- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2023A lovely mystery, replete with misdirection, plot twists, and an abundance of clues that may or may not mean what the main character thinks. Although I had my suspicions about one character (mostly because I didn't like him) I was still surprised at the end. There's a nice little romance also, and two adorable children.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful read
Not what I expected and not my normal cup of tea, but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this medley of mixed up lives, halting romance and mysterious brain teasing puzzles.
At first I found the scene setting with back and forth dialogue, seeming to make no progress, a little frustrating but it was a different type of book for me and, after a while, I enjoyed the banter, the realistic nagging doubts when a new acquaintance is made, with romantic overtones.
The struggle of Amelia Watson to balance her work life, as a deputy manager of a large Falmouth, Cornwall, hotel, with maintaining good relations with friends, family and her shared dog, was warmly engaging; it was life.
It is hard for me to describe the plot without spoilers except to say that Amelia has a detective’s brain, an ability to solve mysteries, and she is soon faced with a plethora of these, some of them ‘real’ and not played out games and, not least of these, is her new love playing fast and loose with her?
Not my usual fare, but still a delightful read – 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Castles, crime and caramel
Amelia seems to be a fairly self-assured duty manager at The Fal View Hotel. She initially looks forward to promotion. She does tend, however, to lack some confidence. One thing she does think she does well is investigating crimes. That's where we see her first, organizing a murder mystery weekend.
Here, she meets Patrick - a bit of a dish. We follow her from here, meeting her best friend and navigating her way through a somewhat distant relationship she has with her parents.
There is a substantial amount of caramel and cake involved. Shame it wasn't a scratch'n'taste!
A lovely read, gentle but not afraid to confront some difficult areas, all wrapped up with a goodly dose of humour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing mystery and brilliant characters
It all starts at a murder mystery weekend where Amelia meets Patrick. She hears about a disappearance elsewhere and can't resist putting her amateur detective skills to the test.
The mystery keeps you thinking, I had a few view theories and although one turned out to be accurate I was never quite certain.
You get a great sense of place in this novel, when Amelia goes to Lee-On-The-Solent I felt like I was right there and it made me think of my past holidays.
I love the characters, they all stand out and the relationships between the characters too. They seem like real people that I'd love to read more about.
