Will her past threaten her future ...

Mrs Penny Hampson is a discovery, she propose classic regency tale with a twist. And a rollercoaster ride it was.
What looked like a simple rescue, on a whim of her savior, opens the door to more intrigues than the heroine would have expected.
While Sophia knows who she is, she does not knows her origins, her raising was lonely without love. Here she is, a lonely miss of mysterious birth, seeking a companion post after avoiding a far darker fate. But why in first instance did she find herself in this predicament...
Phil is a gentleman, unable to turn his nose when he spots a woman in dire straits. Thus how he finds himself with a new charge, one not very willing to follow his order once she is safe.
Sophia while with few choices and options is no meek miss, she wants her say in the decisions made about her future.
Phil can be sure like most men very overwhelming, but it is not out of care for other’s feelings, more because he has the habit to take charge.
Why their relationship is at first strained by doubts and suspicions, their trust to one another is not something easily won, they both will have to work for it.
About the conspiracy, Phil more than one time raises the issue of why Sophia was specifically targeted. Yet no one really follows this lead, why they are for a shock why things are revealed.

In all, it was a diverting and pleasant read.

Well-written and researched Regency tale with a lovely cover depicts the life of a young woman (Sophia) who, unfortunately, continuously gets kidnapped for nefarious reasons. Along comes Secret Service agent Phil constantly to the rescue at the most opportune moments in attempts to decipher the reason behind it all. Much character development and descriptions are involved; however, somewhat repetitive and tedious at times. Many new and interesting terms depicted from the era. Yet, paragraph margin indentations are so minimal, it appears to be one continuous block of words which became disconcerting to read. Otherwise, a good Regency suspense novel for those who enjoy this era.

This was a light and enjoyable read for those who like a little adventure in their historical romance. The characters are likable and well-drawn and their relationship has a nice, steady growth from strangers to lovers. There were some annoying plot points that seemed really not necessary in my opinion, and the heroine, for all she is supposed to be intelligent and capable, had some very stupid thought processes that, while they moved the plot forward, seemed quite lazy, again in my opinion. But the writing was good and the mystery—such as it was—kept my interest. A fun, quick read!

This is quite a long and drawn out story but entertaining non the less. I wanted to just shake Sophia a number of times for being so hard headed. The whole story is well written and had a good plot. Some research is needed for proper use of items. For instance , the use of "Turkey" carpet. It is Turkish carpet. There are a few other similar incorrect uses of words but overall it is a nice, entertaining story.

All of the books in this series involve strong women who end up assisting intelligent men help save England from the dastardly French spies. There is plenty of action and romance (but thankfully no sex) in these books. It is fun to watch the characters grow and change and to follow the story of the evil spies throughout the series.

Excellent characters and a good story line. Plenty of layers to keep the intruige going. A good mix of thriller and romance, although a little predictable in parts.

Having thoroughly enjoyed "An Officer's Vow" I am sorry to say I was disappointed in this book.
The hero and heroine both come across as insipid. For a spy he is too easily taken in. And she comes across as foolish rather than brave in most of the things she does. The admiral and his wife are much more interesting characters than Phil and Sophia.
Hopefully the next book by Penny Hampson will be more fun.
