About the author

Elizabeth Bailey grew up in Africa with unconventional parents, where she loved reading and drama. On returning to England, she developed her career in acting, theatre directing and finally writing.
Elizabeth's latest venture is The Lady Fan Mystery series, published by Sapere Books. The novels feature amateur sleuth Lady Ottilia Fanshawe and a cast of family members including her husband and champion Lord Francis Fanshawe. She originally published Regency romances with Harlequin Mills & Boon and has many titles in her Brides by Chance Regency Adventures series, now also published by Sapere, as well as standalone Regency and Georgian romances.
Elizabeth also writes edgy women's fiction: Her dual time novel Fly The Wild Echoes, which deals with past lives, and For One More Tomorrow, where the ghost of the real Macbeth returns, protesting his villainous portrayal by Shakespeare. And she has published a romantic suspense novella, Silence of a Stranger.
Elizabeth lives in Sussex, England. She is still an inveterate reader with eclectic tastes and she spends her spare time helping other writers improve their craft.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2022This is a very short story but it contains a heartwarming tale that is complete in every way.
As the story begins, Clarice Ryde has applied for a teaching position in Bath. From the letter she received, she is confident that the position is hers. However, upon her arrival, she learns that she is being interviewed for the position along with several other applicants.
She has used her meager funds to travel to Bath, which she would not have done had she not been assured that she would have employment.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2022This is a very short story of a girl alone, a French emigré, an old wrong righted, a lesson to be learned and a happily ever after.

Note: This story was originally published in a 2015 multi-author collection called THE CHOCOLATE HOUSE - Regency Anthology... which is still available for sale at the time of this review and only $0.99 last I checked.
It's a very brief and clean romance about a genteel young lady fallen on hard times and the French chevalier who comes to her rescue at the moment she needs its the most.
Hmmm, I'm a little confused by all the great reviews to tell you the truth. This was an okay little tale that had a nice twist near the end but in no way, shape or form is it a five star one. I also liked Gervais a lot more than Clarice who seemed to let her pride get in the way of common sense at times.
As for the romance it was way too rushed to ever truly establish a connection between our couple who meet and supposedly fall in love in a matter of a few days at most. I also found the writing and dialogue very stiff and strange too. It just didn't seem to flow well and had the odd word thrown in every now and then.
Overall it wasn't terrible but it's also not something I'd ever recommend and I'm glad I found it for free. On a positive note though at least it wasn't real boring and it only took me about an hour to read. I'm not sure the author and I are a good fit though and doubt I'll pick up anymore of her books.
Length: The story itself ended at the 97% mark on page 36 and location 746.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2024What a sweet story! Clarise lost her family & fortune due to her fathers gambling, Gervaise due to the French revolution. They meet, fInd kindred spirits & wrongs are righted in a delightful twist of coincidence!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2024Story has a good premise but lacks background and depth. Ending is too abrupt. Almost like an outline that was not filled in. It needs more work.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2022A very short story but it left no questions or situations unfinished. It told of the meeting of our hero and heroine and concluded with a sweet and happy end
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2019Life has been difficult when she was left destitute with the death of her father followed by the death of her mother. Then came love.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sweet novella
This sweet novella features a down on her luck governess and a French immigrant in a chance meeting in a chocolate shop in Bath. An enjoyable, quick read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet
This is a very short story, perfect for bedtime. Chance encounters between Miss Ryde and Gervais in Bath lead to a reversal of Miss Ryde's dire straits.
