Allerdale: Confirmed Bachelors Book 1 Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 2,507 ratings

Although this is the first of my Confirmed Bachelors series and can be read as a standalone, Allerdale follows on directly from my Miss Wolfraston's Ladies series and he first appears in Georgianna, book 3 of that series.

Handsome and charismatic, Miles Gilham, Earl of Allerdale, has a reputation for being a little wild. After spending months running his father’s estate in Yorkshire to make amends for disgracing his family the year before, he reluctantly returns to Town. He has promised his mother that he will find a bride this season, but his heart is not in it. The only eligible lady that amuses him is not looking for a husband and is the sort of headstrong girl that would make an uncomfortable wife.

After her diplomat father dies, Eleanor Edgcott returns to England heartbroken. When her mourning period is over, her cousin, Lord Haverham, brings her to Town for the season. She finds herself interested in everything and everyone about her. Between trying to plan her future, keeping Diana, Lady Haverham from the clutches of a rake, and trying to help a lovelorn couple, she finds herself with very little time for reflection.

She is drawn to Lord Allerdale but soon realises that he is the last person to meet the list of requirements she has drawn up for a husband. Circumstances draw them together, however, and just when they discover that they share a very special connection, an event occurs that threatens to ruin any chance of happiness they may have.

I live by the sea in Plymouth, England, with my partner Dave. I like reading, sailing, and exploring in our camper van. I love getting up early to watch the sunrise in summer, and long quiet evenings by the wood burner in our cabin on the cliffs in Cornwall in winter.

I write traditional Regency romance novels that respect the mores of the era. I like to think my characters, though flawed, are likeable, strong, and true to the period.

I love reading historical novels, especially those of the Regency period. This is an author I have not encountered before, but the story was well- conceived and the characters well-formed and entertaining. I wish I had read any of her earlier books including these characters, though, as I felt I had arrived in the middle of the play. I will definitely look for more of her novels.

I thoroughly enjoyed Allerdale. The writing style is elegant, with excellent dialog and character development. I liked both Eleanor and Miles, finding their romance believable and appealing. This is a lovely traditional Regency. While this seems to be the first book in a new series, I think some of the characters may have stories of their own that I can enjoy! I'm eager to read more of this author's work.

I loved this book! The main characters were so likable, especially the heroine, Eleanor. She was strong, independent and fiercely protective of her family and friends. I especially loved how the story operated within the mores of the times. It was historically accurate and the romance didn’t devolve into the crass, slimy, 21st century sex template found in so many unbelievable regency romances. The female protagonist in this story had a brain for once.

My first experience with this author. I enjoyed it. The romance kind of went from friendship to proposal at an alarming rate. There were also A Lot of side characters. I had a hard time remembering who we were talking about sometimes. I would read more by her.
Content: clean, a couple of kisses.

I have really enjoyed several of this author’s books, but this one missed the mark. The author spent a full third of the book before even introducing the two main characters to each other. The book was half way through before their first conversation. Seriously? Too much time was spent on side characters. It was like a revolving door—every chapter brought the introduction to new characters and different side stories with rambling sub-plots. The main characters hardly had any involvement with each other until the final few chapters of the book. While the character development was good for a book with so many characters, it was done at the expense of interactions between the hero and heroine. On top of that, the author would like me to believe that the main characters have fallen deeply in love, yet hardly ever had any conversations with each other. Really? If I had read this book first, I probably would never have read any of the author’s other works. This book was a real disappointment, especially since most of her other works are terrific. Sorry this book was all plot and very little romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant writing - slow plot
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 16, 2024
The writing in this book is undeniably brilliant and overall, it was an enjoyable read. However, I found myself growing a bit weary of Ash's character/ghost, and even Leo's constant infatuation from the beginning felt too predictable. Georgiana was always going to be a tough act to follow—she was daring and captivating, making her an interesting lead. Isabel, on the other hand, had potential but ended up feeling a bit bland. Her love for Leo also seemed to lack a strong foundation, which made their relationship less compelling.

How can predictable characters, typical attitudes and situations, and time-honoured twists add up to a perfectly delightful ramble in sparkling company, at the right pace and for the ideal amount of time? This author has managed the magic.

I'm nearly at the end of this and off to read book 2 soon. Just thought I would give a review because I am really enjoying it. It is romance with a touch of action and intrigue, so if that is what you would like to read, Go For It!
