3 Question Interview with Linda Bloodworth

Q1. Linda, what genre do you write?

A1. Currently, I write YA (young adult) Paranormal mixed with fantasy. Seeing as my characters include a half-angel, a witch, a vampire, elves, and a dragon I'd say that's about right.

Q2. This isn't another Twilight rip off, is it?

A2. Heck no. My main character Justice is nothing like Bella Swan. Justice has a very clear idea of who she is and she doesn't rely on other characters to define her. Instead, she's independent, fiercely loyal, and can stand on her own two feet.

Q3. Why should anyone pick up A Raven's Touch?

A3. If you like adventure, friendship, action, and a bit of romance this is the book for you.

Multi genre book
I ventured outside my usual reading genre. I liked the author’s facebook page and her description of the book as being multi-genre, horror-adventure-paranormal. I am so glad I took this literary detour as it led me to a new, exciting and enjoyable road. The book immediately hooked me by having characters that I was invested in, a plot that captivated my attention and a satisfying ending that left room for a sequel.

A Raven’s Touch is author Linda Bloodworth’s debut novel into the world of paranormal/fantasy… a world filled with gods and demons, fairies and elves, dragons and wolves, witches and humans.

    And vampires.

A world where if good is to triumph over evil…. ‘good’ is going to have to get a little ‘bad’.

I am a relatively new reader to the world of paranormal. It is not a genre I usually indulge in, preferring bullets, bad guys and broads to otherworld creatures and magic. In fact, A Raven’s Touch is only the third book I have read in this undeniably fascinating genre. This is a testament to the author, who has crafted a story both brave and compelling, fast-paced and well thought-out. An ambitious story quite remarkable in the world of debut novels today where few rise to the calibre of A Raven’s Touch in originality, creativity, strong plot and engaging characters.

High school teen Justice St. Michaels has a problem. And it isn’t the school bullies she endures on a daily basis. No, Justice’s problem is not going to be solved by the principal of her high school meting out suspensions to the bullies. Fortunately, Justice has a circle of friends, her best friend Moira among them, looking out for her. Friends who are, unbeknownst to her, witches, elves and Halflings.

Which is good because things are about to go… what’s that English expression?... pear-shaped in Fallingbrook and cops, counselors, and clergy are not going to be of much help. It is going to take some ‘supernatural’… some ‘otherworldly’… powers to slay the demons and keep Hell where it belongs, deep in the bowels of Earth.

There’s something about Justice herself that lies at the root of her ‘problem’, something her parents, for their own reasons, have not told Justice about yet.

    Her birthright.

Justice, it seems, has ‘abilities’. For some time Justice has felt that there was something different about her… something not right. And now she’s having dreams… nightmares might be a better word… and she is ‘changing’.

And as if life weren’t complicated enough for a teenage girl, enter stage right a stranger… a man both charming and dangerous. But then, isn’t that always the way with their ‘kind’?

Oh, and did I mention a jealous demon? Or is it demoness? You know what they say… “Hell hath no fury as a scorned woman.”

And with that, I should stop. I really, really hate spoilers.

I thoroughly enjoyed A Raven’s Touch. It has a solid plot that does not get mired in unnecessary subplots. There is a good level of suspense… I liked the ‘slow reveal’ of some of the characters and of Justice’s ‘secret’ as well. The pacing of the story was quite nice, with well written and engaging characters; the character of Darien Raventhorn was especially well done. I thought the moodiness of Justice was just right, a touch of teen angst to make the character believable but not so much that you really just want to reach out and slap the girl. And what I think really helps bring the story together… the thread of theology throughout the book. The element of theology helps to round out the story and it showcases the main character’s inner strength.

All of this points to a writer who knows her craft as well as her audience. I am quite looking forward to the next book in the series. That says a lot, coming from a girl who reads, writes, and bleeds noir.

Good job, Linda… Brava! Now get busy on Book Two. You kind of left us on a ledge here, girl!

This is the debut novel for Linda Bloodworth and she did it up right . There are angels, demons . witches . fairies not to mention a dragon or two. Let me introduce to Justice and her best friend Morai . All they want to do is finish high school with out getting bullied anymore and start a new life away from Fallingbrook. But there is more to both Justice and Mora, and that one fateful day will change their lives forever. They find their real identities and now the war has started and they need to embrace their birth rights and save the world.

I loved the characters in the book. Justice is a sweet everyday girl who just wants to finish high school. You can't help but fall in love with her , the things she goes through would kill most people but she is stronger then most. As she comes to terms with happened to her parents . She has to handle the evil that is coming You see her struggling to come to terms with everything . Mora is her best friend and my favorite character , she is feisty and straight forward . She is one kick ass little witch that is shy in one way but kick ass the next . The rest of the characters are very well written and are all there to help keep Justice safe and secure . Darien Raventhorn is a very mysterious character . He is a vampire and is drawn to Justice . You don't know if he is actually good or bad. Training her for the epic battle between good and evil .

I really liked this book , I got it and couldn't put it down . The story will suck you in cause you want to find out what Justice is and who is Darien Raventhorn, a vampire that is drawn to her. The story takes you on a ride from the very first page . Trust me you will shed a tear and have so many omg moments . You will want to throw you kindles but I suggest you don't , kindles are expensive.

There are twists and turns and you will love the feel of the book its builds and builds . The characters slowly reveal themselves to us . You will not get bored reading this book . If you want a good book check it out .

    A creative and captivating fantasy!!
Justice, Moira, Darien and other characters and well developed and interesting. The story starts heating up soon into the story and doesn't let up! The teens go through traumatic situations while discovering who they are. The author is engaging, detailed and entertaining as she creates a fantasy tale that is sure to please all who enjoy a mystical tale. The first person narrative is exceptional and the reader can feel what Justice feels. Although there are a few themes suited best for an older teen/young adult, the trivialities of the teenage mind portrayed richly through Justice and Moira are suited for most teens.
All around a great story told by a great author!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A promising fantasy debut

In most books there are elements that have been replayed in many tales. Making the need to write well or change the narrative to make it different imperative.

This book has the premise of being written well without doing anything too different, which in itself is not a bad thing.

In essence a familiar story of a coming of age for the main character that is mixed with loyal friendships and a forbidden love. The main character is Justice a female heroine who is a typical teenager that happens to go through a constant trail of difficult scenarios. An almost cursed sense of misfortune follows her like a dark cloud throughout the story.

This obviously drains the character and of course love is the key for support. Whether that comes from friends or a lover.

The beginning plays really strong with various high school antagonisers drawing sympathy and empathy simultaneously depending on your life experience. The writer seems to sense the fatigue element of the break in the story between the next set piece. Just as the characters woes or trivial talk gets tiresome, a sudden impact alerts the reader from any sense of lull.

The story switches to a magical change that moves the story to the fantasy genre. Often symbolic of the switch from puberty to adulthood. The format continues of a break before a new plot turn.
The love interest is an interesting play of an experienced lover with what is a fresh faced young adult in the character Justice. They dominate proceedings and some of the other established characters fade into the background.

The new antagoniser is delightfully evil and there is a sense of loss when she is out scene, but you know she is coming soon to cause fresh pain. Due to this being a series, you can except other characters and back stories will be further explained. Whether they have enough pull from the main leads is another question.

The surprises are little telegraphed and as mentioned the set up before a new plot turn could be a stronger, especially in terms of the dialogue. However this is overall a well written story that gives enough investment for readers to continue with the next part in the series.

This book is everything you could want from a paranormal novel.

It's action packed with supernatural beings galore. The pace is non stop and once you're finished, it feels like you've been on an epic adventure, with your two best friends, and a rather attractive young man.

    I highly recommend it!
