A Bond of Venom and Magic (The Goddess and the Guardians Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 512 ratings

Betrayal. Divided loyalties. War. One story. Two sides. And a bond that might break their world apart.

Diamond Gillon dreams of a life beyond the confines of the small farming town where she has grown up. She has suffered years of torment because of her mixed fae and human heritage. But for reasons he won't fully explain, her father refuses to let her leave.

When her home is attacked, her only escape is with a band of warriors led by an arrogant human prince, and a dangerous fae warrior who stirs her heart in a way he shouldn't. Not when he serves the fae queen.

Far from all she knows, Diamond discovers that the fae world is a cruel and terrifying place. Her dream of freedom soon turns into a nightmare. One where the magic she hides is condemned and discovery means certain death.

The ruthless, yet devastatingly handsome fae warrior confuses her with his kind gestures, yet harsh words. When he does the unthinkable and defies his queen to save Diamond, both of their lives are changed forever. His actions create a forbidden bond, one that should never exist. But Hugo Casimir's life belongs to the fae queen. There is no escape for either of them.

Drawn deeper into Hugo's life, danger lurks at every turn.

Will Hugo betray all he has ever known for their forbidden bond, or will he serve his queen and become the biggest threat Diamond has ever faced?

I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars! This was seriously one of the best books I’ve read all year! I was sucked in right away with the first page and found it be such a breath of fresh air! Jewels like this come few and far in between. It was such an extremely FUN, magical, and fantastic read. I found myself excited to continue reading it. I sometimes find myself trying to rush through boring or slow parts in books, but there was nothing slow or boring about this and I wanted to savor every page.

This was exactly the type of fantasy book that I crave and look for but can hardly find. I know sometimes it can be done too childishly and cause severe eye rolling, but this just had the perfect balance of magic and maturity.

I thought it was pretty cool how we got the seeker’s point of view. And gosh, the romance has just that perfect slow burn that has you begging for that perfect moment, while at the same time unraveling the mystery and uncovering more layers of all he was. I loved getting inside Hugo’s head as well as Diamond’s. Plus the timing of the switches in the point of views felt natural. I thought the first part was intense, but dang, the second part had me so nervous, I was biting my nails! I seriously cannot wait to read the next one in the series! Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read this amazing book!

Lately I have not had much luck with indie books, but you can tell that Karen Tomlinson has put in the work to make A Bond of Venom and Magic one of the most well-polished indie novels I have read since Elise Kova’s Air Awakens series. Tomlinson is a true wordsmith, and has created an enthralling world that I was sucked into from the first chapter.

The characters in ABOVAM are great as well. Diamond (while occasionally frustrating as hell… but for a good reason), was completely refreshing as a main character.

    She’s not confident.

    She’s not snarky and witty.

She’s a young, terrified halfblood fae with a gentle heart, who is prone to panic attacks, and has been ripped from the quiet life she has always known. As much as I like swagger and snark in my MC’s, it was refreshing to read something different for a change. Diamond is a character that is relatable on many levels, and her character development was a treat to follow through ABOVAM.

Hugo, however, really frustrated me. And I understand why he had to make the decisions he made, but gods above, I really want to just smack him. I wish Diamond could just say “So long sucker!” And high tail it out of Valentia and away from the crazy fae Queen! But she can’t ( for reasons) so I will leave that be for now.

The world of Avalonia that Tomlinson has created is amazing. Her world building is so vibrant and there are so many layers of it that I was just completely in love. I am a sucker for good world building, and I’m about ready to just pack my bags and start exploring – though to be honest the seekers and dragons/guardians sound bit terrifying. So maybe I’ll just stay home.

This book is incredibly fast paced, and one of my only complaints is that it was at times too fast paced for me. There was so much action that I occasionally found myself just wishing that things could settle down for just a moment for Diamond and her friends. I think perhaps slowing it down a bit could have allowed me to get to know some characters better, like Tom and Jack. I really wanted to get to know Jack better *winks*.

To wrap this up, if you like high fantasy novels, action packed adventure, and amazing world building, then be sure to pick up A Bond of Venom and Magic.

Loved it! Seventeen year old Diamond was unhappy with the life she has, hidden away in a little town with her father. When monsters come hunting her, she wishes for that boring life.

As Diamond relies on her old family friend, her best friend, and a Queens guard to get her to safety, they run into new allies and more enemies. This book is action packed with fae warriors and enemies out of fairy tales.

Diamond realizes that she is not safe anywhere, as even the Queen covets what Diamond has, and wants to make her into a weapon to defend her kingdom. The Queen and the Wraith Lord both want Diamonds power.

Diamond is betrayed by a friend, and has to wonder if she can rely on Hugo, the queens guard who saved her life, or if he will betray her too.

A Bond of Venom And Magic is an amazing book that leaves you wanting more. Yes, it ends in a cliffhanger, and I can't wait for book two!

I’m a sucker for Facebook ads involving up and coming authors and their stories. I’m glad I took a chance on ABOVAM. I was not disappointed. It was a fascinating world that the author created and I really enjoyed her characters. She did a great job of illustrating Diamond as her young, naive, and overly trusting heroine who slowly begins to grow and awaken to the harsh reality that life isn’t fair, people don’t always keep their word, and that letting such truths break you can render your life meaningless. She begins to develop an inner strength and confidence which is fun to see throughout the story. It isn’t instantaneous which is more realistic to me. Others might find her frequent victimization frustrating but I found it relatable and grew to care for the character even more because of that connection. I look forward to the next book!

If there is just one book in your life that you need to read, then this is it! This book is one of the best books that I have read in a very long time. Not only is it a breathtaking story, but it is really well written and edited.
This book grabbed me right from the very first few pages, and you just know that when a book does that you won't be able to put it down until you've consumed it all in one sitting, which is exactly what I did.
This book has it all, action, fantasy, adventure, one hot, brooding, swoon worthy fae male and a building romance that'll have you begging for more.
Diamond, who is our main character is the perfect heroine. Yes, she is young and naive, but she has led a very sheltered and protected life until she is suddenly thrust right into the action and dangers of her world. I think she actually grows and adapts very well, especially with all the secrets she suddenly discovers about herself. Towards the end of the book I think she'd really started to become a strong woman, rather than just a naive girl and I'm really looking forward to seeing more of her character development, flaws and all, as really that's what makes the best characters in books that they're not all perfect and I think Karen Tomlinson has written some great characters.
Hugo (the brooding, swoon worthy fae) is a complex character and I can't wait to discover more about him in future books. I found myself wondering at points during the book, do I like him? By the end I'd made my decision and I can see the reasons he is the way that he is and that a lot of his actions are because he is protecting himself and those he cares deeply about. I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens next with him, Diamond and a lot of the other characters too.
The world building in this book is another thing that has been well perfected. This really is one of those books where you can imagine yourself right in the action. I could clearly see the scenes and surroundings in my minds eye whilst reading and it really did transport me away to another world. That cover is also an exquisite piece of art and really catches your eye. I can't wait to have the paperback copy of this book and to place it right there on my bookshelf so I can see it everyday.
This book gets the full five stars from me for enjoyment, character and world building, fantasy (guys, how could I forget to mention there are dragons in this book, my favourite), action and romance. What more could you ask for?
I think I am still recovering from the book hangover reading this gave me, but to me that's the sign of a good book because it drew me in to its pages and embedded itself firmly into the depths of my mind that I won't forget it. I'm now impatiently awaiting the next book, and even though I know that'll give me another book hangover, it's more than worth it for having the chance to read something so amazingly beautiful and awesome. Seriously, buy this book now and step into it the wonderful treasure that is A Bond of Venom and Magic.

Enjoyed reading this story so much. I literally felt like i was in their world and experiencing everything right along with them. This book reminds me why i liked this genre to begin with. I somehow kept getting the same type of books on urban fantasy, while good for an easy quick read, they all seemed to turn into reverse harem and not too deep and were too short. Had started to think that's what's out there now, but thankfully this opened my eyes to see so much is out there there all blended into one and after a few forget where one ended and another begun. This has all the signs of an epic saga and im thoroughly hooked! Before i even got to the end i raced back to amazon kindle to check that the next one was out and got it before sighing in relief and anticipation of more to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Fey Fantasy Read!
Reviewed in Australia on December 17, 2016
3.5 Stars (I've decided to split the difference)

Right, so I've had a few days to think about it, and I've come to conclusion that overall, I really enjoyed A Bond of Venom and Magic, but I did have a few issues, which I'll be discussing below. This review will be another of my what I liked/what I didn't like.

    Alright, what I liked:

The world was very interesting, and there are heaps, yes, HEAPS of fight scenes/dramatic moments. This plot is certainly emotionally driven, and whilst I had some problems with the plot speed, A Bond of Venom and Magic is a fun, fantasy read. I had a great time reading it.

The characters were fascinating, although to be really honest, only the two leads - Diamond and Hugo - really get fully fleshed out and explored. Some of the secondary characters begin to be explored (like Jack), but I was disappointed that with some of the characters, like the best friend Thomas, we actually don't get to learn much at all. This best friend relationship I felt was really important, and whilst we were told they were close and important to each other, but I never actually saw that depicted within the relationship. I really hope in the next book that Thomas gets some more page time, as I really wanted to warm to more of the secondary characters, but I just didn't feel the connection when they were only in a handful of scenes.

Finally, the real strength of A Bond of Venom and Magic is the romance. The mating bond is fascinating and the best part of this book. I really enjoyed reading about how the relationship between Diamond and Hugo formed, developed and hit wall after wall. Their characters are complex, and what happens to them and between them was really intriguing and their reactions were genuine. The conflict and contradictions of their relationship will be riveting to read as it develops in the next few books.

    What I didn't like:

As I mentioned above, I did feel that apart from the two main characters, we don't actually get to know any of the other characters at all. Diamond is an interesting character, and Hugo is suitably brooding and aloof, but in the long run, I really hope Diamond makes Hugo work for her affection, after the ending in this book.

Another point that annoyed me was that a lot of the fight scenes involved... choking. Diamond gets choked/strangled a lot, and so do other characters. By the third time, I was beginning to wonder why these characters weren't shaking it up a bit - stabbing, slashing, blasting, etc. Not really a problem, but it did annoy me a little that it appeared that strangulation was the main form of killing/fighting.

Whilst the plot was great, I would have to warn that in parts it does drag a little, and that there is a lot of inner monologue. I didn't mind it in parts, but after several chapters with not much happening, it did get a little boring, and I had to put the book down for a while. Also, the ending does seem to drag a little - there was a perfect point for it to end on a cliffhanger, and then it went on for another several chapters.

Apart from those few points, I really enjoyed A Bond of Venom and Magic and I can't wait to read on in the series, and there is such great potential for growth in the characters, romance and world, which I look forward to discovering in the next book! I certainly recommend this book to readers who enjoy fantasy worlds of fey, with mating bonds, action, and drama, drama, drama, and looking for a fun read, then definitely pick up this book!
