THE SECOND NOVEL IN THE KINGDOM OF DURUNDAL SERIES - THE GRIPPING WOLF IN THE DARK.

The prophecy is being fulfilled, yet the Dark Lord and his disciples continue to grow in strength and numbers.

IN THE KINGDOM OF DURUNDAL, HEARTS WILL BE BROKEN, LOVED ONES LOST AND THRONES BURNED.

Lyall has lived and breathed nightmares since he was fourteen-years-old. He believed he knew every horror and was beyond surprise.

HE WAS WRONG!

When General Domitrius Corbulo launches a brutal attack on Castle Dru in Durundal, he slaughters everyone inside.

EXCEPT ONE!

Though two years after finding salvation in a clan, Lyall is one of many captives taken to Ataxata to fight in the Killing Games.

However, the man who is training Lyall to fight and kill his comrades is the same man who attacked and destroyed his ancestral home.

Fuelled with anger and facing certain death, Lyall desperately needs a plan of escape.

SOON!

But the only one who can save him and his comrades is locked up in a tower under the pain of death. Can our hero outsmart their captors, or are they simply another victim in the Dark Lord's master plan ?

IN THIS AGE OF HEROES, WHAT IS NOW HAS GONE BEFORE AND WILL RISE AGAIN.

Excerpt:
The weather seemed to change within minutes of them standing there. A rough wind brought clouds the colour of granite with sheets of driving rain, while the pallor of the November sky closed in upon the mountains cloaking them in mist and obscuring the moon. And for all the tightly secure windows, there must have been a small crack in one of the panes, because every now and again little tears of rain ran down the inside and collected in pools on the edge of the sill. Somewhere in the distance a wolf howled, the queen shivered, the king moistened his dry mouth. The lone wolf was mourning, and it hung like a shroud over the weeping castle.

What readers are saying:

I love this series!
This book is about Namir and Lyall (the two characters we saw at the end scene of the first book) and I was happy to find more details on the events that had happened in the first book like General's attack on Clan on the Giant's Claw, the abduction of Dainn and Rufus and their miraculous return. I loved, absolutely loved, the descriptions in the book. They were poetic and very vivid. I also enjoyed the bravery, the friendships and the relationships of the clan people. The characters are very likable from Namir, Lyall to Skyrah. The books in this series are a must read for fantasy lovers. ★★★★★

A Wolf in the Dark
This story runs parallel to book one, but tells the story of what happened to the captive boys, forced to "entertain" the emperor. It proves that females don't have to take on the roles of men or behave in a masculine fashion in order to be bad-ass. Skyrah is one smart girl who knows the best way to defeat her enemy. This episode reminds me of Rome and the gladiators, although it's more violent and death is the only end for each day's battle. You get to experience a more humane side of the General, proving that there is good and bad in everyone. There's also more great development of clan beliefs and customs in this book as well. Loads of research is evident in this story, adding so much depth to the fabulous tale as it unfolds. ★★★★★

HISTORY OF THE KINGDOM

There are none who can say with certain knowledge when the Kingdom of Durundal began, yet this has not stopped the dragons, the kings, the sorcerers and other wise-ones from seeking the answer. What we do know is that dragons ruled supreme and considered by many to be the Dawn of Time.

This was a time when Elves, Dragons, Humans and Forest Folk were all at peace and lived in harmony—but in time, something changed.

Power and Ambition.

The Fates stepped in with a prophecy; a prophecy that proclaimed a 'chosen one' would rule the kingdoms with knowledge and wisdom and bring peace to the realm. However, the Dark Lord in his rage and eternal damnation vowed he would do everything in his power to stop it.

And so it was—the Dark Lord became unstoppable as his Disciples of Death searched out the chosen one. Barbaric! Uncivilised! Numerous! It is said that the earth cried blood and the barren soil left behind bore no fruit. The dragons disappeared, the Elves retreated, the Forest Folk went underground. Hearts were broken, loved-ones were lost, thrones were burned, and the kingdoms were in turmoil. Many said that darkness would prevail and man would never be understanding of acceptance and remain beyond all evil.

Yet—there was hope. The Prophecy was beginning to unfold; and with it came the Age of Heroes.

Welcome to the Kingdom of Durundal.

The magnificent Kingdom of Durundal ~

Series Information:

The Kingdom of Durundal is an award-winning epic 12-part fantasy/adventure/drama that boasts a wealth of researched history, mythology and folklore.

Book 1 is 'A Hare in the Wilderness' where the child of prophecy has been chosen by the Fates. Her task is to prove she is worthy of leading her people out of the darkness and into the light. The next 10 books follow the journey of those who cross her path - directly and indirectly.

The animals used in the titles of the first five books are totems; symbols of courage and strength, guides and talismans.

Books 6, 7, 8 introduce the Sorceress of the Sapphire and how the prophecy is finally fulfilled.

Books 9, 10, 11 expose the back story behind several of the key characters. Who they really are and what changed them; for the greater good . . . or for the worse.

The Prophecy is book 12 and a prequel to the series. This book details the origins of the prophecy amid the dawn of time - when dragons, dwarves and elves ruled the kingdoms and the Dark Lord vowed to plunge the kingdoms into eternal darkness and rule with fear.

Inspiration comes from my interest in the past; in ancient civilisations and dynasties; the kings, emperors, dictators, leaders and religious ambassadors. The Kingdom of Durundal is an epic 12-part-saga, steeped in layers of blood-feuds, warring deities, and at the centre of it all - the common people fighting their own battles in order to survive.

Books in the series are:

1) A Hare in the Wilderness

2) A Wolf in the Dark

3) A Leopard in the Mist

4) A Stag in the Shadows

5) A Moth in the Flames

6, 7, 8) Sorceress of the Sapphire parts 1,2,3

9) Severn

10) Sable

11) Sagitta

12/Prequel) The Prophecy

I had a specific reason for writing 12 books, as the number 12 carries religious and universal data in addition to mythological and magical symbolism. It represents perfection, completeness and holds a significant value in astrology. Notably, all my dragons in Sagitta ( Book 11) are named after the constellations.

When people read these books, I hope they enter a world that they will never want to leave behind - a story that, when retold, reveals even more than the first time around.

Once again, I found the backdrop of Turner's story to be riveting and inspiring, in A Wolf in the Dark, even more so, since a large part of the story takes place at the Emperor's Court. The fact that the Clans people have so much wisdom, knowledge, and appreciation for the beauty of the earth stands in sharp contrast to the false assumptions and selfish ways of the wicked Emperor and his General. An admirable cast of characters including young men Lyall and Namir, Clan leader, Laith, and the heroic and ingenious Skyrah are knit together in ways that are both endearing and very satisfying. I loved the way Skyrah caused trouble and yet saved the day, allowing an exceptional young woman to shine. I loved that even the evil General had a tender side. The book explores complex themes and is very absorbing and engaging. I highly recommend this entire series.

Rather than being a sequel to 'A Hare In The Wilderness', this is the parallel story that converges in some places with the first book, although is never repetitive as it is told from a completely different perspective.

Once again, Turner explores themes of human nature, perseverance and overcoming in this action-packed story which is as original as its companion volume. While there are certainly moments filled with despair and fear, the author focuses the reader on the positive mental strength and determination of the lead characters in enabling them to endure their trials.

Unlike the first instalment of the story, a good deal of the action of this story takes place at court, answering some of the readers' questions and heightening their involvement in both levels of the story. Once again, the story is full of engaging and likeable characters, along with a few who are easy to detest, while the occasional blurring of those boundaries makes the story even more interesting.

While the most cetral character is male, there is also a very strong and resourceful female lead character who personifies the qualities of loyalty and teamwork in a way that is inspiring for all readers. Something I really like to see in a story is people being united by their challenges and working together for good, regardless of gender, class or anything else that might divide them.

With many positives woven into the one compelling story, 'A Wolf In The Dark' would work perfectly well as a standalone, but is even better enjoyed in the context of its companion story.

This book is told as the same storyline but from a different point of view as the first book. You gain more knowledge of the lands and everyone’s place in them.
I was sad to learn the fate of some of the characters from the first book.

We start with Lyall and his journey to overcome a horrible act and his fears. I felt so bad for this kid but he finds kindness with a new people. He soon learns things about himself that changes his place in the world and he has a new purpose.

I really loved the camaraderie and the lessons learned and especially how the characters evolved throughout the book.

The author has a writing style that is enjoyable to read. You won’t be disappointed by picking up this series.

A Wolf in the Dark is a coming of age fantasy book, that takes place in another world. It is about a teenage boy, Lyrall. Lyrall's father was a king who taught him courage and preparedness. His teachings came in handy as one night, a general and his army came to Lyrall's home, killing his parents and destroying his home, but not before Lyrall escaped. Though he was now an orphan, Lyrall found refuge with a clan not too far from his home. However, someone in this clan knows a secret about Lyrall that he soon learns and it helps him find the strength he needs to take on the general.

A Wolf in The Dark is a fantastic coming of age second book in this series. This long-ago legend, when kings ruled and atrocious wars were fought to take over territories and possessions, is well written with many twists and turns. The author embedded many visual descriptions and painted images with words that held me spelled bound as I continued to trek through this chronicle. It kept me on the edge of my seat anticipating what would happen next to the young future king. Book number three should hold just as much enjoyment for the reader.

This book was a fun read and had errors throughout. The beginning of the book was strong and after the boy escapes does it get a bit boring and repetitive. This is the second book in this series and seems to be a stand a lone book. I'm not sure if I'll read the next book. I'm sure at some point the characters will encounter each other.

From being a sheltered and coy fourteen year old prince who must learn to fight his demons, literally that is, to being the one in charge of the clan's destiny, Prince Lyall's journey is simply unpredictable. I could feel his pain in the first few chapters as his family is ripped apart by the tyrant General, whom he must punish in the end. His escape through the tunnel that leads him to safety, is equally miraculous. The story shifts you to the edge of your seat at so many points, you just wish everything goes well for the prince and his two friends.
The book holds your hand and takes you to the imaginary land of Durundal, where demonic Kings rule and yet peace must be preserved. It's a story of great valor, compassion, team work and courage. I learned many words of Medieval origin, the kind of swords and other objects of warfare that the clans used. It was new and interesting. I liked the authors lucid style of writing which didn't let my thoughts go astray and I finished the book once I started reading it.
Girl power shone through out the narrative, Skyrah and her knowledge of the local herbs and their medicinal uses, that she puts to good use as she plans the escape, was simply amazing.
To sum it up, it's an interesting read if you like reading fantasies tinged with suspense, drama and age old wisdom.

4.0 out of 5 stars A richly worded and epic fantasy read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 31, 2025
A richly worded novel and book two in the Kingdom of Durundal series. The world-building is extensive and there are plenty of engaging characters to root for. With an epic Game of Thrones feel, this is a series for the long haul and would not suit lovers of a quick read.

Telling the tale of young Prince Lyall, he is the sole survivor when his castle home is attacked. Seeking refuge with a clan of savages, he discovers they are not savages at all. Being accepted into their clan, Lyall grows to manhood developing survival skills that will stand him in good stead in his plans to reclaim his throne. However, evil lurks and Lyall and his found family face an ultimate challenge that will test them to the limits.

There was much I enjoyed about this book; however, it is a very wordy read. The author uses a lot of descriptive words that she possibly didn’t need to, and I can understand how this could frustrate many readers. The tale was an interesting one though, and for those who appreciate a more literary and old-fashioned read, this would tick all the right boxes.

A lengthy read that lovers of classic high fantasy such as the Sword of Shannara and Lord of the Rings series will appreciate, but which may be too wordy for readers of modern light fantasy
