~~
A dark romance, edging the boundaries of sensuality with scenes bordering on explicit.
This story is not in Elizabeth Bailey’s usual vein of sweet and clean traditional romance.

About the author

Elizabeth Bailey grew up in Africa with unconventional parents, where she loved reading and drama. On returning to England, she developed her career in acting, theatre directing and finally writing.
Elizabeth's latest venture is The Lady Fan Mystery series, published by Sapere Books. The novels feature amateur sleuth Lady Ottilia Fanshawe and a cast of family members including her husband and champion Lord Francis Fanshawe. She originally published Regency romances with Harlequin Mills & Boon and has many titles in her Brides by Chance Regency Adventures series, now also published by Sapere, as well as standalone Regency and Georgian romances.
Elizabeth also writes edgy women's fiction: Her dual time novel Fly The Wild Echoes, which deals with past lives, and For One More Tomorrow, where the ghost of the real Macbeth returns, protesting his villainous portrayal by Shakespeare. And she has published a romantic suspense novella, Silence of a Stranger.
Elizabeth lives in Sussex, England. She is still an inveterate reader with eclectic tastes and she spends her spare time helping other writers improve their craft.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2019Elizabeth writes her tales full of intrigue, the dialogue between the characters is often witty or passionate which makes for the perfect romance. Can't wait to inhale her other books. Treat yourself to an excellent Regency Romance wonderfully crafted by Elizabeth Bailey.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2017I liked this work very much. The characters were very interesting, and I wish there was more of this book. It was nice to read a work that struck such a great balance between personal emotion and the social strictures of the Georgian era. Spoiler: this work is neither a "clean romance" nor a "sexually explicit" book. The author treads a line here that I like. Even though there is sex in it she doesn't do that annoyingly graphic modern writing that, in my opinion, gets in the way of historical romances. I prefer to imagine or not imagine as I please.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2017If you normally like this author for her clean stories, skip this one. She at least didn't write explicitly, but basically the book descends into an illicit affair. Yes in the end they marry, however the numerous sexual encounters ruined the story. The heroine was supposed to have integrity, she had so much integrity to return a valuable gem, yet could not keep her integrity against a man. The plot then became about passion rather than the actual story line first introduced.
The story had a lot of potential and the author writes so well, but it was ruined once sex was introduced. The plot disappears when authors turn a story into all consuming passion that has no bounds.
If you want a true historical romance, skip this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2021As other reviewers have commented, this is slightly steamier than Ms. Bailey’s usual. It is still very mild. I wasn’t sure I would like the book at first, but got into it as it went on. I like the feeling of real people under the manners of the day. The writing, of course, is wonderful. This is not as light and frothy as most books in this genre. It is more character driven than most. I am giving it four stars because i have trouble reconciling the frothiness with the reality. It is still very good and I recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2017Elizabeth Bailey has long been one of the best historical romance writers. This tale in the hands of many “Regency” authors might have become maudlin, routine, or unsuitably graphic (given that it is basically a character study that occasionally ends up in the bedroom). Given Bailey’s command of the language, her plotting, and the not infrequent music of her phrasing, I was gripped by her tale and sympathetic to the desires and aspirations of her characters right to the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2020This is one of Elizabeth Bailey’s hottest books!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2019I enjoy Elizabeth Bailey's books for all that I feel sometimes like I am watching (reading?) an accident about to happen. I want to yell "watch out!" or "don't do that!" but am frozen and can only keep reading in a sort of daze. I am often frustrated and some times horrified by the characters actions (or inability to act). Yet, Bailey does tell an entertaining yarn.
Once again I found myself mesmerized as I watched the H and h on a collision course that was much like watching a train wreck. I had no problems with reading a story that was "racier" than her stories tend to be and if you have an aversion to that then this may not be the book for you. However, I found myself comparing a lot of the feel of this book to Wuthering Heights. But here's the thing...I HATED Wuthering Height's Heathcliff and Catherine. I really did. These 2 people had no thought for anyone or anything except each other and they caused havoc to anyone near them even the next generation. Now, Jerome and Florence are not so destructive or near as bad. But the potential was there. The pull they felt for each other overrode ANY common sense. And Jerome's possessive attitude was disturbing (Heathcliff anyone?).
Personally, I enjoyed the story and definitely don't regret reading it. One thing I appreciated about it was that the characters definitely spoke up with each other. I find the most stressful thing about Bailey's stories is that her characters often think things but are never...able...to...spit...it...out. It gets to the point where I am mentally finishing their unfinished sentences and thoughts for them. So whew. At least I didn't have that issue with this one...
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2022So yes, this is "racy" if by that you mean there is allusions to sex though as language goes I mean it is the difference between seeing a double bed in a room and twin bed like they stupidly did in the 50's. I know some people are objecting to "illicit" affair and I have to roll my eyes. I get not wanting graphic language, and wanting more character development but if you are that anti-sex that this offends your moral sensibilities don't read romances. Certainly don't read historical ones because the people of that time understood the point of marriage.
As with many romances there is perhaps too big attraction too soon even in difficult encounters and not after the encounter broke through to honesty (which is more normal). I'm a bit conflicted on whether one would have tried quite that hard to return the jewel, maybe a little bit more compulsion to feel honest.
And as with many romances the male lead is wildly entitled (definitely aspects of Heathcliffe here) but at least he's charged with his selfishness by the heroine so there is that.

3.0 out of 5 stars A dark tale about two slightly depressed people.
I normally enjoy this author but I found this book quite hard going.
Flo, the heroine, and her sister are very hard up.She is only able to afford to buy pawned clothes. She finds something of great value sewn into the lining of a garment and feels compelled to investigate and return it to its original owner. This seems to me quite perverse. By this action she becomes involved with the hero. The couple have both suffered misfortunes and both are quite embittered.
Flo becomes a companion to the hero's widowed mother . At this point in the story I found I agreed with the dowager's assessment of Flo; that there is something dour about her, and that her precocious but naive younger sister, whilst pert and silly, is far more entertaining.

4.0 out of 5 stars Flo flees from a lecherous guardian and pitches her pride and integrity against scandal
Her primness and irascibility mask a passionate nature that remains untapped and unacknowledged in the desperate flight to shield herself and her adolescent sister from the scandal of their mother's past degradation. But fate brings a tormented Viscount into their orbit and the plot thickens with a clever mix of events and characters, seasoned with some sharp exchanges and lustful interludes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, feisty HEA
This enjoyable HEA features a very feisty heroine, and equally feisty hero. There are plenty of flawed characters in this book, making it more realistic than most romances, and the plot is engaging. While technically it is "clean", the act is referred to, past and future, and while doors close on the scene, it's only in the nick of time, so be aware if that's not your bag. I enjoy this author's writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Historical Romance
Nog usually my genre but I loved reading this book. The I credible language used was fascinating in that it used words which I’ve rarely come across in any book I’ve read. The journey was memorable. The efforts by which Florence has strived to better herself and give her young sister a huge chance at the best life possible. Overall a wonderful story and I will definitely read more from this author again

3.0 out of 5 stars Different
I am a fan of Elizabeth Bailey's writing style. Her stories usually have a good sprinkling of humour and happy characters. This one is certainly different.
I didn't dislike it but I can't say I loved it either.
I may come back to this book and re-read in a few months, it might change my opinion. For the moment I can just say it was OK and move on to her next book.
