Agent Zero: A Snarky Urban Fantasy Romance (Region Two Urban Fantasy Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 107 ratings

He masters fileting fish. She’s skilled at taking down monsters. Will their instant attraction put them dangerously high on a scaly creature’s radar?

Celebrity chef Bruce Kantor isn’t known as “The Bastard” for nothing. And after his short fuse explodes on the job, he rage-quits yet another gig and wanders into a local karaoke bar in search of some liquid consolation. But when his walk home is ambushed by a sharp-toothed creature, he’s shocked when the beautiful singer he was eyeing from his barstool springs to his rescue.

Vee Ramirez plays as hard as she works. So the Company's commanding officer gladly mixes up her rare downtime by belting out tequila-fueled tunes… until she spots a vicious beast stalking a hapless civilian for supper. But when the dragon-like being evades her counterattack, she has no choice but to cart away the ungrateful citizen and secure him at her carefully hidden compound.

Refusing to play helpless damsel to the fierce fighter and her team, Bruce struggles to adapt to a lifestyle way less luxurious than he’s used to—and his growing hots for a woman his polar opposite. And though she’s confused by how easily she bonds with the grumpy outsider, Vee tries to refocus on her mission of protecting innocent humans.

Is their scorching passion at risk of extinction from an invasion of ghastly ghouls?

Agent Zero is the punch-packed first book in the Region Two urban fantasy series. If you like kickass heroines, sizzling hot romance, and edge-of-your-seat action, then you’ll love Janet Walden-West’s banter-filled adventure.

Their romance is at once banter-y and intense, filled with the emotional depth and crackling chemistry that makes their story a joy to get lost in from the first encounter to the final payoff. Add in steamy love scenes and a phenomenal cast of side characters with multi-dimensional stories of their own, and we have a winner.

Agent Zero satisfies by bringing the beloved tropes that define the urban fantasy genre while injecting it with fresh energy through new twists and unique, unforgettable characters. Both Bruce and Vee are dynamic, compelling leads with complex personalities and internal struggles. Their romance is at once banter-y and intense, filled with the emotional depth and crackling chemistry that makes their story a joy to get lost in from the first encounter to the final payoff. What I loved most about this story was how quickly the team members came to life in my mind. Vee, Liv, Kimi, and Josh are multifaceted, believable, and expert at their jobs. Their interactions and relationships ring true. I enjoyed getting to know each one as the story evolved. The outsider, Bruce, is as intense, direct, and intelligent as Vee, the team's CO. Their relationship begins with respectful curiosity, morphs into friendship and intimacy, and moves forward naturally through their wonderfully nuanced interactions. The ending is excellent.

I started reading this book because the blurb said that it was snarky which I interpreted to mean humorous. It was not! However, it had an exceedingly unexpected depth with well developed characters and a great plot. I want to read more.

This was my first book by this author. What a wonderful find!
This is a wonderful Urban Fantasy Romance. I will not post spoilers here but will absolutely  recommend reading this book.
Bruce is a Gordon Ramsy type of chef who runs afoul of a nasty cryptid that marks him to make him dinner. Luckily for him there are some Cryptid hunters in the bar he was marked in.
Follow Bruce as he learns about a world he never knew existed, as he watches a found family and an incredible woman.
There were like 2 sex scenes in here and they were tastefully written, The language was not off putting. No GD's and just a few JFC's- which kinda fit the moments coming from a Jewish character.
I plan to move onto Book #2- I like the alternate world building here. The character development. There is good action here and it is a wonderful read.
I would highly recommend this book and if you like Romance Novels with a plot- this one is for you.

This was a unique book that threw a gender bender in there - even though it really didn’t. Ramirez is the CO of top secret government company, but her character, attitude and loyalty are generally what authors ascribe to military male protagonists - and Bruce fit nicely in the naive civilian category, where many female protagonists fall in those same stories. It was rather lovely.

Well written, it’s a stand alone romance that edges on paranormal, considering the cryptids , but I doubt any of the characters would agree.

Wow, I don’t even know where to start! Terrific worldbuilding, characters, action, romance and spice, complications, emotional arcs, and so , so much snark! I can’t wait to dive into book 2!

Hot, successful man that cooks with a serious a-hole attitude and a sweet heart hidden underneath. Bada*s, caring commander of a secret agent group that saves civilians from the monsters that go bump at night... or even in the day! Combine those together and you have sparks flying with these intense, and engaging characters.
Warnings: strong language, violence, awesome naughty chemistry, and a craving to taste that homemade pudding! Maybe the author should be including a recipe extra with this one.

Loved the book, Janet grips you from the very beginning and you will think about the story constantly urging you to finish reading!

I really enjoyed the characters in this story! They had flaws & it was interesting how they used those flaws to make the story successful. I also really enjoyed the Sci-fi details if the story and the way those components affected the characters in the story!

    Great story.
Sci-Fi fans will love this, it really comes alive, with “civies” details, like the market, old deserted desert attraction, how the team sets up Road/area closures and explains “what happened”. Another great attention getting/holding series starter by Janet Walden-West!

The dynamic between the characters is obvious from the start and then comes Bruce. He's the biggest pain but intriguing to watch. Throw battling monsters and a famous moody chef into the mix and you get plenty of action from all angles. Worth reading just to find out if anyone can put up with Chef Bruce.

Bruce is a chef who is quite a Diva, complete with a foul temper to go with his colossal ego. after walking out on his latest job he enters a bar and is blown away by a karaoke singer who can’t carry a tune. Unfortunately he is also accosted by a cryptid, a new monster that decides he is her prey. Luckily for Bruce, the karaoke singer is better at saving lives and hunting monsters than singing.

I got engrossed, mind, heart and soul, in this story! Cried more than once!
Bruce is such an anti-hero and his mental state changes so many times I had whip lash but I still loved him! And Vee and her team are supremely awesome!
You really don't want to miss this one.
Brilliant start to a new series with the most amazing world building!
    Highly recommendef.

3.0 out of 5 stars A different concept
Reviewed in Australia on November 20, 2022
The value in this book is the role reversal. She's is the warrior and protector and he is the creative civilian with an arrogant streak. I'm not sure I'm committed enough to continue though.
