Adventures in Amethyst Series, Book 9: Forbidden Fruit (Adventures in Amethyst Contemporary Romance 6) Kindle Edition

5.0 out of 5 stars 2 ratings

Amethyst, WI is a small, peaceful town on a pristine lake with an active tourist season in summer. When the air turns chill, the area is transformed into a ghost town with only a handful of lifers who stay. Amethyst is bursting with mystery, romance, and jealousy all-year-round.

Rich and superficial, Apple Wooten knows best that she's wasted her life, in and out of rehab, betraying those she considers friends, and never forming attachments with anyone but her unhealthily cloistered family. When her brother shocks all of them by announcing he's leaving the Wooten Law Firm in New York City and moving to Amethyst, Wisconsin, a mere blip on the map, to marry a small town girl, Apple is prodded by her mother to rush in and talk sense into him. Though it's the last thing she wants to do considering she's just been released from another rehabilitation she doesn't expect to stick and Amethyst is the hometown of a friend she all but destroyed with her selfishness, she nevertheless sees no way to avoid her mother's bidding. She'd never been able to refuse her parents anything--and not simply because they control the purse strings.

The one person in Amethyst who will give her the time of day is Bailey "Bay" Johnson, who also went into the family business. The Johnsons own a slew of resort cabins on Lake Amethyst and, during the tourist season, they do brisk, bustling business. Apple had met Bailey years ago, the first time she ever came to Amethyst, when she'd ordered him around and all but made him her servant. Bailey didn't seem bothered by her cruel teasing then, just as he doesn't seem to be affected by her humbled, fumbling attempts at kindness now.

As the youngest of nine siblings in a close-knit family, Bailey has learned that acceptance is far easier than fighting. Unfortunately, a bad experience with love when he was young also taught him that folding is preferable to holding because reaching for forbidden fruit like the treacherous, beautiful disaster, and--recently--child-like and fragile Apple Wooten could be the worst mistake he's ever made.

Editorial Reviews

Review

5 Stars! "Have tissues in handbecause there is a lot of soul-searching and crying in this hard-core storythat deals with drugs, alcohol, neglect, and betrayals. There are a few otherthings from Apple's past coming back to haunt her that I won't mention, butthey add a bit more drama to the story. If you can put yourself in Apple'sshoes and honestly feel her regret, you will tear up several times as the storyflows around you. Apple's family and Bay's family are polar opposites. WhereApple's parents only used her, Bay's family is close-knit, though temporarilyin a sibling fight. When Bailey's family gets together, you can feel the warmthand comaraderie. Wiesner writes in a sneaky way. The emotions flowed through mewith no warning, leaving me at the mercy of her imagination. Thank goodness shebelieves in happily-ever-afters." ~Huntress Reviews huntressreviews.com/

Apollonia “Apple” Wooten knows that she has wasted her life, in and out of rehab, doing horrible things to nice people, and dealing (or rather, not dealing) with her dysfunctional family. Her mother pulls her out of rehab (that seemed to be working this time) and orders Apple to travel to Amethyst, Wisconsin, where her brother, Clay, is happily married. Since Clay left the family of wealthy lawyers to marry a hick girl, Harper, her mother has been biding her time. Now Apple has orders to bring him home and back to the law firm, preferably without the wife. Unable to deny the tyrannical rule of the mother who holds the purse strings, Apple obeys.

Apple calls Bailey “Bay” Johnson to rent a lake cabin from his family business. The Johnsons own a bunch of resort cabins on Lake Amethyst. However, all cabins are booked. Desperate, Apple agrees to rent the cabin that Bailey is still working on. Bay is the only person in town that will give Apple the time of day. She is grateful for that, considering how awful she treated him last time she was in the area. Once in town, Apple puts off calling on Clay and does some serious soul-searching, something she began in rehab. As she procrastinates, Apple begins helping Bay fix the cabin. During this time together, Apple begins to really get to know Bailey – and herself.

Bailey is the youngest of nine siblings in a close-knit family. But when his father died and left the entire family business only to him, his angry siblings left, even though Bay informed that the family business would remain the “family” business and not just his. With only the help of one sister, Tally, Bay is determined to expand the business and send his siblings their monetary part as proof to his words. Though Apple was not considered as part of his plans, Bailey feels unable to turn her away. However, the spoiled, drugged up, drunk, rich girl has changed, seemingly for the better. As Bay begins to fall for her, he wonders if the fragile Apple should remain forbidden fruit or if he should simply accept the gift he has been given.

***** FIVE STARS! Have tissues in hand because there is a lot of soul-searching and crying in this hard-core story that deals with drugs, alcohol, neglect, and betrayals. There are a few other things from Apple’s past coming back to haunt her that I do not mention. They add a bit more drama to the story. If you can put yourself in Apple’s shoes and honest feel her regret, you will tear up several times as the story flows around you.

Apple’s family and Bay’s family are polar opposites. Where Apple’s parents only used her, Bay’s family is close-knit, though temporarily in a sibling fight. When Bailey’s family gets together, you can feel the warmth and comradery.

Wiesner writes in a sneaky way. The emotions flowed through me with no waring, leaving me at the mercy of her imagination. Thank goodness she believes in happily-ever-afters. *****

    |Forbidden Fruit, Book 9 of the Adventures in Amethyst Series, is Apple Wooten's story. After being pampered all of her life by nannies, her older brother Clay became her guardian once he was old enough, since their parents were never there for them. Her last rehab was working, she was finally getting herself together, when her mother pulled her out, insisting she got to Clay in Amethyst, WI, where he settled down with his new bride Harper. Apple’s orders were to bring him back to New York by any means necessary! I liked that Apple was so hesitant to do her mother’s dirty work, especially once she saw how happy Clay was with a baby on the way. I had to give Bay kudos for unconsciously waiting for Apple for so long, certain she was the one for him. I loved how he called her ‘Barbie Doll’ and how he protected her against her own naivete in a world she had no skills to navigate on her own.”
