3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 123 ratings

Starting over at forty is hard work for landscape architect Jack Bowman. His long-term partner hurt him badly. With his self-esteem dented by the break up, trusting a new lover is going to take time.

Tyler Freeman is equally unlucky when it comes to love. Now that he’s over thirty-five, he’s tired of getting played. All he wants is someone special. How hard can it be to meet a man who’s honest, with no hidden surprises?

Being set up on a blind date might be a classic cliché, but it’s a stroke of good luck for Jack and Tyler. They have a lot in common, including previous relationships steeped in deceit, but it’s worth navigating their trust issues if it means laying those ghosts to rest.

Making it work finally seems possible—until an accidental discovery threatens their newfound happiness.

I enjoyed this book. Loved the fact the couple are older and not younger versions. I have two issues, and they are super small ones. Alternative POV's would have been great and gosh I wish the book was longer! I love the ending but just felt a wee bit rushed. Over all a great read about love lost and love found. Cover is great too.

    Refreshing. Romantic. Realistic. Touching. Poignant.

Always Another Side is extremely well written. This is a beautifully done true-life relationship-based story. Jack and Tyler are two mature men who have experienced heartbreak – Jack has recently broken up with his partner of many years after his significant other cheated on him and Tyler has never successfully been involved in a long-term relationship (not sure why not, because he’s a gem!). Jack isn’t sure he wants to jump into another relationship, but he agrees to have dinner with friends to meet Tyler. The two find they have a lot in common and enjoy one another’s company, so they give it a go and find themselves heading into a steadily evolving relationship. They both realize the importance of communication and honesty, but it seems they spend a great deal of time analyzing every little thing to avoid potential problems. Tyler also struggles with trying not to rush things. The conflict, vulnerability and raw emotion these two grapple with as they keep moving forward is a testament to their healing and growing process.

It’s easy to connect to these two: they’re average people who have real jobs, real families, real problems, and a real life, right down to the aches of pains of getting old. Jacobs delivers a truly satisfying and heartwarming read. I loved Jack and Tyler as individuals and as a couple, and they are definitely a couple you can see living their HEA together. This is a second chance romance not to be missed.

This was a pretty good read. Hoenestly, I just finished reading the story and have a hard time remembering most of it. I tend to have issue following stories that are written using slang from other countries. So, I really have nothing bad to say about the story. I just had a hard time following it.

Heartbreak, despair, loneliness. Two men emerging from love gone wrong. That they came together at this time in their lives and worked through some traumatic issues to finally find lasting love was Fate. At long last.

This is a feel good story that really makes you smile through most of the book. The blurb does a great job of letting the reader know what to expect and the story takes off with Tyler and Jack getting ready to meet up on a blind date with the help of their friends.

Jack’s facing new experiences, making new decisions, and having to start over at a place in his life he never saw coming. After a long-time partner leaves him behind, Jack continues to mope and feel sorry for himself forcing his best friend, Zena, to take measures into her own hands and set up a blind date.

Tyler’s experiences may be a little different but he’s also bristling from a breakup and his friends want to see him get back out there and stop hiding away.

They start off a little rocky, both out of practice flirting, each making corny and comical pickup lines but it starts to show a freshness and spontaneity between them that they haven’t felt in a long time. Trying hard to not get ahead of themselves and fall into old patterns they take things slow, lunch dates through the week, dinners on Sunday, and over the course of several weeks they really like each other.

It’s great to be laughing and enjoying themselves again. They’ve spent far too much time second guessing every decision and every move in the past and they decide to just go with it. Never being as honest and as open as they are now - starting out - they realize that while it may be a little uncomfortable, at first, at least they know where they stand with each other.

They both agree taking it slow is the best way, however, they are very attracted to one another. A slow burn can easily turn into a fully engulfed explosion and once they take the plunge they are both reminded they still have what it takes to turn a partner inside out. It’s a very heady feeling and one that helps lift the spirits of both men. Just when things are really starting to pick up speed, Tyler finds something that he can’t get past. And, as luck would have it, it will be worse for Jack. Will they get past this new information? Or will it be the end for Tyler once again?

I really enjoyed the author’s writing style and the way that I was pulled into the story in a short amount of time. Always Another Side is little over 100 pages with little to no angst and I thought the author really had the characters fleshed out nicely giving the reader a real look into each one. There are some great secondary characters, as well, that were not only funny but really helped to bring the story to its full potential. A very enjoyable read that I would recommend to others.

Beautiful, hot romance. I really liked both main characters. I was so glad that they didn't hold things in, but talked about things when they came up. Using "failure to communicate" as the conflict in romances is one of my pet peeves.

I loved these two guys together. Been the of them deserved happiness and worked very hard to get it. And holy twist I'm not sure I could move on from that one but so glad they did.

I managed to get about 3/4 of the way through before I got so tired of their going on and on about how old they are at 40 and that it was their fault someone else was a cheater that I simply gave up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really, really liked it!

I really enjoyed Always Another Side.
Annabelle Jacobs took a storyline that had been done before and made it hers.

I loved how open both Jack and Tyler were with each other. There was no beating around the bush and no miscommunication. Both have been in not so good relationships before, so because of that they were both very honest with each other and talked about things you might not usually talk about that soon after meeting someone. But considering what they both have been through I found it refreshing and so enjoyable!

Why should they spent time with each other, basically wasting time, when in the end they don’t fit? Better to figure this out early, before there’s too many expectations and feelings on the line.
I liked how this way they were both aware of what they were getting into and who they were doing it with. Not saying I don’t like slowburn too. But honestly like this can be refreshing. Totally depends on the mood you’re in.

Minor thing I didn’t like is that I saw the twist really early in the story. Maybe it was intentional, but I would have prefered that to not be so obvious until a bit later in the story.
I really liked though how the author (and the protagonists) handled that situation. It felt real and believable. I’ve (luckily) never been in that situation, but I honestly wouldn’t know what to do.
But again Jack and Tyler were honest with each other. And I think that’s probably why this worked so well for me. Otherwise I might have not enjoyed Always Another Side as much. But because there was no over the top drama, just real-life (because stuff like this happens), and because I trusted the author to not try to make it into something ridiculous I can honestly recommend this story.

I really enjoyed this second chance love story.
It was great to read about some more mature characters with Jack being 40 and Tyler 36.
Annabelle Jacob's writes such real characters. The doubts, insecurities, worries are all real emotions and they leap off the page.
I loved how Jack and Tyler were honest and open with each other from the very start. Both feeling too 'old' to be wasting time playing games and I really enjoyed that.

The twist was somewhat predictable but didn't dampen my enjoyment at all.

It's a really sweet story and I enjoyed every minute of it.

I really enjoy Annabelle Jacob's writing and I adore that she doesn't Americanise her books. She's English and her characters, settings and writing are undoubtedly English.

Good read. Nice story without being overly smutty. I find a lot of writing nowadays to be one long drawn out sex-fest with no real feeling or emotion. This was different, the characters were both very likable and Annabelle has written them to feel like proper rounded adults, both with their strong sense of moral fibre intact. As a gay man myself it is refreshing for someone to portray us as something other than one dimensional debauched sex addicts.
