A KILLING PLACE IN THE SUN; An International Action Thriller from the author of LAST GASP and The Worshipper Trilogy. Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,202 ratings

"BOSCH-meets-BOND-meets-REACHER."

His 'Place In The Sun' may be just a house, but to this Englishman it’s his castle. And he wants it back.

It began as a property wrangle. It ended in all-out war.

Ex-soldier and policeman, Peter Murray, returns to the beautiful island of Cyprus to keep the vow he made to his late wife, Kathy, to complete the deal on the house that was their shared dream, before the tragic accident that claimed her and their son.

Murray’s hopes are shattered when he finds their home taken over by a ruthless Russian mobster, along with his family, and a small army of enforcers - and he has no intention of giving it up.

When Murray's attempts to negotiate, peacefully, fail in the face of the Russian's casual disregard for the law, what begins as a simple property dispute soon escalates, through threats, intimidation and violence, before exploding into all-out war.

Determined to keep his promise to Kathy, Murray must use all his police skills, experience and military know-how just to stay alive.

Finally, in a nail-biting climax, a daring, night time assault to reclaim the house brings a series of twists to all that has gone before. And as the new dawn casts its first shadows over what has become A Killing Place In The Sun, the shattering truth finally reveals itself. But who will be left alive to witness it? Buy today and find out.

Equal parts crime novel, heist thriller, and military adventure, and set against the backdrop of the popular holiday island resort of Pafos,
A Killing Place In The Sun recounts the struggle for supremacy between two determined adversaries, one as ruthless and dangerous as the other is principled and daring.

Robert F Barker was born in Liverpool, England. During a thirty-year police career, he worked in and around some of the North West’s grittiest towns and cities. As a senior detective, he led investigations into all kinds of major crime including, murder, armed robbery, serious sex crime and people/drug trafficking. Whilst commanding firearms and disorder incidents, he learned what it means to have to make life-and-death decisions in the heat of live operations. His stories are grounded in the reality of police work, but remain exciting, suspenseful, and with the sort of twists and turns that crime-thriller readers love.

Born in Liverpool, England, Robert F Barker served thirty years as a police officer and detective, most of it working in and around some of Northwest UK's grittiest towns and cities. He writes stories that are dark and edgy, but credible enough for the reader to believe they may be based on some sort of reality, which of course they sometimes are. (Names changed to protect the innocent.. etc.). During his service, he learned that no matter where people live, whatever their position in society, they are never far from places where darkness dwells. Those places may be inner city sink estates where drugs are dealt and violence rules, or leafy suburbs where neat gardens and lace curtains conceal the sort of evil that no one ever imagines - until the worst happens.

As a former Senior Investigating Officer and Firearms Incident Commander, he knows all about the pressures police officers face, as well as what it means to have to make life-and-death decisions in the heat of live operations. Given his background, his stories are as authentic a portrayal of crime and policing as can be found anywhere in today's crime fiction.

He splits his writing-time between his family home in Cheshire, UK, and the beautiful island of Cyprus, where he gains inspiration for a series of Cyprus-based thrillers which he intends will compliment his crime novels.

Mr. Barker knows how to tell a story. Characters with just the right blend of lethality and mystery, a plot that is both plausible and intriguing, action that is vivid while real and a pace that keeps interest alive.

Robert F. Barker’s novel, “A Killing Place in the Sun”, wasn’t just a technically well-written book; it was a good read. I don’t believe in reviewers giving a detailed synopsis of the book. I feel that it is the author’s job to get people to read the book, and it is the job of the reviewer to give an honest review. I do not like to give spoilers, so in a way, I cannot say all that I would like to about the world Mr. Barker created, except it is truly believable. As I said, this book was well-written. It was also well-edited and well-proofed, something you do not always find with Indie Authors. The story is fast-paced enough to keep the reader turning the pages. Though it did not need a lot of action to maintain interest, it has it in spades. It was not difficult to suspend disbelief in the island setting of Cyprus, so much so, I think I will travel there on vacation soon. The dialogue was credible and authentic. It was not stilted and was never forced or merely a foil of the plot. The characters were lifelike, many with quirks that increased their believability. They were complex, well-rounded, and well thought out. The twists and turns in the plot would make an F-1 driver envious.
Robert F. Barker has put together a well-written and entertaining read. A strong central character drives the story while the action and dialogue pull the story along, bringing the reader swiftly to the end.

I bought this book as I live in Cyprus and it had good reviews. Sorry, it just is not for me, seemed to go on and on, more about the Russian side of it than anything else. Maybe I was expecting Cyprus to be mentioned more. Sorry, but I gave up half way through.
