An Old Acquaintance: A Modern Pride and Prejudice Novella Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 204 ratings

“In those moments, it almost felt as if time stood still, and he allowed himself to imagine a world where they could go back and pick up where they left off.”

Elizabeth Bennet and Will Darcy first cross paths at a holiday fraternity party, where a less-than-ideal meeting sets the stage for a tale of love, loss, and second chances that spans two decades.

Will, an aspiring musician with a voice that could warm even the coldest winter night, embarks on a journey to turn his dream of a singing career into a reality.

Elizabeth, a determined young woman with career aspirations of her own, chooses to stay close to her roots and remain in the small college town that she loves.

Time and distance place unexpected strains on their love, leading to a painful decision to part ways. But years later, when fate reunites them, the embers of their flame flicker to life once more.

Will the magic of Christmas be enough to bring them back together?

Join Will and Elizabeth on a holiday journey of love and resilience in this contemporary reimagining of a classic tale.

"I could not help but feel consumed by these characters and their story. I felt swoony and blissful, I felt agony and heartache. I cried...multiple times. I love when I feel this strong connection with characters. Poignant, stirring, and sincere - An Old Acquaintance is an exceptional holiday novella where soul-piercing love is hard won." 5 stars - Austenesque Reviews

Cat Andrews has always been an avid reader, but didn’t discover Jane Austen until her love of a certain British actor led her to the BBC’s 1995 production of Pride and Prejudice, because she just had to know—why all the fuss over this Darcy guy? What followed her viewing of that glorious miniseries was an inhalation of and immediate fixation on all of Austen’s novels, though Pride and Prejudice remains her favorite (and that certain British actor will always be, to her, the quintessential Darcy).

Her discovery of Jane Austen Fan Fiction opened up a whole new world, and thus began her addiction, and months and months of sleep deprivation, as she immersed herself in JAFF. After reading a modern Pride and Prejudice variation that she fell in love with, she was inspired to begin a cautious but earnest foray into the world of writing.

In real life, Cat has spent thirty-plus years working in healthcare. She is a confirmed thalassophile and enjoys life on the shores of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where she grew up, fell in love with her own Mr. Darcy, and raised a family. More often than not, you can find her at the beach with a book in her hand and her toes in the sand.

Perfect for any pride and prejudice fan around the holidays. I always love seeing their story get a modern twist.

Darcy and Elizabeth fall in love in college but can their relationship survive his growing music career and her steady business career. Ups and downs and lots of emotional turmoil. I can't say it was angst but you definitely have a lot of heartache and sorrow. I like how it wrapped it. I call it a holiday variation because it focuses on Christmas of various years and the events that occur.

He always manages to make a poor impression when meeting Elizabeth. I found this book sweet and engaging. The idea of a singer Darcy is well portrayed and the story flows well without looking the attention of the reader. A job well done.

This is a well-written stand alone romantic story of second chances. When circumstances constrained two intense lovers to go about their own paths, heartache follows. But eventually they realize that living their lives apart and separate is the surest way to a miserable existence. When a second opportunity arises for their happily ever after, they grab it with gratitude and true contentment and fulfillment.

It is tricky though how the author claims this as a modern Pride and Prejudice. Save for their initial meeting, there isn’t much pride and prejudice in the story. It’s a plain modern love story packaged as a modern variation, which this reader does not agree.

It is unthinkable for Elizabeth Bennet to marry against her desire for true love. She could’ve waited for Will Darcy or sulked for decades. But based on the Elizabeth Bennet of Canon, she would not have succumbed to the push for marriage just to “settle”. While in this modern take, Elizabeth acted like the Charlotte Lucas of Canon: sensible, practical and testing herself to settle for security and safety rather than what her heart desires. In the end, she hurt people along the way. That is not the Elizabeth Bennet of P&P. If anyone was to get married, Will Darcy would have been the most likely candidate. This realization is what caused the 2star deduction.

I was happy to see another story from an author I’ve been reading for a decade (maybe more?) I loved that the story was told over Christmas’s. The story felt very natural and it was easy to relate to how the different characters were feeling. I look forward to more books from Cat Andrew’s.

And the inspiration must have come from Dan Fogelberg's, "Auld Lang Syne". Beautiful, and thank you for the tribute to my favourite artist of all time.

In this modern (starting in the 80’s) you pop into the lives of Elizabeth and Darcy at Christmas time and see what has happened since the previous Christmas. They journey from college to adulthood with ups and downs for each. Parts are tough on both of them but thankfully they find their way back to each other. Will I read this again….. more than likely especially if I am in the mood for a Christmas themed modern story.

Really enjoyed this novella. It shows mostly short snapshots of Will & Lizzy’s relationship over the years, but you still get a great sense of their love and what draws them to each other (and, occasionally, apart).

4.0 out of 5 stars A poignant modern novella

So hard to say good-bye when all you want to do is stay.

“His heart was full of her, full of them, and as he ran his hands through the waves of her hair, he realized now, more than ever, that they would belong to each other forever.” (quote from the book)

There are certain authors that I trust with a modern version of our beloved characters from Pride & Prejudice. Cat Andrews is one of them. In this Christmas novella, she takes us on a believable journey of an Elizabeth Bennet and Will Darcy romance that is very poignant and emotional, at least for me. I was brought to tears many times. I think I cried more than smiled.

“The pain was visceral; she felt as though her heart, her very soul, was shredding, ripping apart, but she knew she was doing the right thing. A clean break was necessary…” (quote from the book)

But what happens when careers get in the way? What happens if one person is making all the sacrifices? As this is a novella, I don’t want to give much away. I loved the location of this story, Woodstock, Vermont and Burlington, Vermont. Burlington, in particular, holds a special place in my heart as I lived there for several years. I have happy and sad memories of my time there, and I feel that played a large part in my feelings with this book.

I definitely needed the box of tissues for this one. After a slight initial problem Will and Lizzy get together. ❤️❤️ They do have problems however due to different career choices but their devoted love for each other never dies. I loved their journey to happy ever after ( oh come on, you know this isn’t a spoiler!) I’m not saying any more only that this was a perfect, festive, romantic story and I absolutely loved it ❤️❤️❤️

3.0 out of 5 stars Seriously depressing, but very good writing
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 20, 2023
Most depressing Christmas themed book I've ever read. The first half of the book you're waiting for the break up, and then they don't get back together until about 87% in, and the same problems still seem to exist for them. Very good writing, but really a sad read.
