Given that I know very little about motorbikes or motorbike racing, I was worried this book would not be for me, but I was wrong. There is plenty of detail and explanation that even someone who knows nothing can enjoy the novel. I know I did! It is an intriguing idea that is put into words well.
The story starts with Joseph Turner having a nightmare about a previous crash that ended his racing career. Unlike in other stories, it’s not because he is physically unable to continue, it’s that the accident made him unsure of his ability in racing. It was nice seeing a different side of the trauma a sports related catastrophe can have on a person.
Due to a new co-worker, Joseph finds out that people online blame a rock on the track, not a lack of skill on Joseph’s part, and that helps get some of his confidence back. He debates getting back into racing, and then BAM – new bike, and then BAM – first race. I wish there had been more time and description given between him getting a new bike and his first race back. I would have liked to see some doubts when faced with having a bike of his own, and even some anxieties about entering his first race.
Most of the book takes place at this race, and is where the reader gets a lot of detailed descriptions of each race as they happen. I really enjoyed the time taken here; the races don’t feel rushed, and there are scenes between each race so the writing is not repetitive. It’s also at this race where we are introduced to another racer, Gary – who won the race Joseph crashed during.
Gary also has a crash that he describes how Joseph remembers his own crash happening, and together they realize it can’t be a coincidence, and decide to investigate. The man they suspect runs off, and the two chase after him. The chase takes them through a lot of different locations, and I was on the edge of my seat. I was so certain they would catch the man, but he ends up getting away. Luckily, Gary memorizes his license plate number. But instead of calling the police, they decide to find the man themselves. The two locate where the man bought the bike he was riding, and break into the office to get his information. I was so frustrated at this part! I just kept thinking to myself that they should be contacting some sort of authority. Even the marshals from the racetrack would have been a better idea than breaking and entering!
With the information of the rock-tosser, they decide to enter an upcoming race to trap him, and it works! There is another crash, and this time Joseph is able to track him down, and Gary stops him before he can escape. While the reasoning behind the man’s deeds came off as a little cliché, the story ends with everything wrapped up. The bad guy is getting into the trouble he deserves, and luckily no one has been injured too badly by his antics (the worst being a broken arm).
Things end on a positive note, as things are looking up for all of the characters involved! This book was really good overall, and I recommend it to anyone who likes a little mystery in their books!
