"A racing climax and a fully satisfying ending" – Kate Quinn
1960s Roma Nova. Retrained as an undercover agent, ex-Praetorian officer Aurelia Mitela is sent to Berlin to investigate silver smuggling, but barely escapes a near-lethal trap. Her lifelong nemesis, Caius Tellus, is determined to eliminate her. When Aurelia is closing in on him, he strikes at her most vulnerable point – her young daughter.

A former military commander, Aurelia is one of Roma Nova’s strong women, but she doubts in her heart and mind that she can overcome her implacable enemy. And what part does the mysterious and attractive Miklós play – a smuggler who knows too much?

If you enjoy reading mystery books for women with plenty of twists and a female protagonist driving the action, this is for you!

First in the Aurelia strand in the Roma Nova series where Roman fiction is brought into the 20th century through an alternative history lens. NEXUS, INSURRECTIO and RETALIO follow.

Review

"This is a wonderful opening for a series that will have readers spellbound, a narrative with an appeal for readers with different tastes, melding the fine craft of a spy thriller with the sophisticated characters in mystery, and the fascinating setting of a historical novel. " - Readers' Favorite "Alison Morton's skill as a writer is superb; her heroines are feisty and full of kick-ass determination; the heroes are heroic, and the villains are the thoroughly nasty bad-guys they are meant to be." - Historical Novel Society "Morton raises the bar on her Nova Roma series with a thrilling and intriguing history of what might have been. Effortlessly weaving fact and speculative fiction, AURELIA explores a 1960s that is at once familiar and utterly different - a brilliant page turner that will keep you gripped from first page to last. Highly recommended." - Russell Whitfield, author of the Gladiatrix series "Meticulously researched. Wonderfully imagined. Alison Morton's Roma Nova will stay with you long after you have closed the pages." - Liesel Schwarz, author of Chronicles of Light and Shadow "What if the Roman Empire hadn't fallen? Alison Morton handles this intriguing premise with her customary panache in AURELIA." - Ruth Downie, author of the Ruso Medicus series "Brilliant! Alison Morton's alternative world of Roma Nova - a feisty soldier heroine plunged into the depths of criminal conspiracy, and mind-blowing action all the way to the tense finale. Aurelia is a fabulous read." - David Ebsworth, Historical Novel Society award-winning author"Yet again, Ms Morton paints this alternate world of hers with such colours, such details, that by the time the book has ended it comes as a surprise to return to a world without Roma Nova, without strong, impressive women like Aurelia Mitela. I am already looking forward to the next installment - in fact, I crave a next installment!" - Anna Belfrage, author of The Graham Saga "This is a wonderful opening for a series that will have readers spellbound, a narrative with an appeal for readers with different tastes, melding the fine craft of a spy thriller with the sophisticated characters in mystery, and the fascinating setting of a historical novel. This book begins the back story of the first three Nova Roma books. While it stands alone, it would be more fun it you began with the first book (Inceptio). Excellent alternative history with an intriguing take on (reimagining of) gender roles. These books are so good that I bought them one after another over a weekend and read them back to back.

There are many novels that take as their starting point the assumption that a major historical event turned out differently: The South won the US Civil War, Hitler conquered Europe and kept it, the Spanish bested Drake or Napoleon won at Waterloo. Alison Morton’s four Nova Roma books take a different path. Instead of a different outcome, Ms. Morton imagines what happened if a culture survived.

The idea: A small corner of the Roman Empire survived, keeping some of the culture and religion of Rome – and Latin! – alive into the twentieth century, while the country itself – Nova Roma – had to change to accommodate technological changes. Like Switzerland, Nova Roma has never been conquered. Morton takes practices that were alive during Roman times, such as Senators having clients, and imagines how those practices morphed in almost 2,000 years.

There is a further twist, a twist that makes the books so imaginative. Unlike Switzerland, a patriarchal society, Nova Roma is a matriarchy, albeit a modern one.
So what is excellent about the books?
1. Use of history. Ms. Morton has thought out how today would be different if Nova Roma existed for the past 2000 years. BUT, this history is dropped into the plot in frozen blocks; instead, only when relevant is it mentioned.
2. Use of history. As far as I can determine or remember from my history and years of Latin, the little details of society then are accurate. This makes it so easy to accept Ms. Morton’s recreation of them in modern form – no “willing suspension of disbelief” is required.
3. Plot. Well thought through. Each book has a natural conclusion (no cliffhangers), while creating the beginnings of events that will form the plots for the next books.
4. Characters. I am a fan of strong women – women with “agency” – the ability to make things happen rather than respond to events. It is also the ability to learn from mistakes.
5. Complicated personal relationship(s). There is a romance here, in addition to mystery and suspense. The romance is far from linear.
What didn’t I like? I think that the female lead, Carina Mitela, should have made a different romantic choice. However, I’m male, and I tend to be harder on male characters than I gather female readers are.
My standard disclaimer: I purchase the books, I don’t know the author and I wasn’t asked to review them.

Starting a series with Book 4 may not always be a good thing – except when the content is laid out by a writer like Alison Morton. No wonder, Aurelia, Book 4 of the Roma Nova Series, is a Finalist for the 2016 Historical Novel Society Indie Award. Furthermore, Aurelia is a B.R.A.G. Medallion Honoree for excellence in writing. (“Honoree” having nothing to do with “honorable mention.” This is the real deal.)

While there was plenty of action, the language flowed easily yet was intelligent; it didn’t need grisly detail or expletives to make you sit up a little straighter and hold your breath, wondering what was to come next. Toward the end, I actually became worried I might run out of pages before the story ended – I did not. But I was sorry to have come to the end of such an interesting speculative fiction premise.

Thank you, Alison Morton, for the enjoyable hours I spent reading Aurelia.

Book 4 in this suspenseful series did not disappoint! Aurelia is a strong woman faced with all sorts of adversity; survives brutality, loss and heartbreak with a calm dignity that I'd expect from a Roman. I've enjoyed getting to know much more about the family matriarch that we meet in the first three books - what makes her tick and why she is who she is when Carina meets her grandmother in book 1 (INCEPTIO). I find the attention to detail in these books phenomenal as well - I feel as if Roma Nova truly does exist due to the seamless way Ms. Morton has woven this fictional country into modern times. Bring on book V!!

Aurelia is the first of the prequel series to the Roma Nova series that is set in the late 1960s. It is about the grandmother to the protagonist Carina. In this series, Aurelia is a high-ranking noblewoman and a Praetorian officer. When she finds out that someone is smuggling silver, she is sent to Berlin to investigate. There she finds that her nemesis, Caius Tellus, is involved in this plot. Aurelia then goes on her quest to pursue him and to capture him.

I felt sorry for Aurelia. This woman did not have it easy. She had lost many people whom she loved. The only person that is still living is her child, but she is sickly. because she is emotionally distraught she has given up her job. However, no matter how deep in mourning she is in, she must go back to work. I like how she is curious, for she has a lot of questions that she wants answers to. However, while I did like her character, I thought she was too perfect for my taste. She is a Mary Sue. She does not really have any faults. She is intelligent, strong, and good at fighting.I wish there was more development to her character.

Overall, this is about family, friendship, and love. The story is fast-paced and action-packed. It is a page turner that will keep you entertained throughout the book. However, there were some sad scenes that I did not like, and I really did not like her love interest. Even though the ending was a setup for the next book, I do wish that it ended differently. Still, I found the world-building to be very interesting and complex, and it gave us a lot of detail to the world that she created. I felt like I was a visitor to her alternative world. Because this book is a prequel, you do not have to read the Roma Nova series to enjoy this book. I recommend this book to those interested in science fiction, action thrillers, and anyone who like to think about the “what ifs” of famous historical figures and how the world would be different if their lives had been different.
(Note: This book was given to me as part of a blog tour in exchange for an honest review.)

3.0 out of 5 stars The concept was interesting and the story and characters were pretty good as a whole
Reviewed in Canada on May 24, 2017
Rather disappointing in the end. The concept was interesting and the story and characters were pretty good as a whole, but the heroine was wildly inconsistent and a couple of scenes ruined the entire novel. The heroine is presented as tough and professional but suddenly goes ga-ga after a single glance of a gypsy. This part seemed like a trite stereotype of an empty-headed VERY YOUNG teen-aged girl who ignores responsibilities and work in order to spend a single night having sex with a "tall dark stranger". Any hopes that this was an aberration are dashed when the story ends with the heroine dashing off to have yet another fling with this stranger who is suddenly her heart throb. It's enough to make you gag. It really adds nothing to the story or plot. It's like someone told the author that there had to be some love and sex, so the author simply wrote a couple of scenes geared for very young and/or vapid girls without regard to the rest of the novel. It felt like these were lifted from a completely different book and plunked in. A real shame to ruin an otherwise good story. I had been thinking to read the rest of the series otherwise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unputdownable
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 10, 2016
Alison Morton's books have become a signal part of my yearly calendar. I wait impatiently for their release and dedicate May to their enjoyment. I find the books close to unputdownable and read them through in a day or two. After which I have to go back to the beginning again and read them at my leisure to get the most from the complex and multilayered plots.

Aurelia is no exception to this and kept me up at night in the days after purchase. It tells the story of the redoubtable grandmother of the heroine of Morton's earlier books, fleshing out Roma Novan history along the way. I look forward to the further segments of the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another splendid hard-boiled thriller in a credible alternate universe setting
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 18, 2015
For the fourth time Alison Morton has pulled off the trick of combining the hard-boiled thriller genre with that of alternate universe fiction. The result is an enjoyable read but , more than that, by moving back two generations from the characters who feature in the first three novels in the series, the alternate world of Roma Nova is given even greater historical credibility than before. Set in the 1960s, the differences between that era and the world of the early twenty-first century in which the previous books were set, is subtly conveyed – an all the more creditable achievement since it relates to an imaginary but internally-consistent universe. Reading this novel makes one hope that Ms. Morton will set later books in other historical periods, so as to flesh out the trials, tribulations and triumphs of Roma Nova at critical points in the last seventeen centuries. One would like to know more about the foundation years in the early fifth century, of the roles Roma Nova might have played in the repulse of the Mongol, and later the Turkish, threats to Central Europe, how it fared in the Reformation and Thirty Years’ War periods – the list is endless. Given Ms. Morton’s proven ability to construct a gripping story and a fascinating setting we have much to hope for. More please!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, wow and wow again!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 28, 2015
Wow, wow & wow again!! I thought Alison's original trilogy of life in Roma Nova was good, and was disappointed that I thought it had gone as far as it could
But I never thought of a prequel ( I think I would do well as a man in Roma Nova!) The story of Aurelia in her early days was as good as any spy /thriller novel I have read in many a year
The other reviews have detailed the storyline so I shall not repeat it here. Suffice to say it only took a couple of days to read. It was engrossing from the first few pages
I believe there is another in the pipeline and I look forward to that arriving
To think that when I got the first book, I wasn't sure.......................silly me!!!!
Well done Alison, another blockbuster of a book. Thank you
