A Sure Thing (Stories From a Post-Break World) Kindle Edition
In the post-Break world of superpowers, Los Angeles is a city divided between the haves and the have-nots, the rich and the poor, the Capes and the Black Hats.
But there is a secret organization working in the shadows of the underworld. The Company focuses on illicit profit instead of mayhem or fame.
Clive Treeble isn't a Power. He isn't much of anything at all, other than a petty criminal struggling to hold on to his mother's house.
Until the day an old acquaintance reaches out with an offer. The Company needs a man for its latest heist. Succeed and Clive's future is assured. Fail and the city might not be big enough to hide in.
Stories From a Post-Break World are short tales that take place in the same post-apocalyptic superhero world as See These Bones and the rest of the Murder of Crows trilogy.

About the author

Chris began as a gleam in someone’s eye, but birth and childhood were quick to follow. He’s been fortunate enough to live in Spain, Germany, and all over the USA, and is busy planning a tour of the distilleries of Scotland.
He currently lives in Nevada with his angelic wife and ever-expanding whisky collection and occasionally ventures outside to peer upwards, mutter to himself about ‘day stars’, and then scurry back into the house.
Chris is the author of multiple fantasy series: The Murder of Crows, The Many Travails of John Smith, The Storm Who Rides, The (Second) Life of Brian, and Stories From a Post-Break World. He regularly shares status updates on his author website..

- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2022Not only is the style of these books amazing, the content amazing, and the tone but the way that they tie into the original trilogy just BLEW MY MIND! These are amazing stories but the original trilogy is honestly the best super hero series I've ever had the privilege to read!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2022A nice underworld heist story with a backstory twist that makes the adventure a fun one. I enjoyed the take on post apocalypse crime in a world is supers and norms struggling to survive. Ok, not quite that grandiose but still a fun read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2021I loved this new story! It fits well into the world created by the author, but also show how well he can nail other genres, this being a great heist story. I would love to see the main character spin out to more stories or get some quality time in the main books.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2021This story gives the reader a glimpse into Kayleigh's childhood and how she met her bodyguard. It does not add much to the main story, but it is nice nonetheless.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2021Good to see normal people have creation stories too. Interesting concept. I hope to read more. Nicely paced. Good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2023The author has a knack for shorts. I’ll be interested if these characters merge into his series. Although short, the nature of the principals is consistent with the post-Break world he’s created - dark yet somehow protagonist personalities.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 20253.5 stars; better than average, of all the novellas I have read.
Not as good as the first Post-Break trilogy by far, but entertaining and a believable ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2021I love the depth and backstory that Chris is building in this world. He has done a great job of providing a timeline and giving you hints at when the events take place. The story lines up well with the main sequence ad we get a feel for LA outside of the school (which seems to be a fairly new thing at this point). I also enjoyed the brief description of Paladin in this book. We get a feeling that something is slightly off about this hero, just from the short blurb.
Great short, can't wait for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Man, I didn't see that end coming! I love how the author find new ways to add more stories to the Post-Break World without repeating himself at all!

5.0 out of 5 stars So very, very good
I needed a short distraction this morning and this story took me away and gave me the escape I needed. It was well rafted, compelling and so very, very good.
