Abilene Gamble (Gamble on Judgment Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 50 ratings

Harry Bradford is a lawyer and sometimes detective. Some call him a bounty hunter. With half of his face torn to pieces toward the end of the Civil War, people turn away from him. He fled his native Indiana where people did not wish to hire anyone who reminded them of the war. He hoped to find among the drovers, stock yards, railroads, homesteaders and trouble-making drifters pouring into Abilene, Kansas, during the hey-day of the cattle drives enough work to provide a reason to keep living.

Stella Schoenfeld, raised in the well-to-do merchant class of Indianapolis, tracks her runaway brother, Nathan, to Abilene. She is desperate to settle their father’s estate so she can move forward with her life. In spite of the warrant out for his arrest related to the incident that left her scarred visibly—and in other ways not visible—she comes to bring him home.

While Harry guides Stella around Abilene, he realizes they have a connection neither would have guessed. Driven by revenge, Harry agrees to find her brother but not for the reason she expects, even though he knows it will cost him the only woman he has ever dared to love.

Henry Bradford was a lawyer who was disfigured in an accident at the end of the war. He was searching for the people who were responsible. He ended up in Abilene, Kansas after not finding work in Indiana and met Stella Schoenfeld from Indianapolis who was trying to find her brother, Nathan, who had disappeared, so she could settle her father's estate.

Henry guides Stella around Abilene, and realizes that there is a connection between her brother and Henry's injury earlier. Will Henry exact vengeance on Nathan and risk losing Stella? Read the book to find out!

    Abilene Kansas, 1871

A story of loss and pain, with a wonderful chance of love and understanding, bring this heartfelt story to life.

Harry had been through so much, with the horrors of the war and even worse, his pain of an explosion that marred his life even more. He had moved west and set himself up in his own law office, with additional jobs of finding lost people and bounty hunter, only when necessary. With his scars from the far, he had little hope of anything more.

Stella had her own scars, outside and in, and she needed to find her brother so she could settle their father's estate since his passing. Her only hope was a telegraph she had received and she ended up in Abilene, Ks.

As these two are brought together, Harry agrees to help her find her brother. Secrets, suspense and an unexpected attraction builds, as Zina weaves history and her magical pen, to bring the old west to life. Such a wonderful start to this new series!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Zina Abbott! Filled with misunderstanding, doubts and plenty of twists and turns, it kept me entertained for the entire book. Well thought out characters kept the storyline moving along. It does have a second book to tie everything up neatly and hopefully with a HEA. JudyE

She is in search of her brother to help settle her father’s estate. She ends in Abilene for finding brother. There she meets a lawyer who also doubles as a detective and bounty hunter. Both of them suffer recurring nightmares. Her trauma was a brutal physical attack from a former beau. The attacker had beaten her and used a knife to cut her face. The lawyer suffered terrible scars when the steamer that was taking solders home, had boilers explode. The nightmares for him, kept taking him back into battle skirmishes. The lawyer finds her brother, and he will have to clear her brother of murder. Can he do it?

Her story is full of adventure, challenges and uncertainty. His is full of the same. Nightmares and injustice, drama and standoffish feelings they share. Seeking help she finds him. A wonderful story with interesting characters and written with intertwining of depth. Cant wait to read on!
