A Bitter Cup: A Dragon Cozy Mystery (Hill Country Mysteries Book 2) Kindle Edition
What are you supposed to do when the most hated rancher is poisoned in your cafe?
Find the culprit to give them a high five of course—only kidding.
I may own Aconite Cafe, but that doesn’t mean I put actual aconite in the cups.
Unfortunately, someone did, and it’s up to us baristas to clear our name.
Too bad just about everyone in town had a motive to off the old man.
With a fresh batch of beans out of the roaster, I’m ready to tackle the next case.
A Bitter Cup is the second book in the Hill Country Mysteries. A complete cozy mystery series set in the heart of Texas. Each novel is a clean, snarky mystery, with no romance, that doesn't always involve death.
★★★★★ Fast and Snarky "Cute fast read. Good characters and love Azure!!!"
★★★★★ Excellent Read! "This cozy mystery was easy to get lost in. I loved the characters and the dragons."
★★★★★ LOVED this book! "You quickly fall in love with the characters as they emerge and grow in the story! A++"

Verena DeLuca is a pen name for the life partner duo Sabetha Danes, and N.A.K. Baldron.
When we’re not homeschooling our artistic daughter, we spend our afternoons arguing the finer details of books. Failing that, we can be found walking the many nature trails around our home.
Marble Falls is an actual tourist destination an hour west of Austin, Texas, that we’re proud to call home. While Aconite Cafe isn’t an actual coffee shop, it is the name of our publishing company.
We love coffee nearly as much as Hailey, though we’ve been known to break the cardinal rule and drink tea. (Azure is based on our cat James, who’s just as snarky.)

- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2021So, I hadn't read any kind of cozy mystery prior to reading the first book of this series. I read through it quick and it was an excellent way to break up reading of a more serious series. Light hearted, fun, sassy and we'll written. Simply wonderful
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2024I like this series. The characters are quite colorful and the story itself is entertaining.
Azure is quite funny and adds a lot of humor to the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2022Coffee, snark, magic and mystery - what else do you need? A dragon? Got that too! Hailey is the owner of the Aconite Cafe and Azure’s protector. Azure is (you guessed it) a little blue dragon can turn himself into a fluffy black cat, or a Mexican bat to keep his existence secret. Between them, the snark flies! When a customer is poisoned in the cafe, Hailey and her friends want to get to the bottom of the case since the police are looking in the wrong direction. Book 2 definitely lives up to the bar set by book 1 - can’t wait to read the next one!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2021I highly recommend this fantastic book, and the series in which it is, to all readers who love paranormal mysteries. Enjoy!

- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2022As customers keep coming into the Cafe one of the regulars is poisoned. The mystery of who did it and why has many twists and having a pet dragon kibbutzing from the sidelines makes for great reading

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good cozy mystery read...
The second in a great cozy mystery series featuring a cat who is really a dragon and his protector.
Hailey, now manager of the coffee shop her Aunt founded, has become Azure's protector, after the untimely death of her Aunt. Apart from leading the tribe of dragons and their protectors in the area, they get involved in solving mysteries which occur in the town.
In this book, a regular, long standing customer of the coffee shop is poisoned whilst having a coffee with his friend and employee. They're are several suspects and between Hailey and her best friend Aubrey, they work to find out who it is.
A really good cozy mystery read, easily finished in a few hours. The books are all standalone mysteries but they are best read in order of publication to preserve continuity of the characters and series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cosy Murder Mystery
A regular at the cafe is poisoned just after 2 heated arguments, when Hailey (owner of the Aconite Coffee cafe) is interviewed she says why would she use poison that would be linked. Jess who works for Hailey asks her to investigate as her husband is one of the suspects. It turns out Charlie(The victim) who is poorly but still alive due to Haileys dragon( which can transform into a cat) has put a spell of protection over the cafe and those in it, has not been paying his bills. Without payment Jess’s husband and father in law will go bust. Also another regular says that Charlie also dried up the well on his land and he had to sell Charlie the farm very cheap. More is discovered that Charlie is not the nice guy everyone thinks, but who actually poisoned him.
