52 Letters: A year of advice on writing, editing, getting an agent, writing from the heart... Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 34 ratings

If we really wanted to sell you this book, we’d tell you that it’s packed full of useful advice on writing, editing, getting published and marketing your books.

Which is true, admittedly, except that 52 LETTERS also tells you all about the world’s oldest book.

And how to swear in Orcadian (which is a genuine Scottish dialect, unless you prefer to think of it as degenerate Norse, but either way it’s not the world’s most useful language, for swearing or anything else.)

And the book talks about the story you’ve left, and the story you love, and how you have to fall forwards into the book you’re writing now.

And it tells you about mindset mathematics and how to alter your perceptions of what is possible as a writer.

And it tells you why the new management of Barnes & Noble actually means something quite challenging for traditional publishing.

And it talks about all the ways that the publishing industry can treat writers crappily and it offers some helpful advice on how to avoid that kind of treatment yourself.

And it talks about the power of detail and actually gives you some examples which make you think, ‘Yes, I really understand something there and I want to go away right now to put that good advice into practice.’

And just when you think the book is going to stay really grown up and useful and good for you, it’ll unwrap a parcel of darlings and share them with you. Then ask you for darlings of your own and spend time with those too.

Then it’ll talk about the origins of the novel and be puzzled about agents who have set their hearts against speculative fiction.

So by this time, you’ll be thinking that the book is definitely entertaining but it can’t really call itself useful, except then you read something about the simplest technique in fiction (and one that always works), so you decide, dammit, that the book must be entertaining and useful, which sounds like one heck of a combination – and quite possibly something that you need right now this minute.

And, sure, you could look at our Incredibly Meagre Price and decide that your writing career doesn’t deserve even that amount of love, but realistically, you’re not going to do that, so you’re going to click that lovely golden BUY button and be very pleased you did.

Bestselling author, Harry Bingham, has been published all over the world by the biggest publishers in the business. Advanced reviews:
'Harry Bingham is both the most entertaining and the most informing writer on the craft in evidence these days; not since Stephen King’s
On Writing have I so valued a writer’s writing on writing! These aren’t just 52 Letters—they’re love letters, to and for writers of all stripes and stages of accomplishment.' - John David Mann, New York Times bestselling author

‘Harry’s Bingham’s inimitable, jaunty style guides the reader through the labyrinthine complexities of writing and publishing. Based on Jericho Writers up-to-the minute blog posts,
52 Letters informs writers of the rapidly changing landscape of the publishing world and the myriad options to get published in 2020. From publishers to bookstores, mailing-lists to e-books, word-length to word choice, Harry’s got you covered. This is a current, informative, engaging read, essential for every writer, whether a lockdown newbie, a jaded scribbler, or a traditionally published author. It even addresses non-writers in the postscripts to the letters: “Hate writing? Then unsubscribe.” Buy it; you’ll be glad you did.’ - Minne, advanced review copy

I'm Harry Bingham. I write crime novels and love it. When I'm not doing that, I'm heavily involved in Jericho Writers, a pretty amazing company that does all kinds of amazing things with writers.

I live in Oxfordshire, England, but I spent a lot of my childhood in Wales, where my crime novels are set. Things I love apart from writing: wild swimming, rock-climbing, walking, & dogs. I have an absurdly large number of kids and I love my life.

This book doesn't read like a writing manual. It's a series of intimate letters from a wise mentor, passing along his tips and tricks to improve your writing skills. And then there's Harry's sly humor, which catches you unawares and usually coaxes a chuckle out even if you're reading alone. I got a lot out of this book. If you're serious about improving your craft, you can't go wrong reading this one.

Well written and entertaining. Full of useful tidbits for the aspiring writer. A little disjointed and hard to follow occasionally because of the format. But well worth the read.

These letters are from bestselling thriller novelist Harry Bingham’s weekly chat on things writing and writers for those who follow his JERICHO WRITERS business of writer’s services. Everything from free advice to connecting with Agents and Editors, honing your skills to where they should be to kick off your first bestseller or how to spend the annual intensive all-thing-writing weekend at the York Festival Of Writing. Been there, done that, and loved it (2010). It was an absolutely game-changing experience for me and for my own writing.
In no particular order, the letters cover everything you ever wanted to know about getting published, but everywhere there is the sternest of warnings that it is first up to the budding author to shine and trim and polish their work themselves, and how to do that, before approaching professionals for editorial guidance.
Although his company, JERICHO WRITERS, is punted to assure you that they will be there to deal with the product when you are sure you have come as far as you can, Harry is entirely generous with his intense, and free, advice. It is thought provoking, yes, but above all, it is humorous and warmly understanding of writer’s weaknesses, self-doubts, common mistakes and writer’s stubborn egos.
I thoroughly enjoyed this very entertaining book of advice, and highly recommend it to all who want to unleash that novel/non-fiction they have been burning to let free.

These letters are so fun I popped them like candy over the last few days. I’d just plan to read one, but before I knew it I'd gobbled three or four down. I did have to slow down to highlight, and at one point realized Harry's "unbolting the handbrake" approach to finding voice is exactly what I need. Coming to the end, after journeying with Harry from the nitty-gritty of orienting the reader through warmth and psychic distance to authentic marketing (and much more!), I find myself with a lot to digest and to act upon. Highly recommend to writers of all ages and stages!

Harry Bingham is the best. The. Best. No matter where you are in your writers journey, whether just putting down your first sentence or navigating the sometimes shadowy world of agents and publishing, he’s got your back. Reading this book will make you a better writer. I would even put a guarantee on that, if I were in a position to do such a thing.

Informative book for writers/aspiring writers. Very readable and enjoyable. Author writes like he is a trusted, informed friend who has been there and wants you to avoid all the pitfalls and headaches that he went through. Love the messages about being realistic and taking your destiny into your own hands.

Ordered as xmas gift. Haven't read it, but it arrived with bent cover and with sticky waxy smears on the front. I have to gift it, but if I had time I would return it for the new copy I paid for.

Rather than ploughing through chapters of dry advice, this format of actual emails to the author's writing students is easy to read. I picked up gems all the way through and enjoyed the humour sprinkled throughout.
