- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2023This is a very (very) well-written book. It demonstrates great use of language, excellent building of characters and their backstories (both MCs and supporting), wonderful humor, and overall a really good ice-queen story from an original point of view.
The book is a nonstop rollercoaster but there's hardly any "action" in it. There is so much emotional development and such complexity in the surrounding environment (supporting characters, backstory, time jumps and flashbacks, etc.) that I didn't feel like the plot is lacking in any way. It was magnificent :) I enjoyed reading it so much!
In a way, one could say that this book has too much of everything: Too much emotion, too many ice queens, too many metaphors, and too much complexity of MCs and supporting characters alike. You may think that "too much" is a negative thing, but this is not the case. In this very particular case, it serves the story and the book is better for it.
Let me elaborate: This is quite a long novel. It is not always easy to keep the reader engaged throughout a long novel. This novel has over 115K words and I could continue reading it even if it was double that number. The plethora of elements in the story, the rich language, the original POV (when have you recently read a book told solely from the ice queen's POV?), the authentic feeling of the extreme backstory, and the endless and recurring metaphors - everything comes together to create a literary jungle with a clear, albeit narrow, path for the reader.
When you read this book you are flooded with visual images, emotional highs (and lows), and profound insight into the MC's motivation and drive. The sheer complexity that the structure of the book lends to the story is a whole element unto itself. I am talking about the therapy sessions and the following scenes (which mostly precede the therapy session chronologically), and the numerous flashbacks - a complex structure yet very well-executed. It is highly organized, consistent, and justified by the MC's state of mind.
Despite the high potential for confusion, it works, and it works well. It becomes a sort of milestone, showing the reader the MC's development arc, and it anchors the reader back in the story among many time jumps. In my mind, this book has all the dangers of the jungle but also all its beauty. The structure makes it easy to go through the jungle and walk that narrow path I mentioned earlier, without losing sight of the beauty and richness of the surrounding view. The mere quantity of the elements paves the journey through this story and turns it into a rich environment, such that cannot be ignored or put aside. I literally could not put aside the reading and finished the book within a few hours of intense reading. My eyes were killing me but I couldn't stop.
So yeah, it's too much but that's not a bad thing :)
Having said all that, I must point out that this is a very "white" book (a few supporting characters are maybe Hispanic? suggested by name only). While it is not a flaw in itself, it still bothers me when there isn't enough representation for POC, especially in such a rich and otherwise varied environment. Also, I found a factual error in a piece of trivia mentioned in the book and it kind of threw me out of my headspace for a bit.
Last, and certainly not least, I would like to offer another reading of this novel. There are many self-proclaimed metaphors and numerous overt references to literary tropes such as ice queens, lack of communication between MCs, and the conflict 80% into a book... All these 'tongue in cheek' moments wrap up the novel in uncharacteristic self-awareness and humor (it could be seen as self-deprecating humor on the author's side) and turn it into a novel that can be read as a satirical take on the ice-queen trope (or any other trope that appears in the book for that matter). I find that it adds yet another layer of subtext, adding to the overall complexity of this novel.
T&T:
Tropes: ice queen, age gap, 2nd chance, miscommunication, from rags to riches, workplace romance (hot for boss), redemption through love
Triggers: PTSD, abusive family (mostly off-page), infidelity
Rating: 5 stars across the board! I am in awe of the literary creation which is this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2022I'm quite disappointed.
At myself of course, I should've known better, paced the reading, but no here I am writing a wanna be review after an overnight and 2hs of sleep and a lot of staring into nothing for a few more. Because it ended too soon. I don't even know how to feel. I know I had the socks knocked off of me, but also there's this empty feeling because it's over... Like that Escobar meme from Narcos
Anyway, gurrrl, what I did just read? For real, Milena is spoiling us rotten with her releases. Is she going to keep up? I'm sure she will and I cannot wait to witness more of it.
With the mood set in the first part I thought the whole book would be heavy on angst, and even though it wasn't what I qualify as unbearable I still felt like suffocating on many occasions (have in mind that I avoid angst filled books like people used to avoid the plague, before COVID). It had its lingering effects in the 2nd part, but it was also freeing, funny, loving, intriguing and exhilarating. That board/model bit got me gushing. Above all, from the beginning to the very end, aWoS was gorgeous, witty, heartbreaking, heartwarming, knocker of socks. I cried with sadness, ire, laughter and finally joy. Not a single moment of boredom.
Most books I rather not dwell on things that I don't like, because (unless is something really bad) I think is irrelevant to comment on, but even if I wanted to do it now, I couldn't. Because you see, there isn't a single thing I could criticize, maybe the fact that it ended?
Neve is, as her name imply in Portuguese, an Ice Queen through and through. The thing starting around page 59 and the chain reaction it unleashed got me staring at the ceiling in disbelief for several minutes... Aghast, I felt that betrayal as if it was with me... The cruelty, W O W. Neve even used the right word to describe it, carnage. And the blows kept coming and coming I thought it would be almost impossible for her to redeem herself, but SHE DID IT! By the end it felt like she deserved the forgiveness (but it was not forgotten).
Mind you, Audrey didn't deserve all the shit she received, wow, a person can only take so much before falling apart and she did hold her shit together quite well, impressively. She is the kind of character you wanna enter the story to protect, to hold tight and whisper "things gonna be fine, sweetheart", "they gonna be better, love", because she deserves better. Thank goodness Neve got HER shit together and gave the love she so much deserved. They finally got their Happy Ending.
And just one last observation, I'm not that well versed in the lesfic world but so far I don't think I've read that many books with the Ice Queen-only POV, alternating yes, exclusively no. It's usually from the eyes of the admirer, the one in awe, the thawer. By the ice cold bitch, I don't recall many. Because I think it's easier not to care so much about the IQ's thoughts, their actions usually speak louder than anything else ever could. So this was really refreshing, IMHO. However, I was itching to know what was going on Audrey's mind during the whole ordeal.
Anyway, like a good greedy reader I seriously wouldn't mind more glimpses of their happy moments in the future to atone the whole lot of angst they went through here. hihi
p.s.: I've read this one 1st on kindle, but had to import the paperback from the US store, worth every penny in shipment fee.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking, perfect
I don't think I ever felt so exhausted reading a book. I'm not sure how to describe it, but you damn well know as a reader if a book makes you scream, cry, laugh hysterical. Then it's an extraordinary book.
In my opinion, this book was written very differently from regular romance books, and it was captivating. I suppose because it's as much a romance book as a losing and finding oneself book.
Neve and Audrey were incredibly complex but utterly fascinating. Their relationship is destructive, wholesome, heartbreaking, and adorable. I know it's doesn’t even make sense, but somehow, they do completely. The whole public thing was hilarious and very much needed as pause in the middle of this crisis.
Highly recommend! This is an emotional roller-coaster.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh bittersweet
God, so much pain!!!
I actually stopped reading because I started to hate Neve, so I just had to quit, then I came back
I really can't understand how Audrey kept loving her, seriously, I just... can't
But, I wish we could see more of them really together, not just on Neve's memories, I mean, there is so much pain, and I actually suffered with them, so I think I deserved more

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book
I crued, and laughed, and cried again, sometimes not even knowing if they were happy or sad tears. It is the beautiful story of characters with such depth that the frontiers with reality get blurred. Neve taught me things, I don't believe it is possible for one to read this story, which is as much a romance as a novel on overcoming traumas, without growing up somehow.
I very rarely am so touched by a story, but this one definitely did that. As Neve said, this story made me FEEL.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
It is truly something else to read a whole book from the Ice Queen's point of view. Neve is such a fascinating character and her scenes with her therapist are truly great. Audrey and Neve are so great together!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ein Wahnsinnsbuch
