Alice in Monologue Land (Alice Chronicles Book 3) Kindle Edition

3.6 out of 5 stars 68 ratings

A fun, light, adventure-filled novel full of real women with curves and stage fright. A balance of humor, mystery, and romance.
When adjunct English instructor Alice Chalmers gets roped into reading a part in an upcoming campus production of The Venus Monologues, her life spirals out of control. The teaching job of her dreams is open, but the staid hiring committee won't appreciate seeing her on stage discussing the “V-word.” Pressured by her dean to perform, Alice is in monologue hell. When she calls the production "The Venomous Mambas" or "The Viral Meningitis," her children howl. But Alice has more pressing problems: some of her female students are disappearing.
At monologue practices, Alice meets the Venus Warriors, a fearless group of college women who cheerfully dish on men, menstruation, and menopause while bonding through skydiving and workshops where ALL things feminine are explored. Add an odd trio of men who long to explore all things feminine with Alice, starting with her lips and moving toward her monologue zone. But seriously: A snake-loving professor in Birkenstocks? A chain-smoking student with a chin mole? Or a too-young Colombian coffee god? The choice makes her head hurt.
Things get rough when someone sabotages the monologues with loose stage wires and poisoned brownies. But when one female student is found dead and another is in peril, the Venus Warriors fly to the rescue, and Alice skydives smack into an alligator's nest of answers.

Review

"I so enjoyed Alice in Monologue Land. This was an exceptional read and I read it from cover to cover in just a few days. Author Amy Gettinger has done a fantastic job in creating characters that are funny, intriguing and exciting, sometimes all at once. The story is truly laugh out loud funny at times, and in one scene I actually laughed until I had tears in my eyes. Alice in Monologue Land is a book that would be enjoyed by any reader who enjoys a book with a fun female lead, a book with a little mystery, a little suspense and a little romance all wrapped in one, or just a plain good book. I certainly hope that Amy Gettinger is working on her next novel in this same vein, because I, for one, will be eagerly waiting to read it!" ~ Tracy Slowiak for Readers' Favorite"A fun-loving read, perfect to bring sunshine to even the cloudiest day, Ms. Gettinger lets us know it is okay to laugh at ourselves, just in case we can identify with Alice and that reading less than lofty tomes brings a certain sparkle and shine to the literary world. I might suggest you hang on tight, this tale has more spins than a tilt-a-whirl." ~ Dianne Bylo, Tome Tender Blogger"Wittily entertaining, "Alice in Monologue Land"is for the notso-perfect, second-chance woman in waiting. Forever quirky and witty, it is not for thefaint of heart as the monologues revolve around the "V" word. Alice is an endearing characterwho many readers will quickly relate to. This modern day romance-mystery willkeep readers engaged to unravel the mystery and see how Alice's train wrecklife keeps evolving." ~ In D'Tale Magazine

"Alice in Monologue Land" is a terrific beach read for the reader (especially if one is female!) who enjoys fantasy and wants to experience (vicariously) an at-risk, hectic, yet fulfilling lifestyle!
Alice reflects perfectly the working woman with whom we can all identify...tight budgets/raising three youngsters--each with their own personality/a know-it-all sister/and a mother who lives in a parallel universe. And then there are the men! Each with their own agenda. Each with their own sexual pursuits. Through it all Alice keeps her focus, exhibits an understanding of herself and her family, and a true compassion for her students.
Humorous! Intrigue!! A bit of 007! Shocking experiences! Love Interests! Alice embraces all scenarios, regardless of time or place. (And they are varied and interesting!) For a fun read, escape to "Alice in Monologue Land". She's ready to take you on an adventure! Review by R.K. Holcomb

Alice and her charming ragtag band of friends, family members, and even enemies take a romp through a veritable melange of women's issues while taking on Kali, sex trafficking, murder, and the mafia. It gets a little messy at times and it's frequently difficult to tell all the characters apart, but it's worth the mess for the honesty and humor that tag along. I recommend this book and will look for more from this author.

I liked the concept of this story, but there were some times where the author confused me. For example, there was a time where a character that had not been written into a scene suddenly appeared. Overall though, good concept and interesting story.

If I didn't want to be able to contribute to a book club discussion, I would have stopped reading this book very early on but I soldiered through and just found it to be trying. It is a book for people who love to use exclamation points!!!!! It's way too over the top and full of stereotypes. The manic-style writing and poor character development don't help. I suppose the author was going for a humorous way to touch on subjects that can be uncomfortable for some but for me, she missed by several hundred miles. I appear to be in the minority in my opinion but I paid for this schlock.

Alice works three part-time jobs as an ESL instructor at three different community colleges. Female students have been going missing. Alice is determined to get at the bottom of it. Meanwhile she is dragged into a monologue play and is being pursued by three men. Fun and adventure!

Be prepared for a lot of erotic words and not a lot of sense. I quit after the first dozen pages, so can't comment on the story as a whole.
