Adventures in Amethyst Series, Book 10: Blame it on the Rain (Adventures in Amethyst Contemporary Romance 7) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 2 ratings

Amethyst, WI is a small, peaceful town on a pristine lake with an active tourist season in summer. When the air turns chill, the area is transformed into a ghost town with only a handful of lifers who stay. Amethyst is bursting with mystery, romance, and jealousy all-year-round.

Talise "Tally" Johnson is the second youngest in a family of nine siblings, having grown up a lifer in the small town of Amethyst, where thousands of tourists flock in summer. Once the tourist season is over, the remaining residents do anything and everything to get through the long, hard winters. Tally's family owns Johnson Resort. Tally has managed to cultivate her job there to include professionally cleaning businesses all around the area throughout the year. Like most Amethyst lifers, she can't imagine ever moving, but Amethyst isn't exactly a hotbed for excitement. She and handsome bad boy Adam Schaefer have been an item since high school. Against all odds and despite being a reckless youth always in trouble, Adam is one of the few born and bred in Amethyst who have managed to get out into the big, wide world. As a pilot for a large commercial airline, he's barely home two weeks out of every year. Tally and Adam's informal engagement has stretched out into years and, seeing the happy couples getting engaged, married and starting families all around her, she begins to wonder if he's serious or simply sees her as a convenient stop on the never-ending tour of his life.

Donnie Garner's best friend Adam is easy to admire. Though they grew up together and got in the same fracas as boys, Adam has made something of himself. Donnie still lives in Amethyst, still works in his dad's vehicle repair shop with no other career aspirations, still loves the same girl he spent most of his teenage years obsessed with though she's happily married with kids. Donnie finds himself longing to experience the kind of loyalty and crazy-love with a soulmate that he also sees all around him. For once in his life, he'd like to be the hero in some amazing woman's life.

Donnie isn't blind to the shoddy way Adam treats beautiful and sweet Tally, cheating on her without remorse and bragging to him about it, while Tally carries on believing the best of him and his future intentions toward her. Almost unconsciously, Donnie finds himself in love with his best friend's girl and trying to make her see she'd be better off without Adam--maybe even better off with him. But, even when Tally falls in love with Donnie instead, she can't easily turn away from the father of the child she never expected to be carrying...

Tally Johnson is all about family, so she cannot imagine ever leaving Amethyst, the town she was born in. Her entire family is here. The family resort is here. And here is where Tally’s cleaning service business is booming. She and Adam Schaefer have been an item since high school. However, Adam’s first love in life is flying. This means he is away, only returning to Amethyst for 2 or 3 weeks out of the year. After eight years, Tally is beginning to wonder if Adam only sees her as a convenient stop.

Donnie Garner dated Tally in high school before Adam did. He has never fallen out of love with Tally and hates how Adam treats her. Tally has no idea that Adam has been cheating on her for most of those eight years (with multiple women.) Donnie knows because Adam brags about it to him. Donnie wants Tally for her own but does not believe he is good enough for her. Though he wants more, he is happy if Tally simply lets him be friends with her and see her every day – even if it is only to hear her moan about missing Adam. Unlike Adam, Donnie does not have big career aspirations. He works in his father’s garage.

Finally having had enough, Donnie begins trying to make Tally see that he is the better choice for her. Tally finds herself in the middle, caring for both Adam and Donnie, wondering which to choose. When Tally becomes pregnant and does not know which guy is the father, things get heated between the men … as if she does not have enough on her plate.

**** FOUR STARS! Wiesner not only creates likeable characters, but also give them flaws, making them more human, more realistic.

That Tally’s character remained faithful the eight years she dated Adam is something I find amazing. Few can boast such good behavior. Yet when she finally makes love with Donnie, she considers herself a slut and begins to really beat herself up over it. (Before and after she learns of Adam’s years of infidelities.) I see Tally’s character in a different light. As I said, I find it amazing she remained faithful for so long. That speaks volumes to me on how much she values her relationships. Not to mention how much she cares for her family and her wonderful work ethic.

Donnie and Adam’s lives could not have been more opposite. Adam lies so easily and convincingly, yet he really does intend to marry Tally … someday. Donnie keeps the truth of Adam’s cheating to himself so as not to hurt Tally. Hurting her is just unbearable to him.

The author mainly follows Tally and Donnie in Amethyst, but manages to give Adam face time and phone time. She shows how hectic a pilot’s life can be, especially if one is trying to climb in rank. This triangle relationship is more complex than most I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about it. Brava! ****

“BLAME IT ON THE RAIN, Book 10 of the Adventures in Amethyst Series, is Tally Johnson’s story. With a very large family, she’s a lifer in the small resort town of Amethyst, WI. Tally has a long distance love affair with Adam Schaefer, an airline pilot who can only be there for a day or two before he has to return to his job. His absence leaves her lonely, missing him, and wondering if their love is really meant to be. She waited patiently for years, watching every other couple get married and start a family. Often, she goes to best friend, Donnie, who will do anything for her. Whenever Tally says she needs him, Donnie Garner drops everything for her. Tally is his best friend and he'd do anything to make her happy. BLAME IT ON THE RAIN is a feel-good story that left me wanting more and needing to know what happens next in Amethyst.”
