A Different Light (A Begin Again Novel Book 1) Kindle Edition
But when Bennett’s so-called buddies ditched him at a party in the woods where he was assaulted and left for dead, Bennett pulled through. The emotional scars rendered him too terrified to go back to school and face his “friends” or his attackers. With little choice, his family packed up and left town.
Ten years later—at the request of his mother—Bennett returned to the place he’d grown up and the home he’d once felt safe, to oversee the repairs before his childhood house was sold. The contractor? None other than Mac, the once annoying boy next door, who still lives there in the home his parents gifted him.
Being in such close proximity—working together every day, to repair the Coles’ family home—Bennett and Mac’s contentious relationship goes from bad to worse as their personalities continue to clash. But their heated exchanges may not be as antagonistic as they seem. And when new information is revealed, can the men begin to see each other in a different light?

About the author

Morningstar Ashley is a transplant from New York and now finds herself on the east coast of North Carolina. Armed with her imagination, wit, and trusty sidekicks in the form of her two crazy kids, two cuddly and crazy dogs, and too many to count cats, Morningstar spends her time reading the books she loves, crafting her own characters, and arguing the merits of hot chocolate over the bitter brew known as coffee. (Hot chocolate wins, FYI.)
Morningstar loves graphic design, so much so she returned to school for a degree and now owns her own design company creating cover art for indie authors all over the globe. She can while away hours on new designs, and perfection isn’t too much to hope for when it comes to her art. Her ideal career would be full-time artist and author, and so far, she hasn’t come up against anything to stop her on her journey.
After a lifetime of trying to get people to realize her first name wasn’t Ashley, Morningstar decided the best way to settle the debate was to put her name on a book cover.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2025Tender and oh so sweet!!!😘 Mac and Bennett sweep you into their bubble and fill you up. They don't let go. The distinctive dysfunction creates a vivid world and fully realized characters. You can't help but get drawn in to their particular form of the human condition. Mac is the sexy bad boy persona with surprises up his sleeves. While geeky Bennett can't get out of his way which has Mac all twisted up in knots.😁 Sexy and funny, I highly recommend this delicious romp!!!😏😋
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2017“Being with you is an adventure I wouldn’t miss for the world.”
And boy does this sweet Mac lead Bennett on quite the adventure. Bennett whose nickname “Princess” suits him quite well, as he is in fact one of the most high maintenance characters I have read about in a while. It takes someone with some wit, humor and honestly patience to become what Bennett in fact needs.
An adorable nerd with a fetish for sexy science boxers, this character while hard headed at times, is just so goofy adorable that you can’t help but just love him to death. I have been unable to locate these boxers on-line, so I think our Morningstar could make quite a side company creating these nerdy creations…because I need these in my life.
Morningstar manages to not only create two very likable characters but a couple with actually some heartbreaking history. It is not until Bennett sees Mac in “A Different Light” that he knows just what Mac is to him.
“You…saved me that night. You showed them where I was, you…you held my hand…I remember that. I can sometimes still feel that warmth wrapped around my hand. It's what kept me grounded that night. I felt like if I had let go, I would’ve died…You were my anchor that night, and every night after when I thought I was lost.”
Mac may not consider himself a hero…but he is to Bennett. And the cover image for our dear Mac, just perfectly portrays the beauty that is this character.
This book, like the author’s first, has some absolutely beautifully written sexy moments and it is the heart to heart moments where I believe this author is at her best. Passionate and thoughtful, these moments are just so touching. I do wish a few of them had been longer, developing the character’s history, issues and their ultimate connection even further. The body painting scene…good grief…after hundreds of M/M books (even some that from the cover imply body paint), it is not until this book that I have been able to see this scene in all its glory.
Like in “Letting Go”, Morningstar has a way of interjecting such real genuinely funny situations that have me laughing out loud. From the paper plate scene in “Letting Go” to the destruction of paper plates here, to the use of painter’s tape and even oven mittens…it is these moments that I love.
Overall, such a sweet story of finding comfort and home in the most unlikely of places. I eagerly await Jaden and Danny’s story as I fell in love with them almost instantly.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2017Part of me feels like giving three stars is being generous, but part of me feels that the story got a lot better once Bennett and Mac started acting like grownups. I identified with Mac because my parents treated me the same way as his did o him, but there were just so many things I didn't like, it was a wonder I finished it.
There were so many typos. I like to think I don't get as frustrated over that as most others that I see complaining about grammatical errors, but having to stop and reread sentences so that I can piece together what was meant to be said gets on my nerves when it happens more than a few times in a story.
Also, it seems the author thinks that going to a hardware store to pick out paint requires searching through aisles of different colors to find the right ones. That isn't how it works, and I found it difficult to take her seriously throughout the rest of the story.
It became harder to take her seriously when she said that there were 100 yards separating their houses. That's the length of a football field. I can only assume she meant feet but even that much distance I have a hard time believing in as Bennett can walk out his door and, from his driveway, Mac can casually ask him where he's going.
Bennett tells Mac that in the week that he's been back he's been living off pizza and Chinese food, and then a moment later he says it's the first time he's had Chinese food since being back.
At one point Bennett feels relieved after having apologized to Mac and I don't recall there being an apology. He says something like "I feel terrible, but you know, you did the same thing to me.", and that is not an apology. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I feel Mac deserved better.
Also, we never find out what happened to the attackers, and the only glimpse we get of him confronting his past is a few words exchanged with one of the guys he had thought was a friend. I kept expecting Bennett to learn that his attackers were out of jail now or something.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2017Morningstar Ashley is quickly becoming an auto-buy for me. Her latest novel, A Different Light, is a fantastic story. I’m a huge fan of the enemies-to-lovers genre and Mac and Bennett (aka Princess) are a great couple. The two have a very contentious relationship as teenagers and Bennett is forced to move away after a horrific event. Bennett returns home about 10 years later to help get his childhood home renovated for resale. Little does he know that his parents hired Mac as the contractor for repairs. From the first minute the two men reconnect, the sparks fly. What follows is a slow-burn love story as Mac and Bennett realize that the spark they had as teenagers is just as strong, if not stronger, as adults. It isn’t easy, but both men work to let go of the past so they can build a future together. The chemistry between them is off the charts and I loved seeing them build their relationship. They are surrounded by a great cast of supporting characters too and I’m hoping Bennett’s best friend, Jaden, gets his own story soon. I can’t recommend this book highly enough!

I really enjoyed reading about Mac and Bennett. The journey from enemies to lovers was traumatic in parts, but soul searching in others. Well worth the read and thoroughly recommended.
