All the Way Strong Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 7 ratings

I can’t go back. I can’t change things. I can’t let them see my pain.

Rain, wind, heat, or snow, high school junior Olivia Bennett is used to running no matter the circumstance. Even when the pain in her knee causes her to slow down, she still competes against herself every cross-country meet. That’s what she trained herself to do.

Until one day, the pain is too unbearable to hide from her coach. Forced to stop running until she’s cleared by a doctor, one visit with her primary care physician quickly turns into multiple visits to the hospital. When a devastating diagnosis is reached, the idea of running again slips from her grasp.

While deciding whether to fight for her past or embrace an uncertain future, Olivia does her best to focus on normal life, hoping she won’t lose more of herself along the way.

Celeste Joan Hackmann always enjoyed reading. When presented with the opportunity to write her own story in third grade, she jumped at it. Writing ever since then, Celeste has created a contemporary world of her own to share with the world she lives in.

From the best friendships, to family issues, to unhealthy relationships, Celeste dives into the shoes of each character (from main character to side character) and approaches each topic with the care it deserves.

Having taught high school for 30 years, I've always enjoyed YA novels. This author does a great job exploring the characters, and I found the dialogue to be expertly written. I was pulled in from the very first page, and was equally as engrossed to the last page. I strongly recommend this book for young adults, as well as old farts like me.

This is a fantastic YA novel that will appeal to readers of all ages. As a runner, I appreciate the details of the races as well as the mindset of runners. This is also a great lesson in overcoming obstacles.
From a technical standpoint, this is a well written story in which all the characters have depth.

A compelling story of a runner who overcomes adversity

Even though this may have been geared towards young adults, I feel this story is for adults of all ages.
I had a similar situation as the main character. I had a tumor on my leg, where if it was cancerous their was potential of amputation. Forty plus years later I still have my leg and the grapefruit size tumor was benign.

All characters in this book were very well developed and I felt I connected with each character. The story is very laid out showing the raw emotions and
frustrations Olivia faced with her health battles. It is tough when life doesn’t go as plan, especially when your life can change in a moment.

Ms Hackman started this story as a young teenager and finished up the story as a young adult. I was impressed with it being her first novel how well written it was and how i wanted to keep on reading. I stayed up late several nights as I had a hard time putting it down. I know Ms Hackman from a distance as her older brother was friends/classmate with my daughter. I could see her brother intermixed with a few of the male characters.

I cannot wait to read her next novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing debut!

All the Way Strong is the first contemporary YA novel I’ve read in years - and it pulled me right back in and showed me everything I loved about the genre.

The author, Celeste Joan Hackman, has done a fabulous job in creating a realistic setting in an American high school, while going deep enough into the traumatic events and their effects to know she’s done her homework. I have not personally been through what Olivia, the main character, goes through, but from an outsider view it seems realistic, heart breaking and well explained.

The characters in the books, Olivia, Finn and Ian in particular, have grown on me and I consider them my friends at this point. They’re relatable, funny but real and complex at the same time. They, like the other character, felt like real people.

This book has made me cry more times than I can count on one hand, and I’m sure it would hold up the second time around, or the third.

Celeste Joan has published a brilliant debut with All the Way Strong, and I can’t wait to see where her next books take her characters.

(I got an early copy to proofread for Celeste)
