An Unexpected Title Kindle Edition

Murder, mystery, and marriage!

A marriage proposal. Not such a terrible thing, but a broken heart and injured pride are not easy to overcome, as Asher Derwent had already discovered. Women were far too contrary and likely to change their mind. Being jilted once in a lifetime was quite enough for any man.

But with this particular proposal came an estate, a fortune. And an unexpected title. Did he dare refuse? The marriage was merely a contract to keep a woman safe. Falling in love wasn’t part of the bargain. He had no intention of doing anything so foolish again. Especially not as she was clearly the worst kind of woman. A young incomparable with a challenge in her eyes and an unwavering lilt to her delicate chin.

Madeleine’s outrage knew no bounds. How dare her father coldly inform her of whom she would marry only the night before the dratted man arrived? She had plans, plans that did not include an overbearing, oaf telling her what to do every minute of the day or, even more humiliating, during the intimate hours of the night. If her father hadn’t been so ill, she might have been tempted to strangle him with her own bare hands!

But it seemed that she wouldn’t need to, for by the time the dreaded day arrives, the earl is dead and the house is in mourning. A murderer has come during the night robbing Madeleine of both her father and her prized independence, and Asher of any choice.

Can Asher and Madeleine cease their hostilities long enough to discover the murderer’s identity, or will their future be consumed by the secrets hiding within Claiborne?

I was born in Essex England during the mid sixties but I missed all the fun. Being only young I assumed that all Beatles were six legged creatures and Flower Power was something to do with the vigorous way my mother kneaded the bread dough.

My wonderful parents brought me up with a huge love of books. We read anything and everything. Bedtime stories were a treasured time of adventure and mystery. My sister and I sat wide eyed in wonder and to this day I worry about Dinah and Dorinda being pricked with pins because they grew so fat, and I never pull faces at the a waning moon (or was it a waxing one?) just in case my chops stay that way . (The Wind On The Moon)

I began reading romance while still at school. The fuel for many a teenage fantasy leapt from between the covers of wildly romantic books and my passion still lingers now for all those dashing, dark haired heroes.

My own beautiful daughter persuaded me to write my first romance. She enjoyed the resulting tale so much that she shared it with her friends and I eventually published A Perfect Summer as an ebook on amazon.

But I have discovered that this writing bug is not easily stopped. It has turned into a grand passion that I just cannot hold back. Ideas come flooding in the strangest of places. While driving the car, when choosing ripe avocados in the supermarket, even during sweaty sessions at the gym, far too many for just one book and so I began another and then another. Eight years and twenty-five books later I am still nowhere near done. Book 26 is on its way and only just the other night I woke from a wild and wonderful dream with yet another plot fully formed in my head.

I hope you enjoy all of my efforts and I look forward to your comments and reviews.

I've read several books by this author and I'm always taken by how fast I devour them. I seriously know that I have to wait until the weekend to start one, because I won't want to do anything else until I"m done reading. This wonderful, romantic mystery was the same. Asher and Madeleine are both strong-willed characters which makes them suited for each other if they can just get out of their own way. That said the strongest element of this story for me was a mystery. Someone murdered Madeleine's father and they could still be there. The setting added a lot to the feel of the novel with it's secret passages and sprawling estate. I loved that I was kept guessing for a fair amount of the story, but that if you pay attention the clues are there and you can figure it out before the reveal. The staff and other characters, like the doctor, add a rich depth to the world that makes me happy there will be more to come next year. If you love your mystery with a dash of romance and small dab of heat, this one will please.

Richard Derwent, Fifth Earl of Claiborne wants to ensure his daughter Madeleine will be looked after when he’s gone and makes arrangements for her engagement to a man she’s never met. Benjamin Asher Derwent is a man still recovering from rejection by his former fiancée. Will he marry for money this time?

Asher Derwent arrives at Claiborne Hall to be greeted with the news that the earl has been murdered. But who did it? Was it Thomas Leyman, the stable master, Aiden, Flack the butler, Mary the maid, Gertrude the new maid, Mrs. Grenfell the housekeeper, Phillips, the master’s valet, Dr. Finch, Asher Derwent, the Sixth Earl of Claiborne? Or even Madeleine or Mathews the constable? I kept guessing until the end in this romance-tinged delightful historical murder mystery.

I loved this story line. But I have enjoyed a lot of books by this amazing author. From page one, I was drawn in. Jackie Williams, I think I want to inherit an estate too. :) "I love the name Asher, by the way."

The author creates books that will fascinate her readers. As always, I look forward to her nest book!

This page-turning story of an arranged marriage combined with a murder mystery was hard to put down! The well-developed characters came alive and it was fun to try to figure out who was the murderer. I loved the progression of Ash and Madeleine’s relationship. This is a sweet romance with wonderful characters, both good and bad. I hope there will be a second book in this series and I look forward to reading more from this author.

“An Unexpected Title” is a wonderful historical romance that I would highly recommend to all fans of the genre. I found it so enjoyable for several reasons: Madeleine, the main heroine, won me over right away with her personality and no-nonsense attitude. In the age where reputation and money meant everything, she clearly valued her personal happiness above all, which made me admire her even more. Another reason that makes “An Unexpected Title” stand out among other books in the same genre, is the absence of a “hate-to-love” device that many historical romances use and which I personally find detestable. Here, on the contrary, we meet two characters who are brought together by an unexpected twist of fate and who work together on trying to work out the best arrangement that would be in their common interest. I really appreciated the maturity of both Madeleine and Ash in this respect and couldn’t help but root for them even more. The mystery aspect (which was very cleverly executed by the way) made the story even more riveting and intriguing, and I couldn’t help but wonder who was the guilty party and what their true motive was. Overall, it’s an excellent novel that will transport you back in time and make you enjoy every moment of it. Five stars!

A combination of mystery and romance in a historical setting. The book was well-written and had enough suspense to hold your interest and keep you guessing, whilst compiling the given clues to solve the mystery.

I also loved the characters and the general telling of the story. An easy and enjoyable read.

10 stars. Though the book has 1-2 mild sex scenes and lustful thoughts, nevertheless it's not a clean read for those looking for it. The book kept me so engaged that I read it in a single go. There are very few stories that hold your attention and this one did. If you are looking more on for romance then this one doesn't have much of it. The intrigue and mystery of the plot captures your attention and holds it. There is a definite chemistry between the main characters and I am glad there is no insta love.
The story starts with Earl arranging marriage of his only daughter with the next heir who is also the Hero of the story. He has failing health and doesn't want his daughter to be destitute post his death as he had no son. Madeline doesn't want to marry as she wants to marry for love while Asher was jilted in the past and doesn't want to love but agrees for marriage of convenience. Just prior to Asher's arrival, Earl informs his daughter of the engagement and she refuses vehemently. That night, Earl is murdered and what follows next is finding the murderer. Both of them now would have to work together before Madeline becomes the next victim of the murderer
It's quite interesting and diabolical plot. I had read author's previous work and this one was equally good. Though there are few grammatical mistakes, if you ignore them, it's quite a good read

Recommend to anyone looking for a fun read in the historical romance/mystery genre.
An enjoyable, well-written book. Sometimes when I'm reading I get a feel of the author's intentions. With this book I had the strong sense the author wants to entertain and distract the reader for a few hours. And she certainly does.
The mystery and romance elements are fairly equally balanced. At the centre of the story is an arranged marriage between a headstrong woman happier riding her horse than attending dances and a businessman who has been jilted in the past. Mix in a couple of murders and a house riddled with secret passages and the scene is set for a great story.
    Fun and entertaining.
