Excerpt:
On the other side of the world, some ten thousand miles away, a lone man sat in a small tavern, at a candlelit table, surrounded by darkness and drunken strangers. Golden streaks of tangled limp hair reached his shoulders while a heavy woollen cloak hung almost to the ground - covering a torn grey shirt and tired worn breeches. A paralytic lout on the street had lost his shoes to him, plus a handful of loose change. Under the growth of a few days stubble a handsome face was etched, though some would argue it didn't exist at all. The saturated straw didn't bother him either as he supped on his ale, and he barely noticed the pungent aroma of body odour and stale beer. Outside, was a maze of twisting alleyways and hidden corners - best to keep away from those places, people would tell him - but he wasn't scared of those places, nothing scared him anymore.

HISTORY OF THE KINGDOM

There are none who can say with certain knowledge when the Kingdom of Durundal began, yet this has not stopped the dragons, the kings, the sorcerers and other wise-ones from seeking the answer. What we do know is that dragons ruled supreme and considered by many to be the Dawn of Time.

This was a time when Elves, Dragons, Humans and Forest Folk were all at peace and lived in harmony—but in time, something changed.

Power and Ambition.

The Fates stepped in with a prophecy; a prophecy that proclaimed a 'chosen one' would rule the kingdoms with knowledge and wisdom and bring peace to the realm. However, the Dark Lord in his rage and eternal damnation vowed he would do everything in his power to stop it.

And so it was—the Dark Lord became unstoppable as his Disciples of Death searched out the chosen one. Barbaric! Uncivilised! Numerous! It is said that the earth cried blood and the barren soil left behind bore no fruit. The dragons disappeared, the Elves retreated, the Forest Folk went underground. Hearts were broken, loved-ones were lost, thrones were burned, and the kingdoms were in turmoil. Many said that darkness would prevail and man would never be understanding of acceptance and remain beyond all evil.

Yet—there was hope. The Prophecy was beginning to unfold; and with it came the Age of Heroes.

Welcome to the Kingdom of Durundal.

Dynamic characters and a riveting plotline come together seamlessly in S.E. Turner's epic medieval fantasy, "A Leopard in the Mist" as one brother sets out to rescue his sibling from a power-mad emperor bent on reclaiming his lost empire.

Effective writing, relatable characters, fascinating world-building, and an exciting plotline are the hallmarks of Turner's story. There are romances that will sweep you off your feet, betrayals that are as shocking as they are raw, and familial ties that are surprisingly strong despite years of isolation. In "A Leopard in the Mist", readers will find themselves falling in love with these characters--especially the strong female leads--and becoming part of the story as they develop a close personal connection and affinity for certain protagonists while experiencing a great revulsion for those who willingly sink into darkness and depravity.

Despite the fact that I had not had the opportunity to read either of the prior chapters in the Kingdom of Durundal Series, I found this third book, "A Leopard in the Mist", made for an excellent standalone read. The author effectively reintroduces her characters in this continuing saga, and in case there's still any confusion about who's who, she provides a roster--as well as other helpful materials--as a reference point at the back of the book.

To sign a peace treaty, Clan Head Namir leaves for Ataxata, but fails to return. The Clan people fear the worst. Now Lyall and his people must follow the dizzying, complex and treacherous path and do everything in their power to fight the evil forces and save the kingdom.
This third installment in the series unravels earlier story lines, weaving an intricate tale of action, adventure, betrayal, romance, family ties, and destiny. The adventure and intrigue is electrifying, the prose vivid, and romance angle provides a relief from the high violence and bloodshed.

With its carefully controlled tension, high suspense, satisfying final revelation, and thoroughly constructed characters, the book makes for a highly engrossing read.

The magnificent Kingdom of Durundal ~

Series Information:

The Kingdom of Durundal is an award-winning epic 12-part fantasy/adventure/drama that boasts a wealth of researched history, mythology and folklore.

Book 1 is 'A Hare in the Wilderness' where the child of prophecy has been chosen by the Fates. Her task is to prove she is worthy of leading her people out of the darkness and into the light. The next 10 books follow the journey of those who cross her path - directly and indirectly.

The animals used in the titles of the first five books are totems; symbols of courage and strength, guides and talismans.

Books 6, 7, 8 introduce the Sorceress of the Sapphire and how the prophecy is finally fulfilled.

Books 9, 10, 11 expose the back story behind several of the key characters. Who they really are and what changed them; for the greater good . . . or for the worse.

The Prophecy is book 12 and a prequel to the series. This book details the origins of the prophecy amid the dawn of time - when dragons, dwarves and elves ruled the kingdoms and the Dark Lord vowed to plunge the kingdoms into eternal darkness and rule with fear.

Inspiration comes from my interest in the past; in ancient civilisations and dynasties; the kings, emperors, dictators, leaders and religious ambassadors. The Kingdom of Durundal is an epic 12-part-saga, steeped in layers of blood-feuds, warring deities, and at the centre of it all - the common people fighting their own battles in order to survive.

Books in the series are:

1) A Hare in the Wilderness

2) A Wolf in the Dark

3) A Leopard in the Mist

4) A Stag in the Shadows

5) A Moth in the Flames

6, 7, 8) Sorceress of the Sapphire parts 1,2,3

9) Severn

10) Sable

11) Sagitta

12/Prequel) The Prophecy

I had a specific reason for writing 12 books, as the number 12 carries religious and universal data in addition to mythological and magical symbolism. It represents perfection, completeness and holds a significant value in astrology. Notably, all my dragons in Sagitta ( Book 11) are named after the constellations.

When people read these books, I hope they enter a world that they will never want to leave behind - a story that, when retold, reveals even more than the first time around.

"Is that why we mourn so much in death, for the unsaid word in life? Is that why we can't let go, for misplaced promises and the lost hours that we try to grab when it's all too late?

Embedded in this beautiful story is a profound exploration of grief and loss, and the struggle that humans have in resolving their emotions and experiences when they confront the inevitable changes that accompany the passing of someone they have loved and valued.
At more than one point in the narrative, the reader is compelled to consider those soul-searching questions again as the overwhelming power of grief resonates deeply within both the characters and the reader.

It is a moving and at times heart-wrenching story of coming of age and fulfilling destiny by making the right decisions, not just for oneself but also for the society in which one lives.

The strands of different characters' stories are drawn together in this book, having been interwoven and overlaid throughout the series so far. Overall, the series provides a rich and broad tapestry of narrative that blends earthen tones with royal purples and other vivid colours and textures.

When one of the characters reflects on the events and challenges of the past, and the things he has learned about society and humanity, he says "I personally can't see a successful future where one person thinks they are better than another person." This is where the relevance of this series for each of us is really driven home: when we treat one another as equals, we are all better off, both individually and collectively.

The third in Turner's 'KIngdom of Durundal' series, 'A Leopard In The Mist' brings this excellent trilogy of books (thus far) full circle, providing unity and resolutions not only for its own part of the story, but also for the first two books in this excellent series.

I can not recommend this book, or the series to which it belongs, more highly.

I couldn't wait to get started on A Leopard in the Mist (Book 3), a direct sequel to A Wolf in the Dark (Book 2), with the addition of three new characters (Cornelius, Gya and Macus) who not only add to the mystery, but confound the newly earned reign of peace as brothers Namir and Lyall try to rebuild their kingdoms. A dose of sweet romance softens the highly frustrating and heartbreaking scenes of torture and death as the battle of good vs. evil continues in the Kingdom of Durundel. Turner does not shy away from hard topics and the lessons to be learned in this book are many. A very satisfying, very heart-rending read, highly recommended.

What makes one ruler benevolent while another seeks power at any cost? Is it one's upbringing or is it hereditary? Amid the unfolding story of the clans and their struggles, these questions give the reader more to think about. Exiled Cornelius returns to take over his father's kingdom, but his fears of being overpowered lead him down a dark path. A wonderful look at how different leaders rule their people, and the results of those efforts. And always, I enjoy the wonderful descriptions and details of life scattered throughout the tale, that immerse you in the world of the clans and their beliefs.

An interesting story with important themes of friendship, collaboration and peace versus animosity, power and war along with the nurture versus nature debate.
I was especially impressed with the author's descriptions of the natural world. My favourite scene was the swirling fog adding to the suspense created by his wife's dream when Namir travels in the hope of signing a peace treaty.
A strong, well-written, fast-paced story with relatable characters.
