- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2016Not One Step Back continues the adventures of Captain Daniel Marshall and the crew of the Battlecruiser Alamo and I found it to be an entertaining book. Between the likeable characters and action-packed plot, Not One Step Back took me to the wild frontier of human space and had me on the edge of my seat right until the end. In this adventure, Alamo's crew and Captain are tasked to continue to find leads on the Cabal and to find the missing Hercules. Before heading out on their main mission, Fleet has tasked them to clean out an infestation of pirates near Spitfire Station. Once again Marshall and his crew face all kinds of threats to life and limb and make a few intriguing discoveries that lead them in new directions with regards to the Cabal. I really like Tongue's style of writing - the fast-paced style, great characters plot-lines are guaranteed to keep readers engaged, as the threads of the over-arching story unfold. This is solid sci-fi fare that reminds me of the kind of books I read and loved when I was in my teens - Heinlein's juvenile series, Andre Norton, Hugh Walters and others.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2016I have been reading this one book at a time and here I am at book {is it 6??)
Anyhow , the story is quite good. Nice battles both in space and on the planets.
What loses the star for me is the type errors which seem to of become worse as the tale moves on.
Even so I will continue to read the story and if you are looking for a good sci fi read then this is a good buy
and certainly worth the money.
If you would like to read a tale which is a little better then read {My opinion} Flagship by Isaac Hooke
or The Frontiers saga by Ryk Brown. These are also very good or maybe a little better depending on taste.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2014I wanted to give this thing a four star rating because there was really no reason for this ship not to have a couple star fighters on board her. After all they essentially built on out of spare parts and picked up another two for scrap prices. It seems that when it comes to space fighters this crew isn't trying hard enough. Why? Because of the old military maxim, if you aren't cheating you aren't trying and I saw no signs of cheating going on.
Other than that, this is a really good book. The ship and her crew is growing and in some cases that means they are growing out of their roles on the Alamo. Partings are such sweet sorrow. But in any case there was everything we've come to love and very little of what we've come to hate in this series. Space fights, ship to ship battles and inter corridor pistol play with a bunch of baddie gun thugs, its all there.
As always my only real complaint (other than those blasted fighters they aren't cheating to keep their hands on dang them) is that the books should really be twice as long.
The Deposed King
- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2014I find the characters in Tongue's work to be interesting and believable. The tale develops well and he does a marvelous thing, he ends each story within the book, while maintaining a larger story arc tying episodes together and maintaining interest. Good on. Cheers
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2015great read, plenty of action, some new characters and some characters moving out of the story arc. Good read and starting the next.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2014Well done! The story has a brisk pace with twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. There are a few typos but definitely worth the read. Can't wait for #6!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2014It is entertaining but it is getting old having to figure out what the real word is supposed to be after autocorrect puts in its word. Like "world" would be the correct word for the sentence and the intent, I hope, but instead the printed word is "would". That is an easy example and it is prevalent throughout the series. You think an editor or proof reader would have caught most of these.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2014This book was very well written and I can't wait until the next one. The author does an excellent job with the plot and the characters. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tightly written.
I enjoy tales told with respect for Newton!
The authour keeps to the possibilities, yet gets the mix of boredom and excitement across, very well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another chapter
I have been following this series since the first book and very much like the mixture. It reminds me much of my favorite SciFi series Star Trek and Babylon 5. Much more gritty feel than either of those, much more for the mature reader than Star Trek.
The characters devlop nicely over the books and so far I havent encountered a single book that didnt leave me looking for the next installment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous
What can you say, each book in the series is better than the last. Mr Tongue provides a real scenario, so easy to fall in and you won't want to come out.

4.0 out of 5 stars ABRO
This is another good read, I liked the speed of the plot and the characters are credible. Shame that the English is not 100% but hey! Call me old fashioned. I will follow this series if it keeps to this standard. Enjoy!
