Adrift: The Storyteller and the Mosaicist Kindle Edition
Bernie remembers one icy day, years ago, when her mum and older sister left in the car for a journey they never came home from. Now she believes that being isolated is safer than loss.
But she is pulled into turmoil by the vulnerability of a prematurely born step-brother, and the potential for romance with mosaicist, Robin.
Against her own instincts, she pushes her father away to his new wife, and pushes Robin away into the arms of a mutual friend. But as she reaches the pinnacle of her desired isolation, she realises that she might have made a mistake. Can she learn to trust in a human connection that might just let her down?
From the writer of the ‘Engaging and Uplifting’ (Daily Mail) HELEN AND THE GRANDBEES, artist Alex Morrall explores themes of love and isolation in her novel, ADRIFT. Follow Bernie’s story from the coast to early 2000’s London.“I loved this poignant exploration of how events from our past can hold us back from enjoying the happiness we so deserve. Both Bernie and Robin are complex, nuanced characters which makes their story compelling and enjoyable.”Joanna Little, graduate of UEA’s Creative Writing MA, reader for flash fiction journal and literary competitions.
“A lovely, practically poetic novella which explores emotional attachment and the experiences which can sever such attachments... Character-driven in the most nuanced and empathetic way, this is a story which will make you think, will make you feel.” Bookstagrammer Bextwixtthepages

- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2022This is the first book by Alex Morrall I have read. I must say, the author has a very languid, pleasurable way of describing in detail the surroundings, the feelings and the emotions of her scenery and characters. It's a story that took me on a roller coaster. I wasn't quite sure if I wanted to get off at times, but then, I decided I didn't want to get off. I didn't always understand what was going on, but then, again, I wanted to understand what was going on. So I kept reading....till the end. I'm very glad I did.

Bernie goes through a lot of different emotions as she deals with a new step-brother and potential love interest. I thought it was interesting to see her dynamic with her family, the father she doesn't connect with anymore, and the mother-in-law she doesn't seem to connect with at all. What I was a little confused about was her love for Robin. I can see as the story progresses that she develops feelings for him, but for me, it never felt very concrete. I wanted more from her to show that. Otherwise, I thought that the book was interesting and entertaining.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2022The chorus of Bernie's story will resonate deeply with anyone who has experienced loss or trauma that can make vulnerability and trust so difficult. A beautiful, relatable story of love, loss, and resilience. I loved Helen and the Grandbees and can't wait to read more from Morrall.

It is one of those books that you can’t put down when you start to read it. It really highlights that emotions can come to the fore at unexpected times in unexpected circumstances. The story is gripping. Full credit to the author. Well done Alex Morrall.
