An Uncommon Sense (Sensual Healing Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 258 ratings

All six senses tell him she’s the one.

Down-to-earth teacher Grace Fox doesn’t believe in anything that can’t be proven by science. So she has no trouble dismissing her best friend’s prediction that she’ll have swear-out-loud sex with the next guy to walk through the door at the school’s parents’ evening.

Enter Ash Rutherford, a famous doctor-turned-medium and Viking lookalike. He’s there to discuss his troubled daughter, Jodie, but one mistaken flash of Grace’s sexy underwear sparks an instant attraction they both struggle to contain.

Grace is happy to help tutor Jodie, but she does her best to resist Ash’s charms, while he’s equally reluctant to fall for another skeptic. When she attends one of his shows, Ash provides more than enough proof of his talents to convince her he’s not faking it. But can she bring herself to trust him?

Warning: contains a real, live Viking, sex on a 1970s sheepskin rug, and a touch of the Twilight Zone.

From the Inside Flap

She gave a little shake of her head. "You're flirting with me."

"Am I?"

"Men don't flirt with me."

"I can't believe that."

"I scare them off."

He laughed. "Now that I can believe."

"Don't I scare you?"

He stepped a little closer to her. "Not in the least."

She looked up into his dark blue eyes. Her skin prickled with his nearness. She desperately wanted to kiss him. But she knew she couldn't. It wouldn't end well. She couldn't bear to see the disappointment in his eyes.

"Don't," she whispered. "I'm not your type of girl."

"Oh? And how do you know what type of girl I like?"

She moistened her lips with her tongue, not missing the way he watched her. "I know. I'm sure you like confident women, who've read the Kama Sutra from cover to cover and know massage techniques and own special equipment."

"You mean like power tools?"

"Don't make me laugh. I'm trying to be serious. I meant..." How on earth had she gotten herself into this conversation? She'd only just met the man, for crying out loud. "I mean, I'm sure the women you date are sexy and very good in bed and I'm...not."

His eyebrows rose. "What makes you say that?"

"I...I've been told." Her cheeks grew hot again.

He stared at her. A frown marred his forehead, and something like anger shone in his eyes. Then, gradually, his smile reappeared. "Maybe you just need more practice."

"I'm a schoolteacher who dresses like she's stepped out of the Victorian period. How good in bed do you really think I am?"

His smile widened. "Dresses on the outside."

He was talking about her stockings again. She moistened her lips once more. "Silky underwear doesn't make a woman sexy."

He gave a small laugh. "Oh, I beg to differ." He gave her a curious, amused glance. "You are an exceptionally sexy woman, Miss Fox. And I am sure that, given the right location, the right encouragement and the right man, you would be exceedingly good in bed."

This was such a sexy and sweet story! As a practicing professional medium/psychic I was impressed also at how accurate the descriptions of mediumship was and how realistically portrayed the disbelief and treatment of mediums can be. I got a kick out of Ash and Grace's banter and open and honest attraction to each other!!! I loved the humor of how they met and her first reactions to him... I was laughing out loud and knew then and there that I was going to enjoy the story and I did immensely!!!! Serenity somehow made this book so sweet, so cute, but very sexy and uniquely interesting at the same time. I highly recommend this story... It is a winner! 😊

Ash and Grace were total opposites. He was a median and she was a school teacher who believed science explained everything. She just couldn't comprehend what Ash did and was unable to believe Ash talked to the dead, especially her father. How they came together was well written and in the end I was a believer also. Great story. Always keep your mind open to different opinions.

An Uncommon Sense has one of the most refreshing heroines I've read in a long time. On the outside Grace Fox is a prim school mistress in buttoned up cotton, but on the inside she's wearing a black lace teddy and more ready than anyone suspects to have swear-out-loud sex with the right guy. Grace also says whatever she thinks. Literally. She has no filter. For me, this would be very bad, but since Grace has such a big heart and sweet spirit, her inevitable cringe-worthy offenses never last long and make her wonderfully endearing.

She is a skeptic in a relationship with a medium who looks like a Viking god. They both have acceptance issues, but the real challenge is winning over Ash's teenage daughter. This is such a heartfelt story with unexpected twists and laugh-out-loud humor. The writing is polished and sharply witty. Give it a try. You won't be sorry.

Ash is a fabulous looking Viking a) rugby player b) doctor c) medium. Right off the bat, he is a bit over the top. He's a terrific father and loves to cook. It appears his only flaw was that he wasn't ready to say he loved Grace within five weeks of meeting her. In fact Ash is so fantastic, that one wonders why he ends up with Grace.

Grace comes with a lot of baggage and seems to be on her way to becoming the crazy "cat" lady. She has only ever had bizarre boyfriends; psychopath, cross-dresser and the one who ran off to join the circus. Hmmmm... not sure I blame the circus guy. Although there is no evidence she suffers from Tourette's Syndrome or is autistic, she frequently blurts out whatever she thinks to the point of major rudeness. It is certainly not endearing.

Grace has an unhappy relationship with her domineering mother and feels abandoned by the men in her family. Luckily, she has a penchant for sexy underwear and manages to accidentally expose it on more than one occasion. I'm not sure how these two would ever have ended up together, otherwise.

The relationship is made more awkward because in addition to teaching Ash's daughter, Jodi, and tutoring her on the weekends, she is also the teacher most responsible for parent contact. Given that the story begins with concerns about Jodi's behavior, it is inexcusable that when more concerns arise, Grace not only doesn't contact Ash, she doesn't call back when he phones the school three times in one week. She believes phoning will make the relationship "real" and seems to have forgotten all her responsibilities as the teacher of a troubled teen.

Jodi reveals a huge secret she has been hiding for years. This seems odd given her close relationship with her loving father, especially since he was in the best position to help her.

The ending is unnecessarily rushed when the two main characters make huge turnarounds. Grace doesn't even want to have sex in Ash's bed for the first few weeks because it would mean the relationship was too serious. By week five (with one or two encounters per week) she is talking about love.

Grace's refusal to conceded that Ash's abilities are real when he gives her information no one but her dead father could know is unfair to Ash. Even at the end, the best she can do is admit that Ash is sincere about what he does.

Grace is a science teacher. Ash is the father of one of her students. Jodi was having trouble with her grades Ash asks Grace to tutor her. Ash is a Doctor that has given up his practice to become a medium. Grace is attracted to Ash but doesn't believe in after life. They have a lot to work out before they can get together.

As always Serenity Woods tells a great story. Some laughter, some tears, and a lot of love.

I chose this book less for the romance, (which is quite good and steamy), but more for seeing how the story develops when one of the main characters is a medium and converses with the dead. The story flowed really well and I was surprised and moved by it. I had tears at one point but don't want to say where or spoil anything for anyone. Read it, its wonderful.

    4.5 stars.

I absolutely adored this book. My only reason for not giving it 5 stars is that I found some of the things Grace said a little off the charts, regardless of that lack of filter between her brain and mouth. Other than that, Ash is a darling, and the story was great. I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The sceptic and the medium

Wow. That book was really different. Once again Serenity Woods does not disappoint with this first in the Sensual healing trio of books. I’m not sure if it made a believer out of me or not. Well thought out and insightful, totally believable and a great story. The sceptic and the medium. A great read. I hope the rest of the Sensual Healing books are about Gracie’s two friends. Can’t wait to see who (and what) they end up with.

5.0 out of 5 stars As A Medium I Highly Recommend This Book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 26, 2017
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an open mind. This book I feel gives a really good view of what life and relationships can be like when you are a medium. It's not easy when you meet someone and they don't believe you can speak to the dead.. I really felt for Ash and his daughter. Now from a medium's perspective, I also think that this book explains the process in a really good way, it doesn't make it out to be more than it is and it explains without going in to too many details. It explains in a very understandable way how some mediums receive their messages.. so yes I highly recommend this book. (I am a medium in case you hadn't guessed)
There are quite a few sex scenes but no more than what you'd read in a lot of modern romances these days.. the F word is used a bit but it is done in a way to not be over offensive in my opinion.
So want to know what it's like to be a real living medium? To see that they are just normal everyday people? then this book is definitely for you. I just wish I could give higher than a 5star rating. Well done Serenity Woods x

I loved this book. Strangely, I've sort of believed all my life. But Grace's scepticism made me wonder whether I really believed or not? You need to read it yourself to come to your own conclusions. I did! Thanks Ash.

This was a great book, one of the best. I love the twist of the guy being the medium this time as it always seems to be the female. The story was great, and a real page Turner. Had a hard time to put it down.

An unusual story in that Ash is a clairvoyant (who used to be a doctor) and Grace is a science teacher and closet writer of erotic novels (who doesn't believe in anything that cannot be proven). Not a match made in heaven and yet there is hot chemistry between them. Enjoyable read.
Note: lots of sex and strong language.
