The Art of Living (Matters of the Heart Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 161 ratings

Robert Harper has spent the past seventeen years living for his son. He doesn’t know who he is if he’s not being a caregiver and protector all rolled into one.

Niall Ross is finally ready to make a life of his own. After years spent making sure his younger brother had everything he needed, it’s time for Niall to discover who he is.

All it takes is one glance across a crowded meeting room for the men to feel a connection, but Robert is terrified his life is too complicated for the other man. Luckily, Niall has patience in abundance. With a little help from Robert’s meddling family, the two begin a tentative relationship.

Just as they’re finding their footing, all of Robert’s worst fears come to life and he falters under the pressure. Niall takes the challenge to show Robert that he’s a safe place to lean on, but when his own life begins to unravel, he places his heart in Robert’s hands. When two independent men are forced to trust each other will the love win out, or will vulnerability and fear cause them to lose the best thing they didn't even know they had.

All I can really say I knew Robert was going to be an amazing dad from Garret and Presleys story (the gift of believing) but I don't think I wad prepared for this amazing man and what he's willing to do for his son. Enter Niall Ross, the man who was made to stabilize him, make him see that their is a life outside of Garrett, not to take away but to get a breath. Niall proves his devotion time and time again to show he's in it for the long haul, even when Robert falters (with good reasons) he shows they both are loved and he will be around for as long as Garret and Robert will have him. It's just a beautiful story that you just don't expect this amount of emotion in an under 200-page book, yet here we are. Job well done.

    so good...
  • Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2023
This review is for the entire series.

First, you will probably never read any kind of novel that even closely resembles the first in the series--The Gift of Believing. That's because you will never come across two teenage characters as unique and beautifully developed as Presley and Garrett.

Second, do read the blurb for each book. None of them can be considered to be stand alones. Each book revolves around Garrett and Presley's relationship and the two most important men in their lives.

They are Garrett's father Robert in The Art of Living and Robert's long time best friend Jared in The Freedom of Loving. The only other characters that matter are Niall and Sam, who are deeply involved with both the YA duo and Robert and Jared respectively.

Third, get ready for several important sections of each book appearing identically in the others, a brilliant maneuver which allows you to follow timelines and relationships easily.

Finally, get ready for three completely blockbuster Epilogues, which when you're finished with the last book will move you to shed tears--of joy, rather than stress or anxiety.

    Extraordinary, plain and simple.

This was a pretty good book. The main characters had depth and the side characters were actual characters. The only problem I had was that it ended rather abruptly. I feel it needed a few more chapters. I still would recommend this book.

I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.

This is such a sweet story. It pulled me into their story from the beginning and I just couldn't help but root for their HEA.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

What an incredibly beautiful story. It has been six months since the end of The Gift of Believing. It was wonderful to see how Garrett and Presley's relationship has evolved. Now it's time for Garrett's dad to get his HEA. Robert has lived his life for his ill son for seventeen years. When the new boss Niall shows up, both Robert and Niall develop crushes on each other. With the help of Garrett and Presley, as well as Robert's friends Sam and Jared (really hope they get a book because I need their story!) Robert and Niall turn their crushes into reality. There are a few ups and downs as their relationship is put to the test, but it was so worth it. This book is filled with tons of heart, humor, and a little angst. Loved it!

3.5 stars. I actually enjoyed Garrett and Presley’s book more and I’m glad they are in this book as well. They also seem more mature than the adults in this book. I can’t say I like Robert very much (he rubs me the wrong way) and don’t know why Niall puts up with him but all’s well that ends well.

That ending was… perfect. I swear Abrianna loves pulling every emotion possible from her reads while reading her words. They have a way with words that goes above and beyond. I love that we got Robert’s story after being introduced to him in book one, The Gift of Believing. I couldn’t help falling harder for him and all of these characters. I can’t wait for Jared and Sam’s book next. 🖤😍🔥😍🖤

This book is all about family vs found family, and how much better you can be with the support of those who love you. It's two characters, one of whom has spent his entire adult life being there for his son, who is amazing but has lifelong health problems, and the other who spent his childhood trying to be everything for his brother, but hasn't been able to forgive him for tracking down the father who abandoned them.
It's really lovely and their family try so hard to get them together, it's just delightful

This is a beautifully touching story, two men, one had a terrible childhood and has now grown into adulthood and making a good life for himself. The other has had a rough life once an adult, he struggles with and fears over his seriously ill son. And then, if course, we have the gaggle of friends who plot and plan to draw these two men together. It's a wonderful story, with it's sweet moments and it's sad ones as well.

We met Robert in The Gift of Believing (Garrett and Presley's story, go grab it now) and he has put his personal life on hold for Garrett, he doesn't trust easily. Niall is new at work and has his own family issues but they are clearly attracted to one another.

These two are so sweet together and they don't stand a chance with everyone fighting for them to work out! I love this little extended family and I have my fingers crossed for a happy ending for some of the others and their complicated lives too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Trusting instead of fleeing in fear
Reviewed in Canada on December 28, 2022
Robert has taken care of Garrett on his own for so long, he thinks no one else will stick around with all that involves.

But, Niall has looked after his younger brother after their parents abandoned them, physically or emotionally, so he understands how hard it can be.

With lots of support from Garrett, Presley, Jared and Sam, the two start to date, and when they each fall apart and need the other, no one cuts and runs.

This novella shows the fear of trusting Robert has, and the perseverance to make things work Niall has. Together, they make a family and a life that neither expected, but both need and want.

    Great book.
