Home Is Where You Are (The Alphas' Homestead Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 295 ratings

By the winter of 1870, Caleb Fletcher has carved out a sheltered existence for himself in a simple cabin, outside a small town in the backwaters of Nebraska, resigned to living out his days as a solitary wolf. But his quiet life is interrupted when another werewolf lands on his doorstep on the eve of a snowstorm, brutalized almost beyond repair, with nowhere else to turn.

When Caleb reluctantly welcomes Jacob into his cabin, and eventually his bed, it forces him to face up to the traumas he’s been running from; the shame that made him leave his pack behind, and the horrors of war he endured.

As the weeks pass, it seems that Jacob’s arrival might not be the coincidence it first appeared. Jacob has an agenda. One that involves Caleb. And if Caleb agrees to it – if he can let go of his past and his prejudices – it will change Caleb’s whole world. Maybe even for the better.

Without a mate – a family, a pack – a wolf has no home.

But what if home finds you?

NB - 18 Aug 2019. Made some minor proofing corrections to bring the book in line with the rest in the series. The story remains entirely the same with only a few words changed here and there.

After spending years creating stories in her head, Alex started writing them down and then found she couldn’t stop. Despite the late start, she now writes m/m romance about found families, sometimes with an historical feel—and the occasional werewolf.

Free from aspirations of literary greatness, Alex simply hopes to spin a good yarn of love and life, wrapped up with a happy ending. And if her characters have to go through Hell to get there, she’s a-okay with that.

Alex writes and walks on the South Coast of England—even when her heart and spellcheck are in New York.

You can now find her dark m/m romance under Alexis Jane, if you like love…but darker.

I picked up this book with a little trepidation due to the rarity of good wolf novels. However, I found it to be a good read. The men breathe life into the book and so do their children.

This book is about a man who was shamed for liking other men by his older brother. Naturally, he thought one opinion from a relative must mean all thought this way on the matter. After seeing the man he loved join the Army and get married to a woman, Caleb rashly joined the Army as well to run away from his desires with no inclination of ever returning home again. He later settles in Nebraska in a house he built in a town that openly flirts with hatred for werewolves as they are conservative small town folk. Jacob, another werewolf, is brought to Caleb's homestead beaten and ripped apart. Caleb lets him stay until he's healed and finds himself attracted to the younger man. There's so much more to this story then that. The love of children is brought in and draws you deeper.

For those who are Christian, there is some prejudice mentioned only in the idea that we tend to be conservatives and if you want to get technical, the characters who are directly seen as Christians, are hypocrites or stupidly naïve with good intentions. It's only mentioned two or three times but it's hard to miss if you are one reading.

There's maybe one or two sex scenes, possibly three for those with teenagers or tweens wanting to read.

This series is not about coming out to anyone. It is about accepting yourself and trusting others. A good one at that. I would highly recommend this to anyone who want to read a well written novel with driven characters who make sense. A heads up, the kids will break your heart. Some areas are predictable but it's probably because I've read so much.

I just finished reading this wonderful story set in the Old West involving an Alpha werewolf named Caleb who has lived on his own for far too long.

When a wounded Alpha wolf is brought to him by a friend, what can he do but take care of him?

This was a great read, and because I won't give away spoilers, all I will say is if you like your Alpha wolf heroes a bit grump, and enjoy seeing someone find their family, then you really should read this book.

You won't regret it at all.

I have not finished this story yet but wanted to share that I just love it. Its different but yet using the characteristics I like in a m/m story. I love the two main characters and the setting is so real that I can easily picture it. I read alot of so called paranormal romance books and rarely am I as delighted as I am with this story. Well done, very well done!

So I finished this last night, or really early this morning since I couldn't put it down. I think I found my new most favorite book after decades of reading. Sweet story but not so sweet that my teeth hurt. I love love the conversation between Caleb and Jacob, it so reminds me of my own with the love of my life! I am already looking forward to the next chapter in their lives. My only dismay is that I cannot purchase a real book to sit on my bookcase to be there forever.

I was able to purchase the paperback copy of this book as soon as it came available! First paper copy of a book that I have bought since I got my Kindle. This is an outstanding story!

I liked the book. Good flow, good MCs. Not a lot of editing problems. I had a hard time with the complete alpha birth superiority. One of the MC's older brothers was beta, and he would be disinherited because of his birth. No one ever grew to think it was wrong. I would have hated my younger brother too! There was no redemption for anyone.

I think this author has a lot of talent. I liked the old time western romance mixed in with the werewolf stuff that all worked for me. I got confused if these two attracted male alpha's were "fated mates" or "mates by choice" or whatever. I don't think the author was forthcoming with that info for the reader either. So I guess at times you could say both the main characters actions and emotional responses were hard to understand as I am sure their responses were difficult to gauge for the other main character. As more and more characters became involved it became even worse and I became more detached as the reader even with so much going on.

Other than those issues which might have just been me and my own comfort level the story was well written and a good read.

Caleb walked away from his pack years ago. After fighting in the civil war, he has made his home in the the flat lands of Nebraska. He lives a solitary life, till one night the sheriff presents him the body of a young shifter. The young man is barely alive. Caleb tends to his recovery, but he doesn't need or want this complication in life.

Jacob left his pack in New York, to find the man that walked out of his life. He never thought he would wind up in the plains of Nebraska, fighting for his life after a brutal beating.

Wow, oh wow, did I love this book. The amazing cover got me interested, but the story sealed the deal. The pacing is just right. The characters are well developed, and the story, well now, you just got to read it. Kudos to the author for giving me a story I felt I was living.

I was privilaged to be able to read the original 1st chapter of this for some honest critique and suggestions. That was long ago, in just the very rough draft. Even then I found the historical setting, and the relunctant hero/heros, with an unusual shifter twist, to be very interesting. I could not stop turning pages! This is Alex Janes' 1st published work. When she told us that it was finished and headed out to be published I COULD NOT WAIT, to get my hands on the finished book. I love it! I am cheering for the the rest of the series to get wrtten ASAP!
A new way to look at shifter dynamics, love, heros, the old west, and some unusual twists all rolled into one.

I really enjoyed this book it had 2 of my reading loves (historical and paranormal). This book is about 2 alphas that come together to form a family after Jacob is seriously injured and the sheriff brings him to Caleb the only wolf in the town. Together they take in 2 children from the orphan train as well as revealing who beat Jacob to within an inch of his life as well as escaping an arsonist bent on destroying their family. It was a sweet story and I will read again as it just transported you into the book. Glad there's a second book carrying on with their story. Brilliant book.

Jacob and Caleb were nice characters and the HEA was satisfying. It was very slow for at least half of the book whilst 'feelings' were wrestled with, but in the last third everything happened. It could have been better paced, but it was still worth reading.

There were moments whilst reading this fantastic novel that I felt myself completely surrounded by the sights and sounds of Jacob and Caleb's world. I lost myself in their story, in their struggles and loves and moments of weakness and strength. I can't praise this enough, not without becoming a little verbally insane.

If you enjoy a story that completely grips you from the first word and won't let you go until the last, this is the one for you. Alex Jane has excelled herself and I can't even cope with waiting for the next instalments!
