'The best way I can describe this book is as a delicious, well-written escape. The author does an amazing job of adding layers of mystery and interconnectedness-you don't know you're getting to know complex secondary characters, she just kind of crafts something dynamic and engaging that gets under your skin.' - Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt is a beautiful story of mystery as well as love during a time of war. The encounter of Charlotte and Nate.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNate was feeling lost and considering suicide when his horse was startled by Lottie and dumped him on the ground. Lottie was running away from home and did not want to be noticed. His injured leg was keeping him from being able to get up so Lottie helped him get up . Little did either of them know that their lives would be forever altered by this event. The story is interesting and well written but there are a few misused words and phrases. Overall a very good book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBut the basic tenor of the period is maintained. Could have been a bit condensed--some overly repeated scenarios. Lotte's strength and independence seem surprising after having spent her first 24 years obedient to her father's will. Nate is a stalwart, admirable hero, although he seems somewhat acquiescent to both Lotte and the Duke when his own instincts seem the better path. All passions are restrained and deferred to another day or place.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis reminded me of the old silent movies where the intrepid heroine lurches from one improbable escape to the next. Mousy little Lottie Benham has been kept sheltered almost all her life by her father who uses her as an unpaid secretary. After his death, her reprehensible cousin inherits the estate and is enraged to find out that the fortune has been left to her. She overhears his dastardly plan for her and runs away...into the path of a horse ridden by a wounded ex-soldier. Together, the two of them have wild (and somewhat silly) adventures that were engineered by a supercilious Duke. Of course, the meek little mouse turns into a lion, wielding pokers and daggers and helps to save the day. Yeah, I read it and enjoyed most of it, but won't be reading any more of the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2022Format: KindleVerified Purchase4 1/2 stars. All of the characters were interesting, and they were more than what they seemed to be initially. The plot was a roller coaster ride with its twists and turns. Nate and Lottie were well matched, but they both were so reluctant to admit their feelings that they had constant misunderstandings. It was satisfying when they managed to get married and begin a life together. Occasionally, I thought the book was dragging a bit, but looking back, I appreciate the detail. I’ll look forward to reading more stories from this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt’s a good story and true to the Regency period, except for a lot of 21st century attitudes. I hope that’s because the author thinks it’s necessary to pander to her readers, not through automatic contemporary usage, because the rest of her book is accurate.
Specific examples:
“If you have any respect for me, you will not try to persuade me otherwise.” Verbalizing the concept of respecting a female just doesn’t sound like something Jane Austen or Georgette Heyer would say.
The hero “at last understood how it was for a female being assessed for her looks.” In the period, *everyone* assessed women for their looks – that, their status and their money were the basis of marriage. A more accurate statement might be, “He felt like a horse at Tattersalls, being assessed for his looks.”
“It would have meant revealing their identify.” The singular “they” was in use during the Regency period – Jane Austen used it to mean “people in general” – but this is referring to a specific person.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchasePenny Hampson has given us a delightful read with her “An Officer’s Vow.” It has well-drawn characters one roots for and villains you are dying to see upended. There’s adventure, betrayal, unexpected turns, danger and triumph. At the center of the story are two strong-wiled, well-matched lovers who keep getting in their own way. The author’s writing provides a balanced mix of narrative, action and engaging dialogue and her attention to historical detail is admirable and presented with a deft hand. I very much enjoyed this book set in the Regency period and recommend it to lovers of this genre.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI enjoyed the fact that this was an actual romance and didn't have any sex scenes in it. I also liked the excitement of the French spies causing trouble for the couple. It was wonderful to see a book with a woman who became stronger and more her own person as the story went on. I liked the fact that the male lead learned to let her make her own decisions and take charge at times.

5.0 out of 5 stars An adventure story mingled with danger & romance
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA bit different to the normal stories of this era. It had adventure, romance, danger & a plot of French spies. The ladies in it were all spirited & all played a good part. Well worth a read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Regency Drama with a Plucky Heroine
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLottie flees her obnoxious cousin. Nate Crawford is on his way home after being wounded in battle. Lottie is on the run, from an unwanted suitor. Nate believes that his life is at an end because of his crippling injury. They meet – and their tale begins.
In this regency drama, Ms Hampson pulls all stops and throws in Lottie’s friend Harriet Spencer, French spies, a duke, his friend and secretary, the leader of a bawdy house, as well as various people serving the main characters as maids, innkeepers etc.
An Officer’s Vow throws a different light on the regency period than the books by Jane Austen that concentrate on character development. Here the reader will find tumult and erotic entanglements, all presented in pleasant prose that is easily read. All in all, this escapist confection that is ripe with romance and imbroglios will delight lovers of Regency romance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sooo good
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe story and the characters were interesting and intriguing and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Glad the manipulative people in Lottie’s life didn’t ruin the happy ending she deserved.

2.0 out of 5 stars Two and a Half Stars
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI was quite enjoying this regency romance up until 70% through the book, when the author goes off the rails with Lottie’s character. The h is supposed to be a sheltered, sequestered innocent, yet not only can she knee a man sufficiently to escape his presence but can also land a good enough punch to give another one a bloody nose. Things only get more preposterous as she forcefully asserts herself with the H so she can act as a spy for King and country. I agree with another reviewer that the book should have ended after the resolution of her kidnapping.
