adults as well!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2020Fantastic book with real insights on how to help yourself and your children build more resilience.
Highly recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2020An insightful and practical book about empowering your children by teaching them (and yourself) how to be resilient in the face of adversity. It is well researched and process-oriented, but rather than delve too deeply into the theoretical, the book provides practical guidelines and clear methods, which make the prospect of reaching one’s goals achievable. My book remains at my bedside with its flagged pages, highlighted paragraphs, and penciled in exercises to refresh my memory on the more daunting days of trying to assist in my child’s “distance learning” while working from home.
I would recommend this book to any parent, particularly in these more trying times where learning to build resilience is an invaluable asset.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-read book for parents and non-parents
I loved Belen’s book. It is very well structured, well written, concise and to the point, and does a great job at summarising complex scientific concepts and making them accessible and digestible. Some of the concepts that most resonated with me were those around ‘stress is enhancing’ mindset, the notion around savouring, etc. I have been recommending this book to my family and friends, and would recommend it to anyone - whether you are a parent or not. It’s a short and very powerful book that helps you get more control over your mind and how you perceive life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I've read many resilience books at this point and this has to be the best. The thoughtfulness and clarity with which it's written is unparalleled. The way the author links resilience and education is by far the best idea I’ve seen to develop gritty kids. The author develops a pragmatic four-step process to help parents to teach and pass skills to their children.
I would 100% recommend this to a friend and have already taken action as a result of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE book for everyone who wants to be the best parent that they can be.
I found this book a really enjoyable and hugely helpful. It's really well written and organised, with personal experience and behavioural suggestions, and I found within it both ideas for myself and turning around my own mindset (especially in a work situation, which can be hard to deal with!) as well how to aid my children when they meet set backs, in any sort of situation. Additionally, there are topics for family discussion - such as how do you view success, and what do you (the children) think that we (parents) think of success for you? Which are definitely conversations I will revisit as my children get older. I've read a lot of books of on child psychology, and liked to think that I knew quite a lot about building resilience in my children, but this still gave me several new ideas to think about, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says in the tin!
I have a 13 year old son, and I am trying for him to develop more self confidence and “gives things a go”. It has not been easy in the past, so when a friend recommended this book as “super effective” I was skeptical.
I read the book over a few days (it is not long but it does require pencil to annotate as you go along and do the exercises), and as I did that I started to utilise some of the tools with my son. So far so good! I already see a difference and most importantly I now have a mental framework on how I can help him build his “resilience muscles”.
I have just bought 3 more copies for my friends with kids, so that says it all
