This is a great read, the best yet by this author. A well written psychological thriller, partially set in Cape Town, SA, that keeps one gripped until the well disguised end that comes as a complete surprise. It is full of nuances that promotes thought that one is required to read it twice to fully appreciate and understand its depth.
A book for all genders. thoroughly enjoyable.
Cannot wait for the third novel in the Toni Mendez series.

‘Alice’ is one of those books that surprises, engages and takes the reader off in unexpected directions. It is the story of a young woman trapped in an awful marriage. When she decides she can take no more and leaves, her life becomes one of secrets, new friends and a fight to keep her new found freedom. Sam Skyborne made me feel an affinity with Alice. I felt as if I was along for the ride and worried about her as she became more involved in her new life in Cape Town. A PI, Toni Mendez, is sent to track her down and her part in the story opened up a whole lot of other issues. This book had so many layers and was intelligently plotted. I could never have guessed the twists and turns and I take my hat off to the author. Bravo!

I was given this ARC for review.

This has got to be Sam Skyborne's best book yet. She has a way of using words to paint enormous landscapes across a story.
This time she puts the MC, Alice, in Cape Town, South Africa and uses the setting to allow her to find herself. It is obviously an area that Sam Skyborne knows well as we can even smell the sea! We accompany Alice on her on trips to the beach, shopping, working and helping the local people (I don't want to say too much as it will spoil the story). But the characters that Alice meets in each of the places are both interesting and each dealing with the naivety that Alice has in different ways.

It has a very well thought through story and has an ending which is such a surprise, I defy you to expect it :). I really enjoyed it all!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gripping Read

I loved this book! A really compelling and original plot, full of twists and turns that you won't see coming. Most of the action takes place in Cape Town, SA, and the writer really brings the city, culture and landscape to life throughout the novel. The characters are well-drawn and develop in really interesting ways - I found myself very quickly invested in their fate and keen to read the book as quickly as possible to find out what happens to them! This book is an excellent, character-driven thriller that will keep you guessing right up until the last page!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another great book

This much anticipated new book by Sam Skyborne doesn’t disappoint. The unfolding adventures of Alice on her flight to freedom kept me hooked, wanting to find out what was around the next corner for our brave heroine. The story keeps you guessing and there is one hell’uv a twist in store.
Once again, the sensuous interludes are carefully woven into the storyline, making for a satisfying and pleasurable read. Once again these interludes are some of the most skillfully written sex scenes I have come across. The realism (whilst not going so far as problems with bra straps and crumbs in the bed!) makes them relatable and all the more erotic because of that.
Alice shows a development in the depth and maturity of Sam’s writing – ‘Like a surgeons knife on soft skin, the car cleaved a slow, cautious, red dusty line along the track..’ - descriptions of places and scenes of South Africa are alluring and colourful.
It’s a joy to catch up on Lizbeth’s and Toni’s relationship with the added mystery of what’s in store for them…
Sam Skyborne is a boon to the genre of lesbian erotic writing, but it would be a disservice to limit it to this niche – Sam’s books are a focus on an exciting story and ideas, rather than just sex and romance. I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait for the next!

I loved reading Simulation and Risk by this author, and what can I say- Alice was another fabulous read and a book I couldn’t put down! I was continuously gripped, and curious how the story would unfold. There are brilliant twists and turns in this book and, wow, I certainly couldn’t have predicted the ending. Very cleverly and beautifully written and thoroughly enjoyable! And it’s made me want to visit South Africa.
I will certainly be looking out for more books from this author!

I thoroughly enjoyed 'Alice' from start to finish. It is a compelling, can't-put-it-down read. I have been waiting for more from this author since the last book, and this one does not disappoint. The characters are rich, the plot full of suspense and intrigue and the twists and turns of the story are very cleverly put together. All in all a very well written novel which I will read time and time again.
