- Reviewed in the United States on April 13, 2020I enjoyed the different love stories playing out and found all the characters believable and, mostly, likeable. Sarah's struggle to find meaning in her life and to work toward her own happiness is really inspiring. This is the second story I've read over just a couple of weeks featuring a young widow still heart-breakingly in love with her suddenly lost husband. (The Two Lives of Lydia Bird by Josie Silver was the other.)
This story could certainly have moved at a faster pace but then the subtleties and nuances would have been lost and the useful epilogue does tidy everything up very satisfyingly in a racing finish. There is just a touch of the misunderstandings, secrets, lies and assumptions which keep the wheels of television soaps constantly turning. To be honest, not all of the above - I wouldn't want to give any spoilers!
If you find an appeal in decor, domestic architecture and property development then you'll have another sphere of interest here. The author offers many details of the settings and buildings as well as the more usual descriptions of clothes and meals to bring the surroundings to life.
I read a pre-publication copy and my experience was a little spoiled by the flow being interrupted by errors. Usually, I could glide over them and move on rapidly. I expect your experience will be smoother and the story even more enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A charming story of hope and friendship
This was a great read from start to finish. Despite it not being my usual genre and by having any over the top twists or dramatic developments it was enthralling.
I think that the believability of the characters alongside the amazingly detailed description involves you on a personal level. I thoroughly enjoyed the added historical elements and will definitely be looking up this author again!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read.
Once I got to know some of the characters the story slowly unfolded and certainly kept me wanting to see what would happen. Always like happy endings too.

5.0 out of 5 stars An enchanting read
Not my normal genre but a very enjoyable read by a talented author. Written in an easy, engaging style the story rattles along, part mystery and part romance, to a satisfying conclusion. Highly recommended.
