- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2021Oh what a story!! At times heartfelt and healing and again murderous and apocalyptic. An Air Force officer is " chosen" to be a delivery boy of a weapon so powerful simply seeing it is enough to change everyday traditional thinking into a much deeper level of what each person actually wants. For example a rap singer focused just on HIS luxury and comfort suddenly wants to help the homeless or a man having a drink with his boss suddenly needs to confess to a subversion guaranteed to end his employment.
Thus is very well written to bring you along on a journey that no one knows how it will end.
In parts it reminded me of the Biblical Noah with him and his family being the only ones left alive while other times song lyrics of " there aint no good guys, there ain't no bad guys, just you and me and we just disagree " keep popping into my head.
And the ending... Did not see that coming ( should have). Its a wild ride and well worth the price of admission. Fantastic!!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2019I've been a huge fan of Robert Chazz Chute since I first read 'This Plague of Days', so I know how well he writes, but 'Amid Mortal Words' is something else again. Yes, it is philosophical, but it poses a question we all need to answer - if we had the power to kill some people in order to save a /lot/ of other people, possibly better people, would we? Should we?
If you've ever pondered that question then you'll enjoy this book.
If you've ever read horror or science fiction then you will enjoy this book even more.
You're welcome. :)
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2019Absolutely loved this book! The story had me hooked from the very beginning. Robert has a way of making you feel like you're there, silently riding along with characters. This story was exciting from beginning to end. So many twist and turns, edge of your seat moments, and just overall great story!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2019My wife has been a huge fan of Robert Chazz Chute's writing for some time, counting him among the best writers of his generation. She considers his opus "Plague of Days" among the top ten books she has ever read, which is saying something, since she has been a life-long avid reader with a library of thousands of books. Nevertheless, I have been reluctant to entertain fiction any longer, given the fact that the disturbing reality of our current world is already verging on some malignant combination of a criminal Idiocracy and a fascist Handmaiden's Tale, with national leaders straight out of One Flew Over of the Cuckoo's Nest. In any case, when she received Amid Mortal Words in the mail, I was strangely drawn to its premise, and finished the book in 2 days. I could simply not put it down, and I am filled with admiration for the author's accomplishment. What an amazing tale, what a great storyteller! Definitely movie-worthy -- some smart Hollywood type would be wise to pick it up for production. And speaking of wisdom, like the very best books in this genre, there is plenty of material here to really make you think -- some very profound elements amidst the action, and deft character developments too, delving knowingly into emotional depths uncommon in any genre. So impressive! I can't wait to read more of this exceptional talent, and feel grateful to have been taken along on a ride I will remember and ponder over for a long time.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2019The plot was extremely original and extremely satisfying. no sci-fi book in recent memory has turned good and bad, right and wrong, questions of the heart and society, into such a compelling read. Complex characters, realistic life scenarios, and questions about the deepest moral or immoral parts of your soul make this book unforgettable.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Demands Your Attention
I have never read a story quite like this before. Cosmic horror is how the author describes it. Apparently, I am too unrefined to recognize such fine genre distinctions. It is a kind of sci-fi, to my mind. The story is about how the main character, Zane, comes to find himself in possession of a book that has such power that any one passage seems to turn the reader into someone who now has an unvarnished look at the truth within and, more often than not, the ugliness of that truth leads to a punishing outcome. There is certainly an element of delight that the reader gets from seeing a truly bad person receive richly deserved justice. What really grabbed me, though, was the way that the story drives forward relentlessly, and that the outcomes of the encounters with this powerful book seem surprising every time. Told from Zane's perspective, he's not really sure what's going on either, so it's no wonder that I was surprised. I felt carried along with Zane in his own terrifying journey.
Robert Chazz Chute is a brilliant writer. He paints pictures in my mind that are utterly vivid. I felt like I was watching a movie as the events in the story unfolded. I encourage everyone to get a copy. Be prepared to be entertained, but also be prepared to think about the quality of one's moral life. Given the confrontation with one's own behaviour that each character experiences in the encounter with the book, one might argue that this novel could be called Amid Moral Words. Don't worry. It does not preach or moralize, but I was provoked to think about what qualifies as good and bad in this world. Amazing! All this action and yet one is given the opportunity to think, too! What a great story!
Note: I had the privilege of proof-reading or "beta-reading" a prepublication version of this novel. However, I received no remuneration other than the delight in reading Amid Mortal Words sooner than just about anybody but the author and the editor. Don't miss your own opportunity for delight.
