Invoking Infinity (Archivist Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 973 ratings

Not all dragons breathe fire and horde treasure, some have a real thing for artifacts, rare books, and magical creatures.

I’d given myself and Sisu twelve days to get settled into our new life before tackling my first official day as the head archivist of the magical archives at the National Museum of Ireland.

Our new kitchen was under construction, with the electrical and plumbing upgrades in the main rooms of the estate well on the way. I knew how and where to buy groceries, and had arranged a tutor for Sisu.

Totally under control.
Perfectly planned and executed, my to-do list had held strong through our transition into living among the Adepts of Dublin. With our secret identities firmly in place.

And then someone started releasing magical artifacts into the city, wreaking havoc on the witches and the werewolves. With me stuck in the middle, trying to sort it out with as few fatalities as possible. All while neutralizing the misused artifacts in question.

Thankfully, I was a quick learner.

And pretty damn indestructible.

Though the guardian dragons weren’t going to be pleased by a few of my more creative choices when it came to the care and keeping of magical … well, magical anything. But that was my job.

Even, as some might say, my vocation.

I was the Archivist of the Modern World, after all.

Invoking Infinity is the first novel in the Archivist series, which is set in the same universe as the Dowser, Oracle, Reconstructionist, Amplifier, and Misfits of the Adept Universe series. While it is not necessary to read all the series, in order to avoid spoilers the ideal reading order of the Adept Universe begins with Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic (Dowser 1).

Reading order of the Archivist Series:
• Awakening Infinity (Archivist 0)

I of course and always am a fan. The writing style is always entrancing and the character building never boring. This is a new line of stories and characters that tie into the beloved Dowserverse. Dusk is everything we love about the lead character. If you're a fan and on the mailing list and social media you got a special sneak peek of her and Sisu before. This book is a real treat. I wanted more and more. Can't wait for the next one. Briefly Dusk and her 5y.o. brother are made an offer they can't resist. It comes with an ESTATE, a new job, a new country even. With everything that goes into a life changing move throw in a missing mother, magic, haters, and a handsome contracter (really who can resist a sweaty man with a tool belt) plus a old flame and intrigue. Lots of fun and adventure ....if you like puzzles dusty mysteries and smarmy vamps. Must read!

I have read the other books in the Adept world by Meghan Doidge, getting hooked by her Dowser series. Her more recent series (Amplifier, Misfits, and Archivist) are even better than her first in this world (Dowser, Oracle, Reconstructionist) if that can be believed. You don’t have to have read the other books to start this series but reading the prequel to this does give a good intro into the characters and world (though still not required to enjoy this). The main character, Dusk, is super likeable, and I enjoy that there is a younger brother character that she’s raising so there’s this added pressure on her in addition to the new job/spy mission for the guardians. There’s also a magical house with a gnome so what’s not to like. It’s funny (Dusk figuring out the modern world) and heartwarming (value of all life) and there’s a set up for some romance in the future. The book doesn’t end on a cliffhanger but does leave some interesting puzzles that make you want to learn more about the characters and their backstories in future books. Can’t wait for the next one!

I love most books by this author and this was a great book. I felt like you didn’t need to read her other books to understand what was going on, but it does help flesh out some fun facts. I love how she portrays her female leads: they are never weak, but never obnoxious or irritating, just strong in who they are. I loved that the author branched into a different country and their myths instead of keeping it in the PNW and Canada as with the majority of her series. He characters are strong and well fleshed out and she writes with humor and grace. I was at 62% late last night and then suddenly at 93% somehow in the morning!

The way this story and the characters evolve you feel and quickly immerse yourself into the world of Dusk and her brother Sisu. Each character uniquely builds and shows a new side that helps drive the story to a climax that keeps you running with Dusk and want the story to keep going. I love the parallel to the other adept story lines that weave in the godfreys and dragons enough to not overshadow Dusk and SIsu’s story. I am a huge Dowser fan and yet every-time Meghan Ciana Doidge lures me with new characters and new adepts that I love just as much.

I have to admit that I was a little hesitant to start this book after struggling with the prequel (book 0). The Dusk we get in this book, however, is AWESOME. She might be my new favorite character, with so much room to grow!

So, if you read book 0, you already know the deal with Dusk & Sisu coming to Dublin to pretend to be witches (not dragons), manage the archive, and essentially spy on the other adepts for the guardians. While we get a brief cameo from Pearl, that's all the connection we get here and the book really doesn't need more. Dusk is a powerhouse and shows us from her first day at work how things are going to change. I love watching her grown and develop at an alarming rate, along with all her magical friends and finds.

Sisu is also a highlight in this book, which is a high praise from me about a kid character. He is adorable and leaves me with a smile on my face after each passage he's in. Have they been through some stuff? Sure - but the way they are handling it is amazing. Last but not least is Kellan, where there are some serious slow burn vibes, but no smutty goodness. I have high hopes that something will happen here, but we shall see. The complicated political drama of shifters, witches, and (secret) dragons is somehow not too much when coupled with the story of this archivist. I can't wait to see what Dusk gets up to now that she's survived her first week of work and managed to keep her assignment.

I have a tendency to devour MCDs books. I tear through them because they are so darn good that I can't help myself. This time started out no differently, but thanks to my kids who wouldn't stop interrupting, I ended up reading this slowly over the course of a few days, savoring every wonderful page, sentence, and word choice. I even found myself rereading sections (again, thanks for interrupting, kids!) which caused me to notice things I probably would have missed if reading faster. I loved the prequel book and this one was even better because we get to see the characters' personalities develop even more. Dusk is a serious contender for my new favorite MCD heroine. I know, I know, how can you top Jade, but if anyone can, it's Dusk! I can't recommend this book enough and to quote my five year old son, who is very much a Sisu type of personality, I give it 50 thumbs up in 75 rows!

Another Meghan Ciana Doidge book I burned through because it was just too good to put down! Dusk is the new archivist of magical artifacts in Dublin. She is having a really rough first week on the job. Artifacts are in the wrong hands and wreaking havoc. Can’t wait to read more of this series!

Meghan Ciana Doidge is a masterful storyteller skilled at creating worlds, strong female leads, well-defined characters you come to root for and love, and engaging storylines. Love and recommend all her Adept Universe books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh my. I need more Dusk & Sisu!!
Reviewed in Canada on August 5, 2021
Meghan Ciana Doidge's books are always stellar. I've read each and every one of her spectacular books. But I must say, this one, "Invoking Infinity", is by far the best book she's ever written. It is a masterpiece. That's saying a lot since every other book that came before this one was easily a five star extravaganza for the senses. I found myself in need of a co-conspirator/associate to share text with. It was unfair of me but I couldn't help myself from mumbling text out loud. It was ass though my lips and vocal cords were possessed. I had an overwhelming need to share the brilliant prose in this book as I read it. Meghan's world building is nothing short of genius. It's also dazzling, intense, scintillating and just plain bad ass. Thank you for making reading one of the most wonderful parts of my mundane day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging characters and a plot that leaves you unable to put the book down

This is the start of a new series set in the Adept universe (all of which I've read and loved), and I think it just might be my favourite so far.
Love urban fantasy, but what draws me to a particular author is the ability to create characters with depth and interest - which Meghan does in spades. I know that whenever I pick up one of her books, it's like immersing myself in a world of friends, where I can completely get lost.
The world which has been created in the Adept series is colourful, full of intrigue and mystery, humour, one where you can fully immerse yourself.
The only negative - I whizz through the book so fast as I can't put them down, I'm always eagerly awaiting the next one! (luckily if you sign up to Meghans newsletter you get extra little novellas to keep you going!)

I loved this book. Dusk is a fantastic heroine: flawed & brave. The relationships developing in this story make you happy. Friendships & potential romance blooming between the adults but also with the children and magical creatures.
The perfect amount of action to get your heart racing.
I recommend taking a ‘me day’ to stay home and read this book.
    Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beware - Active Magic
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 13, 2021
I read “Awakening Infinity” and ordered “Invoking Infinity” straight away. Once again, the power of the Magic that is in the words used by Meghan Ciana Doidge are utterly captivating and time stealing. Leaving aside the hinted romance between two beings the escapades of Dusk and her little brother Sisu are so entertaining that book three of this loveable saga cannot come quick enough. My wish is that this series was old and established so that I could read it all without having to wait for the next one in the series. Unfortunately waiting is a magic that is hard to master or control. Until the next episode happy reading.
