This book was written with such consummate skill. I have enormous admiration for Lucinda E Clarke as an author. She not only knows how to write an edge-of-the-seat, well-constructed story that would make a brilliant movie – she does it using beautiful, spare, intelligent, and amazingly descriptive language. By the time I got to the end of ‘Amie’ I felt as though I’d been to Africa – seen it, touched it, smelled it, heard it... loved it and hated it. Everything that is the truth of the country is there in this book. Can I give it six stars please? It deserves it. (Amie an African Adventure)
Amie: African Adventure has something for everyone!
Author Lucinda E. Clarke has done a fantastic job in creating characters that her readers will truly connect with, relate to and care about. Readers may look up from the story and find themselves surprised to be in their familiar environments instead of on a hot and dusty road in Africa.
When I started reading this today, I had no idea it was going to consume my every free moment. I finished it today. Amie was so relatable, so real, so brave, so beautiful a soul. I simply had to know what happened to her before bed. Imagine starting your life with your new husband with all the average dreams and then finding out he has a job offer in Africa. Exciting. Terrifying. Life altering. So much more. I was immersed in the culture, seeing it perfectly through Amie. This was really stunning deep point of view immersive writing. I became one with Amie.
This is a fabulous story. It has so many elements that all blend together so well. It tells the tale of Amie, a British woman who goes to live in an African country with her husband, on what is supposed to be a short-term contract. She discovers a community of sorts there and sees how white immigrants live and are generally expected to behave. But disaster strikes when civil war breaks out.
I won't spoil the story for you - this is one you will have to read for yourself, and you won't be disappointed. The story seems to start slowly, and then all of a sudden it takes off, and the pages are practically turning themselves. The writing is excellent. Very engaging, and Amie is not only realistic, but very much a person you can relate to, and see her grow. I enjoyed this thriller immensely. Highly recommended.
I loved this book! It's the best story I've read in a very long time. I love a story that makes me feel like I'm living with the characters. I could feel Amie's anxiety about moving to Africa, her adjustment to her new life, her sympathy, fear, frustration and love of Africa and it's people. Just as Amie's life was starting to get into a routine (and the book too), the story shifted and I had to read late into the night to find out what happen next. The story telling is definitely worth 5 stars and I'm looking forward to reading the sequel (and that almost never happens).
