Virginia Crow is an award-winning Scottish author who grew up in Orkney and now lives in Caithness. She comes from a large family of writers and readers, and has been surrounded by books her whole life. Her favourite genres to write are fantasy and historical fiction, sometimes mixing the two together. She enjoys swashbuckling stories, her favourite book being The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas and she is still waiting for a screen adaption that lives up to it! Her academic passions are theology and history, her undergraduate degree in the former and her postgraduate degree in the latter, and aspects of these frequently appear within her writings.
When not writing, Virginia is usually to be found teaching music. She believes wholeheartedly in the power of music, especially as a tool of inspiration, and music is often playing when she writes. Her life is governed by two spaniels, Orlando and Jess, and she enjoys exploring the Caithness countryside with these canine sidekicks.
She loves cheese, music, and films, but hates mushrooms.
As an only child, Karen Heenan learned early that boredom was the enemy. Shortly after she discovered perpetual motion, and has rarely been seen holding still since.
She lives in Lansdowne, PA, just outside Philadelphia, where she grows much of her own food and makes her own clothes. She is accompanied on her quest for self-sufficiency by a very patient husband and an ever-changing number of cats.
One constant: she is always writing her next book.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2023I am a Tudorphile from long ago. Because of that I quickly got lost in the English history in this fascinating book of "what ifs". The stories from authors other than those are pretty good, but give me "the Henrys", Elizabeth and Mary and I'm golden.
An FYI: These stories are *not* to be taken as true history. Each author got to speculate what might have happened if...
I loved it. Highly Recommended 5/5
- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2022With one streak of the quill another history unveiled. I thoroughly enjoyed these alternatives. Characters are kept within their respective flaws and strength in entirely different reality, such fun to compare.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2022A whole lot of fun in an anthology of short stories. The authors write with such imagination and absolutely know their subject matter. This was a great find and I highly recommend it!

4.0 out of 5 stars What if?
This ‘books’ title explains all. Each author has chosen a historical period where a crossroad in history ‘might’ have resulted in a very different outcome for the people, futures and choices of countries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulously Varied and Brilliantly Compiled
Eight historical writers were challenged to ask the greatest question of their genre: What If?
The results are varied in content but equally captivating. This book will take you back into the past, before projecting you forward to a time which might have existed if only one thing was changed. It's a study of how strange it is that one moment - one decision - can dictates the years which follow.
Once you've read this book, you will always be wondering what might have happened; how different the world would be. What then..? What if..?

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly Believable
These stories are so well written that I had to keep reminding myself they're fiction. A great exercise in 'What if?' and great entertainment

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was disappointed with this book; the stories were well-written and interesting, but very much "in a vacuum"; there was no speculation about how this change in our past might have affected our present. What would England be like without the Protestant reformation, for instance.... I found the stories simply didn't carry through.
