Apathy (Secrets of Winworth Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 243 ratings

There were sicknesses in this world even holy water couldn't wash away.

In vicious nights, beautiful monsters lay.
Some with faces known, some ready to play.
Unsure of a friend, unsure of a foe,
Be certain of nothing you think you know,

Because what once enters Winworth,

never leaves again.

Skylar Blackwood thought she knew what monsters looked like.
But in Winworth, nothing is what it seems.

Not the arrival of a stranger with eyes that see too much, and lips that taste like danger.
Not the young women who begin disappearing in the night.
And certainly not the people in the sleepy town she grew up in that begin to turn on one another.

One truth is undeniable, something wicked is loose in Winworth.
No one is safe, and trusting the wrong person could cost Skylar everything.

Trapped between the two worlds as secrets start to unravel, what little sanity Skylar has left threatens to shatter, leaving her with more questions than answers.

Turns out, real monsters are never what they seem.

APATHY is the first book in Secrets of Winworth series, dealing with dark themes that might not be suitable for all readers. It is recommended only for readers above the age of 18.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

L.K. Reid is a dark romance author who dislikes slow walkers and people being mean for no reason.

In her opinion, Halloween should be a public holiday, and she also has a small obsession with all things historical—especially Greek mythology. During high school, she wanted to be an archaeologist, and ended up studying law, but obviously neither one of those professions worked out.

If she isn’t writing, she’s most probably watching horror movies, listening to music, reading, or plotting upcoming books.

tragically beautiful.
this is my book introduction to l.k. reid and it was intensely alluring. this book was dark, depraved, emotional, complex, and just tragically beautiful. it’s filled with monsters that hide behind beautiful faces, secrets, lies, and mysteries that wrap around the towns secret society/ cult. sky, she has my heart. i have felt so deeply with her throughout this book. i was able to relate in so many ways. and they way lk was able to put into words what people go through when it comes to mental illness. & the thoughts that threaten to consume you and drag you down… and no matter how much you want to talk to someone about it, you’re unable to. and it fucken sucks. . . . despite the undeniable chemistry and pull the mc’s have towards each other, will they be able to stay together and face all the darkness and pain that is inevitable? — from beginning to that mind blowing end, this story consumed me. left me with so much questions that i desperately need answered… but i’ll wait patiently for book two of the series. 🥴😭

But the thing with darkness, the thing with pain, was that once you got used to it, you didn't want to let it go.

It’s taken me a while to form the right words for this review, and honestly I don’t even know if I’m going to do it justice. LK Reid once again wrote a story that just completely blew my mind. Right from the start, you’re sucked into a world full of mystery, suspense, and foreboding. The small town of Winworth is dark and filled with secrets and pain and grief. It’s a heavy place.

Our two main characters are Skylar and Ash. I fell in love with both tremendously. Both characters are fighting and struggling internally, and with that, they can’t help but be drawn to one another. But, Skylar is the one person who Ash shouldn’t be drawn to, as he’s come back for redemption for his family, and she’s the one girl who could mess everything up for him. I love that these two find solace in one another, especially for Skylar. These characters have gone through hell and back, and your heart bleeds for them for wanting them to find peace and happiness.

My god. I knew I was gonna love this story, but I didn’t know Apathy was gonna be a top ten 2021 read. Y’all, I’ve already read it twice! This book has some of the best world building and had me at the edge of my seat the whole time. There hasn’t been a book I’ve read in a while where I was anxious the whole time while reading. The way the dangers of this book are set up, the secret societies, the disappearances and everything in between, had me turning page after page without stopping. There’s a whole lot of hurt in this book. A whole lot of ways that that hurt is being dealt with. It’s heartbreaking and emotional, because it's so real and raw. That’s why the chemistry between Ash and Skylar is so beautiful to me. While they may not know everything, they feel it.

If you can't handle cliffhangers, I’d suggest waiting, but my god, do I think it’s worth it. That ending still has me spinning and screaming and everything I thought that was shady was right but I still can't get over it. Book 2 can't come soon enough!

    Possible spoilers.

Another awesome story from LK Reid. She definitely has a talent for dark romance. I pretty much always one click when it comes to her books. I initially wrote my first review of Apathy right after finishing the book a few days after release date but I did it through the pop up screen at the end of the book on the KU app and it never posted, so I won’t be doing that ever again. Now I’m gonna try to recall my first review the best I can.

I loved the plot of the story. I loved the push and pull between Skylar and Ash and how hot it was when they finally gave into their attraction. However I do wish we got more POV from Ash. I love reading from the hero’s POV so I hope there’s more from him in Temptation. Some parts of the story were a little slow but the plot and characters kept me reading and I enjoyed the story. Dylan’s behavior got my hackles up and rose my suspicion level to like a 7. I just had a feeling we were gonna find out something crazy when it came to him. I did predict he was more involved in his father’s darker side than Skylar knew, no matter how good she thought her brother was. The scene with her and Dylan in her bedroom pretty much confirmed my suspicions about him and I knew we were gonna get a crazy cliffy which we definitely did. Let’s hope Ash makes it to Skylar in time. I can’t wait to find out what happens!

So I can’t remember if this was supposed to be dark romance or not; but I would definitely say it’s more of a psychological thriller. I didn’t read the trigger warnings as I usually find out what I need to know by the reviews. I will give it to the author on waiting until 50% to reveal certain “secrets” as I would have quit as soon as it was revealed if I wasn’t so invested in the mystery. Even then I almost stopped and looked for spoilers as I really didn’t want to keep reading after that. At this point I had to look at the book like a thriller and not a romance just push through.

The youth of the characters were also a big turn off for me in this book as it made the “romance” super cringy. Not to mention the actions of the FMC were so frustrating, but somewhat expected given her age (hence the reason I don’t like young FMCs).

I’m glad I stuck with the book as I had a suspicion there was more to be revealed and I was correct. I’m honestly hoping the next book gives the FMC a break and hopefully some revenge;I just don’t know if I can keep reading about this poor girls life without and vindication soon.

This book would have been better if the characters were older and the FMC was at least 20 awaiting her 21st birthday.

A good first book in this duet. Tension filled, suspenseful, with an intriguing and compelling world building. I liked the atmosphere and the heroine's despair.

The ending had me screaming, and I'm diving into the second book right away.

LK Reid is a new author to me. Her storytelling is captivating.

I love the writing style of Reid, I think it has a quality that pulls you into the story, it absolutely enraptured me. I thought the complexity to the characters and the book were very well handled, as dark topics are the focus of this book. Overall I absolutely loved Apathy and I highly recommend it to others.

Apathy is a mind blowing! The intensity, the deepness, the darkness, the depravity is mind blowing to say the least.

Skylar, the FMC, is a captivating portrayal of survival through numbing pain. Her journey, fraught with substances and hidden anguish, unfolds amidst a backdrop of intense emotions and profound darkness.

The intensity, the deepness, the darkness, the depravity is mind blowing to say the least.

The plot is relentless, with every character and motive questioned. You have no idea who is trust worthy and who isn’t. The relationship between Skylar and Ash is all consuming, weaving trust and betrayal into a story that keeps you on edge.

I never saw it coming at the end, and it left me craving more.

Apathy is a riveting exploration of resilience and redemption, marked by unexpected twists and a haunting cliffhanger that literally leaves you hanging
