- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2017It's all about the words! This was my first book by Alora Kate and won't be my last. I thoroughly enjoyed this suspenseful, engaging read. I love the characters; I love them so much I went ahead and preordered the next book in the series.
This story focuses on Ki and Prescot. These two meet by chance because of Ki's work, but they keep running into each other after that. I really loved Ki. She is relatable and normal, with a love of wine, frugality, and organization, but she also has body image issues. She has realistic reactions to events, and actually has a brain that she uses. Prescot is a proud lawyer and a man of few words, intelligent but coming from a bad childhood. He is endearing, despite his tendency to think in really short sentences when we saw his POV. It bugged me at times, but that's just me. What also bugged me was when Ki went through stages of thinking she wasn't beautiful or worth it in the beginning, but thankfully she has a really good friend who helped. She grew out of that and more. And together, these two bonded immediately, and liked one another. They got one another, and once decided that they would be together, there was nothing to stop them. They had amazing chemistry, and I really like them as a couple. I can see them growing old together since they actually talk to one another.
Overall I really loved this book! As I mentioned before, there were moments that I didn't love both of the main characters, but those were few. The mystery in the story was one I didn't see coming, although it certainly was convenient in moments. If you're only in it for the suspense and mystery, that aspect will probably turn you off, and plus the mystery isn't the main focus. It is there, but it all flows together with the plot, which is definitely there. I just really liked Ki, because she was normal, and she treated people right. She has a best friend (who is getting her own book next) who is great, but especially when it came to love, she didn't try to string along or hurt anyone, which I appreciated, as it meant that there was no real love triangle. You'll understand why I mention the love triangle thing if you read it, which I highly recommend you doing. The only bad part for some is that the ending is more of a Happy For Now, rather than HEA. More of them will pop in during the next book in the series, which will be nice. If you love a good romance, with some heat, good friendships, and a little suspense thrown in, this is perfect for you.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from Quill and Ink reviews. This is my honest and voluntary review of the book. I also bought the book because I loved it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2018This is the first book by this author I've ever read, and I have to say, I really enjoyed it. Alora's character development is well done, especially with the villains she created. While I would have loved more detail in their backgrounds to fill in some gaps, the bad guys, especially Prescot's abusive mother had me reeling. There were times I was actually audibly yelling at the book like the characters could actually hear me and that says something about this writer. She envelopes you into her world and keeps you engaged. I wish there had been more detail to fill in gaps and maybe this will be taken care of in future books in the series, but overall, I enjoyed this work very much and have put this series on my to read list.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2018This book had many moving parts. At times, it was hard to keep track of what was going. The story is good. Ki is a private detective and serves people as well. She end up falling for Prescot who has his own problems. Lucas wants Ki. I want to know how it all ends.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2018A Beautiful Heartbreak by Alora Kate
*A Beautiful Heartbreak* is the first in the NYC series by Alora Kate.
I enjoyed this story enormously. It was told in dual POV. Ki is a spunky woman trying to get her PI business off the ground when she runs across the brooding Prescot. They have instant chemistry even though they both resist it initially. The dual POV is wonderfully done. The way that Alora Kate wrote Prescot's parts gives the reader a great insight into how his mind is working. In contrast, Ki's POV is light and humorous.
As mentioned before, they have a great chemistry that just flows off the pages. It is hilarious the lengths they go to avoid it, but they end up finding out that they need each other.
Besides the story being a romance, there is unexpected suspense as someone starts stalking Ki and Prescot gets into accident. Can their budding relationship handle the stress? Or will they go their separate ways?
This story was fun and light hearted. It was a wonderful respite from reality. We can't wait to read the next one!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2018I know people review with a story line but get this.
A feel good novel that is unpredictable. Yes girl meets boy the is angst. But it's the flow of angst that keeps you hooked. You laugh, you are sympathetic, you get frustrated then you understand. The path to happiness is worked for.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2017I'm always surprised when I read Alora's books! The storylines are always so different from book to book that I never know what to expect (this is a good thing) and I always end up loving them!! This one is no exception! I can't wait to get book two!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2018This was a very good book. They really love each other. I'm not staying in no shootout for someone I wasn't deeply in love with. But thick and thin.

4.0 out of 5 stars I love Prescot!
I found this story compelling and I liked the characters Ki and Prescot. I loved reading from Prescot's POV. I think that Alora Kate has captured his truly unique thought process and it allows us to more clearly see why he hesitates and thinks through his answers before giving them. I also love that Ki is totally understanding from the beginning that Prescot dislikes speaking and she doesn't ever ask him to change.
This story is a nice paced wild ride and I can't wait to see what else is in store for these two. I would like to note that, although this story is in a series I didn't feel like the ending was in anyway a cliffhanger. It ends with a yearning for more but not crazy unanswered questions.
I hope you too enjoy A Beautiful Heartbreak.
