Waking up in the hospital was not on my list of things to do but finding my true mate makes it worth the pain. About the author

Toby Wise is a stay at home parent who hails from a tiny town in Wisconsin. Contrary to popular Wisconsin stereotypes, he’s not a cheese-head who loves football but rather an introvert who spends all his time on the internet, drinking coffee, spending time with his kid, and cooing about his adorable cat, Pikachu.
In April of 2019, A Collection of Strays was born after the world of fanfiction drew him back into his love of writing. Now he’s writing all things omegaverse as long as it includes silly moments and found family.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2020While this may not be five star writing or a five star romance, I have been waiting for some more role reversal in A/B/O settings, and this adds some additional of my favorite tropes. Hence my personal reaction is I enjoyed the heck out of this fluffy, quick, and sweet strong, older Omega with a family finding a fated mate in a somewhat abused, younger alpha. I loved the inclusion of a human(ish) child in the mixed shifter family, and the range of characters in the children.
It’s Omegaverse fluff, but it’s my kind of onegaverse fluff.
The biggest critique is it moves so quickly (it’s a novella) that most developments are given short shrift and move at lightning speed. If you just accept quick, fated mate romances with just jump into most serious and sexy developments with a line or two, it reads as quick and escapist (rather than eye-rollingly fast and simple).
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2025I really liked this book. It was cute quick read. 4 stars for rating, 3 for spice. The family Dakota built is amazing, and it gets even better with the addition of Charlie.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2022I needed this sweet book after the read I just had. I like how the omega is the strong older one. This was the insta love mate book. - Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2019This was such an amazing read. I loved the age difference and all of the kids that the Omega had...Each one different and special in their own way. I loved how Charlie just opened his heart to them all, and how he just followed his omega's lead when it came to the family. This book was different but so well written and showed so much love of family and mates. There was a lot of humor that I absolutely loved, great feel good emotions, not a lot of conflict or angst....just a really well written and well developed read. I'm definitely looking for more from this author and this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2022This is a mm shifter romance with mpreg, the first in a series that should be read in order. This does have some of the typical aspects of shifter mating like insta-love, heat bonding and in this case, mpreg but it had its unique characteristics too. This author has an interesting writing style, a certain unique way of wording things that you will enjoy once you get used to it. There wasn’t a lot of angst in this story but it was still enjoyable and sweet!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2024I loved that way more than I expected to. This was a first read from this author and I’m already in love with this adorable made family. Can’t wait to read on and see what they get up to.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2020This was such a wonderfully heartwarming story about love and family! I enjoyed every bit of it (which is rare for me because I don't typically do happy endings lol). My absolute favorite thing about the book is that there is such a diverse cast of characters. As a non-binary person, I really enjoyed reading a book with a non-binary character. Honestly, it's great to know an author that is writing queer friendly literature that isn't only friendly to certain parts of the queer community. I have already recommended this to all of my friends. Fantastic job, Toby! <3
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2022This is a fairly light-hearted story of a family of misfit shifters whose "dad" finally finds his alpha mate and ultimate happiness.
You need to be prepared to blindly set reality aside to accept some of the premises presented (like a male omega wolf birthing a baby), but the depth of the related emotions will let you accept the unlikely and believe.
If you're not into a lot of mushy affection described in your reading, this book may not be for you. But it is a touching story of family and loving relationships, even if they are a bit mis-matched.

A cute and fun quick read with plenty of sweetness, sass and heat! If you like books with strong themes of acceptance, love and found family then this is definitely one for you. A great debut novella and I can't wait for more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Charlie and Dakota!
Such a great family dynamic between Dakota and his kids. Love how Charlie was accepted so easily. Also love Cameron and is sassy little ass.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great start to the series
This was a fun and sweet read. I loved the alternating POV, and how the characters interacted. Dakota and his found family were wonderful to read about, and Charlie fit in so well. It wasn't quite long enough or had enough depth to get a 5 star rating from me, but otherwise it was a great read and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dakota and Charlie
I really enjoyed reading this book. It is such a sweet story about caring and to let other persons be, who they are. And an a....e of father, who can't accept his son like he is. I'll want to read the next book too, that's for sure. I recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting start
I enjoyed this book.
Dakota and Charlie were very sweet with each other. I loved how they are different than more conventional alpha and omega types and how by being together they slowly embraced their differences.
I loved all the kids and I can't wait for their stories
