- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2023This book blew my mind. The writing is so precise. The magic system is amazing and delightful and new. The characters have depth and poignancy. I can’t wait to read everything else in the series (and the many books in the rest of the universe). Instant favorite.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2020This moderately short story provides a powerful introduction to the The Five. The story is packed with action and character development. The world view develops along with the story.
The protagonists are troubled and interesting. You grow invested in their future and their attempts to find out who they are and to gain their freedom.
I look forward to the rest of the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2023Great characters & a great story. Compact story line. Characters seemed real, and that is a great draw. Good stuff!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2020Interesting characters and storyline. It moves pretty fast and the dialog makes it fun. Yes, lots of violence and some sexual situations, but just the right balance to make the storyline (The Amplifier Series) work.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2020This is a pretty big departure from my much happier, snarkier characters from the Dowser universe. As a set up, I hope we get somewhere... else when the series begins "for real."
We start this journey (which includes book 0 and short story 0.5) with a bunch of no-name, genetically engineered adepts who are essentially different strike teams. While the teams are made up of some "regular" adepts, there is a group of "special" ones that are generally just weapons. Things go bad (as they often do) and the order of things gets... blown up. Pretty literally.
I found it kind of hard to identify with any of the characters in the first story (book 0). While book 0.5 gave them a little more humanity, I think I'm going to take a breather between this and book 1. Book 0.5 had a bit more of a murder mystery feel. There's adepts plus the super duper ones and they are forced to navigate the mundane world where I'm slightly more comfortable. I liked the end result, but I really did not like Emma. We'll see where she heads in future installments, because I am absolutely allergic to quitting a series.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2019Great way to introduce a new series! We get a background story and a current one in one book! Plus a taste of the next story due April 30, 2019. I highly recommend Meghan Ciana Doidge as a great storyteller. This new series has great promise.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2019I have enjoyed the entire Dowser Universe, and the individual stories about the characters in the universe. This is the story of one such character, and I have to say getting their whole story makes the character more relate able and complete. This was a perfect intro novellete to the upcoming full length novel about our amplifier, it explains so well where the characters came from and how they became who they are. If you like the dowser series you will love the amplifier books. And of course I do!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2022I'm surprised by how much I loved this story. I read one other book by this author and really didn't like it. I didn't have high hopes for this second try of same author. But I ended up loving this story. I loved how strong the fmc is. I love the relationship btn the fmc and Christopher. I love the relationship of the five and their experiences in an intense battls. And the way we could easily measure the growth of the fmc via a time passed plot device. Loved. Definitely won't hesitate to read this author again.
