Competed series!!! - 6 books, 900,000 words

In the apocalypse, the first weapon he’ll have to upgrade is himself.

The end of the world as we know it couldn’t come at a worse time for Adrian.

One minute, he’s an operations manager who’s overseeing a construction job in the wilderness. The next, an unknown energy force changes the very nature of life itself, from the smallest organism to the top of the food chain. The earth’s surviving inhabitants, its environment, and the very laws of physics have all undergone fundamental transformations.

Many of those changes aren’t pretty. Plenty of them are deadly.

Luckily for Earth, this has happened to other species before, and everyone receives an interface that survivors of similar events have used to navigate through an alien landscape.

Adrian’s going to need every advantage he can get. He’s stranded in the middle of nowhere, there are days, maybe weeks of travel between him and his family, and in a world full of monsters and mayhem, survival means beating the learning curve…

Alex first fell in love with both computer games and writing when he was on a scholarship completing a Bachelor of Science majoring in Physics. After graduating and getting a job writing was put to the side while that pesky thing called life got in the way.

A career in banking delivering complicated quantitative banking applications resulted. Very stereotypical;

Boring job as a banker - tick,

Suburban home - tick

Three kids - tick

Two dogs - tick

You get the point.

A little thing called a global pandemic then came along and gave Alex a chance to return to his dream of becoming a writer. Having recently read a variety of LITRPG books it was a genre that Alex was excited to explore in order to create a world that readers could immerse themselves into. With the familiarity of the gaming world gained from playing WOW, Skyrim, Fallout amongst others there is simple joy in creating an imaginative magic filled world that is at everyone’s fingertips. In his writing Alex aims to capture the feeling that he loves of being able to put yourself into a gaming world, develop your character and exploit the rules to the fullest.

The book is pretty good overall. The premise and execution of the magic system is done well. I dont mind the two tier system. The story progression is pretty good.

Here is what I do mind. The MC is supposed to be a project manager. He in no way ever manages the project of the apocalypse. EG there is no plan, no execution on the plan and no updating the plan as you learn more. The book would make much more sense if he was a maintenance worker.

Moving on the fight scenes are in extreme detail. If that is your thing, you will probably like it. I am more tell be about the fight but in no way tell me blow by blow, and the thought process about the blows.

Probably the most problematic thing for me is the constant whining but the MC. Oh I miss my family. Oh I can't kill baby (name your monster). It is a significant part of the dialog and does not end. It would be fine if the author cut it way back. As is I skim past a lot to get to scenes with planning and progression.

It was a wonderful read. The world building is multilayered and creative, the story is well paced, and the main character interesting. I truly enjoyed it and hope you will too.

The world forces itself into an apocalyptic event and magic comes to the rescue. The laws of nature have been rewritten. A man on the far side of the country at the time starts the long trek home in hopes that his family survived. He gains unique skills, defeats awful creatures and then aids a community in defeating a raid boss before reaping the rewards. He isn’t home yet, but his feet are firmly on the path.

While not every detail is beyond scrutiny, the book is written in such a way that the events and thought processes of the characters are believable and reasonable. There's plausible explanations for why the world now works under these new rules, and why the things within it work the way that they do. The main character that we can see the thoughts of isn't some unstoppable force of will that charges through all threats, but has realistic motivations and a force driving him to improve. The effects of each action is considered for consequences lasting longer than just the next few pages, and all in all it's an enjoyable read.

I grabbed this up because it was one of Audibles daily deals and a litRPG to boot. Not because I knew anything about the book or even what Wagga was, I thought that might be a monster. 😆
I found the beginning a bit, of a slow burn and I even had some problems figuring the complexity of the new system. A system that in an eyeblink had taken over the world in this apocalyptic adventure. But I stuck with it and caught on. As the systems AI finely started being helpful, all the while fervently insisting that he wasn't sentient.
I loved Adrian the site manager for a solar company, was at a job in Wagga when the world went topsy-turvy. His goal was to get home to his family in Melbourne and make sure that they were safe. But he felt responsible to his co-workers. The crew he helped hire. His rules were few, rule 1 safety first, rule 2 keep them safe, rule 3 make them stronger . Which turned out to be a really big job, even bigger when a Roc had been added to the equation.
So grab the book and enjoy listening to Grant Cartwright narrate this fun litRPG.

Real good freshman attempt. I enjoyed the concept and the mechanics of the universe the author is creating. The character is flawed but relatable in a lot of ways. I love the fact that the author did not go down the horrible path a lot of this genre does where the character creates a stable of one dimensional women.

The book could use some help to get from good to great. At times the pace of the story kind of slows and some of the scenes where not needed. The main characters could stand to be a little more developed and not so cardboard ish.

In all very much worth the read and I look forward to reading more from this author.

This was a very good read. Fans of the System Apocalypse style of books will really enjoy it. A strong main character that is more relatable than most because of his reservations. The book appears to have been edited, but there are still some typos and errors. Nothing serious, but if you are hyper sensitive to those types of things you will notice them.

This book feels RPG light. It works with the story and is enough to put it firmly in the genre, but if you are stat hungry or prefer more descriptions of how powerful the Protagonist is growing versus the masses it is a little harder to quantify. On the other side of that equation, the Author is tracking the growth of the average baseline of humanity and including that information for us.

Solid book waiting eagerly for the next installment.

If you love Australia and LitRPG then this is your book!
I thoroughly enjoyed Alpha Physics. The beginning is a bit slow with the character alone in the wild fighting imps but once the reader gets past this the story proceeds with a fast pace and offers some really original ideas.
First of all, I love that the story is set in Australia. It gives everything a unique charm. And it also shows how different Australians are from the rest of the world. While everywhere else the apocalypse would lead to chaos and anarchy, the Australians work together and help each other out. I think that's a unique perspective and makes the social dynamic in the book very interesting. Besides, the author came up with some really interesting monsters, such as killer slugs and a bird of the size of a jet.
I wouldn't recommend this book to readers new to LitRPG because it has a lot of stats and is, therefore "crunchy" but genre fans will surely love exactly that.
I'm curious how Adrian's journey continues and one thing I know for sure: if the apocalypse should occur, I want to be in Australia ;)

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing take
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 21, 2022
An enjoyable read - I've downloaded and started the next one! Though not a page-turner to the extent that I couldn't go to sleep for needing to know what was going to happen next, it has definitely been fun to read. The best point about this book, I think, is that it is slightly different from others I've read in this genre for three main reasons.

First, it's set in Australia. Reading a post-apocalyptic gamelit story which takes place somewhere other than the US is definitely refreshing and, for me, added an immediate bit of interest.

Second, the interface (the way the character interacts with the System) is intriguingly different from other books I've read. Neither a clear separate individual being (like a dungeon fairy) or simply a technological structure enabling the character to see their stats, the interface in this book has clearly been thought through carefully. I'm curious to see whether the hints about sentient/sapient are going to lead anywhere...

Third, the character is married with a family who he desperately wants to get back to. Most of the books I've read in this genre either have a MC who is single or who loses his family in the first parts of the book. While I can understand authors' desires for a 'clean slate', as it were, the desperation of the character in this book to find his family, along with the very human fears of what might have happened to them, add a bit of originality for me. To be noted here is the fact that the MC is far from perfect, and, apart from the luck which he seems to have been blessed with, has somewhat more realistic characterisation than others I've read (Dave Willmarth's Shadow Sun series is one of my favourites, but no one can argue that Alastair is realistic...)

In short, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

I like it. Adrian was a nice person to read about. Reading his raw feelings over trying to survive in a new and completely messed up world was pretty intense and satisfying.

The balance between moments if incredible action sequences and heart to heart conversations was great.

This author set up a pretty exciting world and system.

    To book 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ein Erstlingswerk, das wenig „Erstling“ und viel „Werk“ enthält!
Reviewed in Germany on July 9, 2021
