Review

I have read other books by Ann Bennett and have given them all five stars because they are excellent. However, I just wish that I could add another star or two to the five that I have awarded A Daughter's Promise. It is a deeply moving account on all levels, from the relationships between the protagonists in each generation, to the horrifying details of life in the POW camp. I learnt so much from this fictional relating of actual events, for which I am very grateful. It has inspired me to find out more about the country.

An exceptional writer and an exceptional book. Five Stars - Amazon Reviewer

Another wonderful story in the Echoes of the Empire series. At times this was a difficult read - learning of the horrors of the Burmese camps. As always Ann Bennett portrays her characters with depth and humility. A great read. Five Stars - Amazon Reviewer

Ann Bennett is a British author of historical fiction. Her first book, Bamboo Heart: A Daughter's Quest, was inspired by researching her father's experience as a prisoner of war on the Thai-Burma Railway and by her own journey to uncover his story. It won the Asian Books Blog prize for fiction published in Asia in 2015, and was shortlisted for the best fiction title in the Singapore Book Awards 2016.

That initial inspiration led her to write more books about WWII in Southeast Asia - Bamboo Island: The Planter's Wife, A Daughter's Promise, Bamboo Road: The Homecoming, The Tea Planter's Club, The Amulet, and The Fortune Teller of Kathmandu. Along with The Lotus House, published in October 2024, they make up the Echoes of Empire Collection.

Ann is also the author of The Oriental Lake Collection - The Lake Pavilion and The Lake Palace, both set in British India during the 1930s and WWII, and The Lake Pagoda and The Lake Villa, set in French Indochina.

The Runaway Sisters, USA Today bestselling The Orphan House, The Child Without a Home and The Forgotten Children are set in Europe during the same era and are published by Bookouture. Her latest book, The Stolen Sisters, published on 29th November 2024 is the follow-up to The Orphan List (published by Bookouture in August this year) and is set in Poland and Germany during WWII.

A former lawyer, Ann is married with three grown up sons and a granddaughter and lives in Surrey, UK. For more details, please visit her website www.annbennettauthor

What an amazing story told from the standpoint of three women's lives, a grandmother, mother and daughter of the same family. The story is told, often in flashbacks during three different time periods in 1945, 1988 and 2015 as the most poignant periods of their lives unfold.

The descriptions of WWII Japanese prison camps in the Burmese jungle were the most striking. And the most gut-wrenching. I don't know how any person could have come out of the experience whole in mind and body let alone alive. Additionally, the descriptions of post-war Burma are very real including local culture, tradition, flavor, smell. And the interwoven romance with all the hope, want and desperation is very raw and realistic.

This is a definite five-star read! The political atmosphere is essential to the saga as each story takes shape during a journey to find answers and the need to explain how these women's lives were so connected by a daughter's promise to her dying father.

This is my first book of 2020 and a great start to the new year. It greatly affected me, and I highly recommend to readers of historical fiction and romance readers. No sappy romance stories here.....just great writing, and a journey I won't forget.

I love how Ann Bennett writes her stories! In this novel a man gets trapped by the Japanese in Burma during WWII. After the war he marries his nurse but the severity of his PTSD makes him unable to be with his wife. The wife, their daughter and a granddaughter all struggle to understand him which leads to a search for his war diary in Burma.

This story was different than what I have been reading. The emotion, background, the past, the secrets - it all combines for one great book. The character had a journey that was tough, emotional and it was felt by the authors words in the book. There are twists and turns with all the events that happen throughout the book. Great book for anyone who loves to read!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Burma/ Myanmar over three generations
Reviewed in Australia on May 29, 2023
I really enjoyed this book. Each generation of women in a family is affected by the history of Burma/ Myanmar. The time span begins in WW11 and the infamous Japanese POW camps in which starving men were forced to build a railway through heavily forested land. In 1988, the Burmese people revolted against the military government. Young people, especially students, were harshly treated and imprisoned or killed by the army. A young English woman visits Myanmar in current times to learn the secrets about her origins.
The author has done her research well, but it becomes background to the three women's stories and does not interfere with the flow of the narrative. I recommend you keep tissues close by but also recommend this excellent book.

Another excellent novel from the pen of Ann Bennett. I thought I may tire of similar novels set in the far east during WW2, but the author always approaches the subject from different angles and develops a unique story. This novel is one of her best, dealing with the horrors of war leaving a lasting effect on the lives of those directly involved. Marvelously told. I have now read all of Ann Bennett's novels and cannot wait for the next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Three women
Reviewed in Australia on October 7, 2020
A super read. I loved the way this poignant story was told by three generations of women reflecting the attitudes and politics of each period of history. I visited Myanmar several years ago and Ann Bennett's descriptions were so accurate. The historical aspects of this book were well researched too. Sadly the human species don't seem to learn much from history! We keep repeating mistakes.
