A Mother's Past: A jaw-dropping page-turner with mind-blowing twists & turns (The Secrets of Suburbia Book 4) Kindle Edition
Child psychologist Dr. Karen Marks relates well with her young clients when it comes to loss. After all, she’s no stranger to painful life experiences. Despite the adversities she’s weathered, Karen works hard to serve Chicago’s troubled youth. But maintaining the perfect façade becomes impossible when the past crawls from the woodwork and threatens the life she’s worked so hard to create.
First come the allegations from former students against her deceased husband. As the vicious and unfounded news goes public, Karen’s counseling schedule dries up overnight and she can’t help but feel like she’s being watched. But then a new client walks into her office—his appearance so like her missing son’s, that for a moment she thinks her wishes and prayers have finally been answered. But it can’t be… it’s been so long since he disappeared and this angry, violent child behaves nothing like her Luke. Yet, the resemblance is uncanny.
Now Karen’s life is turned upside down as decades of unresolved issues overwhelm her, and seemingly unconnected events begin to reveal someone with sinister intentions. As threats mount, Karen must race to uncover a twisted plot that pits past guilt against any hope for the future.
And the truth? It was better left buried.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2019Really enjoyed this thriller also. Looking forward to more by this author. I would have finished it much faster, but had a family emergency. This was a great page turner of an awesome read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2021Another installment in the suburbia series. I really like the authors writing style but for some reason this book just didn’t resonate with me. Professionally, Dr. Karen’s lack of boundaries and her justification for 8 years of therapy disheartening. If I haven’t helped someone in any measurable way within 6 months then I refer them to a therapist or therapists that might be a better fit for whatever reason.
Personally, While I understood her self-flagellation following her sons’ death, I too lost my son at 18 as we were all sleeping. So I get the constant questioning of yourself and your behavior wondering how you might have changed something. After my son’s death, his sister and brother were left with a cardboard cut-out for a Mom, so I can understand how you miss small changes in temperament, but I know after about 7 months my focus was back on my remaining children constantly vigilant.
The end was definitely well thought out and executed flawlessly until it wasn’t...
on to the next...

- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2019Dr. Karen Marks is a child psychologist in Chicago who has had quite a troubled life...raped in high school, became pregnant due to the rape, gave birth to a child that she immediately gave up for adoption, then went on to college. Karen got married and had twins, a boy and a girl, but she never forgot the first child that she gave up...her marriage became more of a friendship...she thought her husband was gay, so she justified her affair...but one day when she was with her lover, her son was killed in a car accident...a few years later her husband died of cancer...
Fast forward a few years from her husband's death, and we have someone paying off a couple of "hookers" who attended the school where her husband taught phys ed to say that he had inappropriate relations with them while they were students. The negative publicity from this starts to affect Karen's client list...parents stop bringing their children to her...how could she have not known what her husband was doing?
One day into her office walks a young man with a remarkable resemblance to the son she lost...could it be...is this her grandson? Karen meets his mother, and sees a great resemblance to the man who raped her...and decides to tell her that she believes that she is her mother...
As Karen strive to get to know her long lost daughter, things get stranger and stranger...
Don't want to give anything away, but I will say that I was totally surprised by the ending...a real page turner!!
