- Reviewed in India on 17 October 2018Verified PurchaseFinishing a book in an hour might seem a herculean task but when you have something like 8 Down From Saharanpur in front of you, it is quite a smooth sail.
The book is a collection of six short stories each containing a different reason to love it. A 70-page read is very engaging and one would seamlessly slip from one story to the other. A few stories draw inspiration from our real lives. This realistic appeal of their content makes a reader identify with it. And there are some which go beyond the realms of our imagination to challenge it. The stories are simple but attractive.
Revenge, fear, patriotism, grief, ambition have painted the narrative with their depth. This is how the stories seem closer to our lives, to our basic self. Emotions extend them that power. They entangle with history and still come out clear. They indulge in the ink of anger and grief and still come out clean. I loved their presentation and crispness which aided in living them. No unnecessary descriptions, no mundane stretches, just to the point narration.
I loved how Muru finds his true calling in serving his nation. I was moved by the two ladies surviving in the shadows of the impenetrable silence. I was thrilled to read through the life that has to face the ‘cursed.’ In the nutshell, I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book.
- Reviewed in India on 15 November 2018Verified PurchaseI have read the author's other two books : Earth to Centauri Part 1 and 2 before, and since then I've been a fan of his unique storylines. This collection of short stories is no different. It is a thoroughly enjoyable collection of short stories that will make you feel lot of emotions throughout the journey.
The book is a collection of 6 short stories:
1. An Eye For An Eye talks of unfaithful love, greed and vengeance
2. Bread, Eggs and My Plan shows how life can present you a surprise when you least expect it, and also shows how little things matter the most
3. Shadows and Silence talks of poverty and loss, with a twist in the end
4. 8 down From Saharanpur brews a sense of nationality
5. The Warrior has a divine vibe to it
6. Shaapit: The 'Cursed' talks surprisingly of zombie apocalypse!!
I loved most of the stories, most remarkably An Eye For An Eye, Shadows and Silence, 8 Down From Saharanpur and Shaapit: The'Cursed'. The thing that I liked the most about these stories is that each story has the quality to surprise the reader ,with a sudden twist at the end. And this surprising factor will make you crave for more. The plots are unique and nicely presented, with the fast paced narrative.
This short book will be a great companion for those boring and monotonous bus and train journeys of everyday life. I hadn't expected a zombie apocalypse at all!! I loved that story..
Definitely recommended if you are looking for short, quick yet engaging reads with plot twists! I personally enjoyed this small yet a whole package of entertainment a lot!!
- Reviewed in India on 11 September 2021Verified Purchase8 down from Saharanpur by author Saurabh Kumar is a bag full of assorted stories. This 100 page quick read collection contain 9 stories touching topics like revenge, insecurity, horror, thriller, mythology, patriotism, zombies etc.
All the stories are fast paced, but few stories I couldn't connect with the author's thought at various point even though the language was simple. The plot of every story had twists.
Two stories which I liked from the book are Shadows and Silence and The con.
I honestly didnt thought of the twist coming at the end of the story The con.
Overall an ok read.
- Reviewed in India on 8 September 2018Verified PurchaseTbh, I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book based on its small description. Nonetheless, when the author approached me to read it & share my views, I decided to give it a try. And boy was I surprised!😀
8 Down from Saharanpur is a collection of 6 short stories by @kumarlauthor written in simple language but laced with emotionally strong perspectives. It stands true to its synopsis & makes you feel what-next-could-happen, all the while the stories actually being complete!😍
What's best is that the themes are obvious as you read but it doesn't pull away the suspense or the thrill ..now how intriguing is that?! The stories have been inspired by everyday incidents, a wee bit of the struggle history, some mythology & a tad effort of imagination imho. Surprisingly, the power of language is such that you may reflect the emotions in your meaningful learned settings.☺
A daughter's revenge that could win or fail, a young boy's dreams dwindling to the reality around him, a man's corporate job woes, the interlacing agony & pursuit for living of a low economy family, the mystery warrior in his own seeking of life & the cursed that we all know of in our imaginary world.
All in all, I haven't read a short stories book in such a long time & this one was pleasant welcome! The best experience in this book was the visually woven words of the story..I could almost see it infront of my eyes as I read them.🤓
Please be noted - The ebook had some grammar errors which have been rectified in the print version. Although it was a bummer for me, it didn't stop me from reading. The author kindly acknowledged to the errors and assured that the printed book will be zero error for OCDs like me!😅

5.0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone
Verified PurchaseThis collection of six short stories has a bit of something for everyone. My personal favorites were the title story and the last one titled “Shaapit: The ‘cursed’.” The title story, “ ‘8 Down From Saharanpur” is told from the point of view of a sixteen-year-old boy in 1925 British-occupied India. My other favorite, “Shaapit: The ‘cursed’ ” is a zombie apocalypse story. There are stories set in the modern day, a ghost story, and a murder story with a twist. The one thing all the stories have in common is good writing and characters with whom you can empathize. While I liked some of the stories better than others, I liked them all. They are just the right length when you don’t have a lot of time to read, and I read one a night before bed until I’d read them all. If you’re a fan of short stories, give this collection a try. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of stories!
Verified PurchaseI enjoyed this collection of stories. I really liked the variety from story to story which really kept things interesting. It means there is something for everyone and it can be refreshing to get partly what you know you love and something really different.
I also enjoyed the writing style, the quality of which helps bind the stories together.
Overall a quick and great read. Recommended for a journey home on a train or a gift to someone who is usually a ‘non-reader’.

4.0 out of 5 stars A really good and interesting short book
Verified PurchaseI really enjoyed reading this collection of 6 short stories ranging from thriller, inspirational to dystopia. The author impressed me not by changing the type of stories but also by displaying different writing styles. As we can read from the blurb the stories are about a revengeful woman, a warrior, revolutionaries, corporate executive, and even zombies! Each well written, crisp and fast-paced with an interesting story-line. My favorite story is 'Bread, Eggs and My Plan' where we can learn about the little things in life and gives us hope as it shows how things turn out in our favor when we least expect! The whole collection made me want to grab another book by the author and recommend him without hesitation to anyone that wants to discover a qualitative writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth The Read
Verified Purchase8 Down from Saharanpur is a collection of six short stories, each detailing different characters and scenarios. What I really enjoyed about the stories were the way they offered such detail and insight into the human condition from differing perspectives. I will admit that some stories I enjoyed more than others, but they were definitely all worth the read. I was most impressed by the author’s descriptions of scenes and emotions, putting me right in the middle of the story. To me, that is the best sign of a truly brilliant writer.
Of all the stories, the last was my favorite. The subject matter is usually one I try to avoid, but the way it was written left me tense and on edge throughout the entire tale. Although there were a few minor grammatical errors, they didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the book at all. I highly recommend and am happy to give 8 Down from Saharanpur 5 stars.
